However, the conventional MSVQ is suboptimal with respect to the overall performance measure. This paper proposes a new technology to design the decoder codebook, which is different from the encoder codebook to optimise the overall performance. The performance improvement is achieved with no effect on encoding complexity, both storage and time consuming, but a modest increase in storage complexity of decoder.展开更多

An information theory approach is applied to the SAR imaging system, and the information content about a target that can be extracted from its radar image is evaluated by the average mutual information measure. A conditional (transition) probability density function (PDF) of the SAR imaging system is derived by analyzing the system and a closed form of the information content is found. It is shown that the information content obtained by the SAR imaging system from an independent sample of echoes will decrease and the total information content obtained by the SAR imaging system will increase with an increase in the number of looks. Because the total average mutual information is also used to define a measure of radiometric resolution for radar images, it is shown that the radiometric resolution of a radar image of terrain will be improved by spatial averaging. In addition, the imaging process and the data compression process for SAR are each treated as an independent generalized communication channel. The effects of data compression upon radiometric resolution for SAR are studied and some conclusions are obtained.展开更多

In order to overcome the drawback, this paper studies the mapping between the average signal magnitude (ASM) and the standard deviation of the input signal (SDIS) to the A/D from the original reference. Then, it points out the mistake of the mapping and introduces the concept of the standard deviation of the output signal (SDOS) from the A/D. After that, this paper educes the mapping between the ASM and SDOS from the A/D. Monte-Carlo experiment shows that none of the above two mappings is the optimal in the whole set of SD. Thus, this paper proposes the concept of piecewise linear mapping and the searching algorithm in the whole set of SD. According to the linear part, this paper gives the certification and analytical value of k and for nonlinear part, and utilizes the searching algorithm mentioned above to search the corresponding value of k. Experimental results based on simulated data and real data show that the performance of new algorithm is better than conventional BAQ when raw data is in heavy SD.展开更多
