The Application of Systemic-Functional Linguistics in Discourse Analysis

Systemic-functional linguistics considers function and semantics as the basis of human language and communicative activity. In recent years, Systemic-functional linguistics has been applied in such areas as natural language processing, early language learning, language education, stylistics, foreign language teaching, translation and stylistics. It sheds new light on the further application of this linguistic theory in other fields.

Systemic-Functional Linguistics and Foreign Language Teaching

Systemic-functional linguistics is one of the most influential linguistics schools in the recent 20 years.Though M.A.K.Halliday,the founder of Systemic-functional Linguistics,has not taken up any language teaching research by himself,he has been putting great emphasis on language teaching and language learning.With the increasing influence of Systemic-functional Linguistics,more and more applied linguists and foreign language teachers are trying to use his theories to solve the problems in language teaching and learning,and have achieved a lot.

Critical Discourse Analysis Based on Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics: Taking The Economist’s First Commentation on the End of China’s Zero-COVID Policy as an Example

Based on Halliday’s systemic functional grammar,especially the ideational function,this research aims at disclosing the hidden ideologies and values of the seemingly objective news reports on China’s COVID-19 policies in The Economist.Transitivity,voice,and nominalization are the major analytical subjects.After China lifted the zero-COVID policy,western media began criticizing China’s lack of data sharing,with some misinformation and misleading reports.The denouncement of inertness and reluctance to fight against the pandemic disclaim the Chinese government’s efforts and depreciate China’s image.China is portrayed as the villain and destroyer of people’s health worldwide.Meanwhile,they also hold a hesitant attitude toward China’s diplomacy.The re-engaging with foreign countries and travel restrictions have been described as imprudent and rushed actions.They also consider China as the fuse of contradiction in the United Nations.What is overt is their view of breaking up China.

A Systemic Functional Linguistics Approach to Knowledge Structure in Educational Discourse

This paper makes a literature review of Bernstein＇s knowledge structure theory and its influence on systemic functional linguistics. Then it explores systemic functional linguists＇ research on knowledge building and discusses Martin＇s theory of field as a powerful tool to analyze the knowledge structure in educational discourse.

The Discourse Analysis of Ecology from the Perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics

In recent decades, ecological problems are becoming more and more serious, which are focused worldwide. ＂Eco-[inguistics＂ （EL） also called ＂Ecology of Language＂ emerges in the situation that scholars try their best to solve the problems in linguistics. As an emerging interdisciplinary area of ecology and linguistics, eco-linguistics aims at analyzing the ecological phenomenon in language, exploring the relation between language and environment, and looking for the variety of internal patterns of language. At present, scholars at home have made a lot of achievements with the tendency from theoretical studies to practical studies. On the theoretical framework of eco-linguistics and the transitivity method of Systemic Functional Linguistics（SFL）, by analyzing two texts excerpted from BBC news reports which involve two kinds of animals, this article tries to explore the relation between human and animals and our attitudes toward different animals, analyze the ecological elements and hidden non-ecological features in the discourses, reveal the essential reasons for ecological disruption---inherent human ideology, interpret the influences on nature. We expect that people pay more attention to the issues of environment protection, change anthropocentrism to ecocentrism which builds the harmonious relation between human and nature.

The Analysis of Critical Discourse From the Perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics

Critical discourse analysis, with its roots in the critical linguistics of East Anglia, is closely connected with systemic func- tional linguistics. This paper focuses on the relationship between systemic functional linguistics and critical discourse analysis, and illus-trates the future trend and significance of research on critical discourse analysis. A Functional Analysis on the Translations Of Deng Guanquelou

Systemic functional linguistics is correlated with the translation study for the theory can be applied to analyze and evaluate the translations. The poem Deng Guanquelou and its translated versions can be approached and compared within the Hallidayan framework in so far as the translation processes and details can be better comprehended and described. The applicability and operability of functional grammar can be validated by virtue of the analysis of the translations.

A Comparative Study of Obama's Closing Statements in the 2012 US Presidential Debates: Lessons Learned from a Systemic-Functional Analysis

In this paper, we present a comparative study of Obama's closing statements in the presidential debates, in particular, the first and third debates with Mitt Romney in 2012. Obama was considered to have done poorly in the first debate, but very well in the third debate. A systemic-functional analysis of Obama's closing statements in these two debates reveals the lexicogrammatical and rhetorical choices which contribute to the functional and aesthetic value of Obama's debate performance.

A Bayesian Network Approach for Offshore Risk Analysis Through Linguistic Variables

This paper presents a new approach for offshore risk analysis that is capable of dealing with linguistic probabilities in Bayesian networks （ BNs）. In this paper, linguistic probabilities are used to describe occurrence likelihood of hazardous events that may cause possible accidents in offshore operations. In order to use fuzzy information, an f-weighted valuation function is proposed to transform linguistic judgements into crisp probability distributions which can be easily put into a BN to model causal relationships among risk factors. The use of linguistic variables makes it easier for human experts to express their knowledge, and the transformation of linguistic judgements into crisp probabilities can significantly save the cost of computation, modifying and maintaining a BN model. The flexibility of the method allows for multiple forms of information to be used to quantify model relationships, including formally assessed expert opinion when quantitative data are lacking, or when only qualitative or vague statements can be made. The model is a modular representation of uncertain knowledge caused due to randomness, vagueness and ignorance. This makes the risk analysis of offshore engineering systems more functional and easier in many assessment contexts. Specifically, the proposed f-weighted valuation function takes into account not only the dominating values, but also the a-level values that are ignored by conventional valuation methods. A case study of the collision risk between a Floating Production, Storage and Off-loading （FPSO） unit and the anthorised vessels due to human elements during operation is used to illustrate the application of the proposed model.

社论作者假定存在一些潜在受众,在写作过程中与这些受众进行交流、结成群体关系,以期达到引导舆论、劝服受众接受社论提出观点的目的。研究以《中国日报》英文版的社论语篇为语料,以系统功能语言学个性化(individuation)之联合关系(affiliation)为分析框架,以评价系统和概念系统为理论基础,探讨社论作者和潜在受众之间群体关系的话语建构模式及建构策略。研究发现,社论作者通过[态度+概念实体]耦合体(evaluative coupling)联合持有相同观点的潜在受众,并通过实体间的语义关系(分类关系和组成关系)将持有不同观点的潜在受众联合起来,实现劝说目的。研究在一定程度上发展了个性化关系,并且为社论语篇劝说性研究提供了一个新的语言学视角。

华兹华斯自然诗歌的生态话语分析--以《致杜鹃》为例

英国诗人威廉·华兹华斯创作了许多首描述和歌颂大自然的诗歌。以《致杜鹃》为研究语料,基于系统功能语言学的三大元功能理论,从生态话语分析的角度对华兹华斯的自然诗歌进行解读后发现,诗人将人与自然万物的关系视作和谐共生、平等对话的伙伴关系,作品反映了其持有积极正面的生态观。运用系统功能语言学,从及物性、语气、情态和主位结构等层面能够较好地剖析自然诗歌中蕴含的生态思想,显示出系统功能语言学在生态话语分析上的适用性。

将生态话语分析与系统功能语言学结合,对梭罗的诗歌《请问这甜美的寒冷属于何方》进行功能语篇分析,希望借此揭示诗人如何借诗歌诠释其生态自然观,同时挖掘自然诗歌如何积极影响人们的生态观,进而促进人们共同关爱生态环境。
