In the MIG welding-brazing process, the lower thermal conductivity of steel can cause dramatic change of temperature gradient on steel surface, while the auxiliary TIG arc can change this phenomenon by heating the steel side. The auxiliary TIG improved the wettability of molten metal, resulting in the molten metal spreading fully on upper surfaces, front and back surface of steel, forming a sound brazing joint; the content of Cr and Ni elements in IMCs layer was increased, which can enhance the quality of the layer; and the microstructure of IMCs layer also was improved, increasing the bonding strength with the weld seam. The average tensile strength of the joint obtained with auxiliary TIG arc(146.7 MPa) was higher than that without auxiliary TIG arc(96.7 MPa).展开更多
The dissimilar joints of AZ61 and ZK60 magnesium alloys were obtained by tungsten inert gas arc(TIG)welding and activating tungsten inert gas arc(A-TIG)welding processes.Microstructure characterization shows that,the ...The dissimilar joints of AZ61 and ZK60 magnesium alloys were obtained by tungsten inert gas arc(TIG)welding and activating tungsten inert gas arc(A-TIG)welding processes.Microstructure characterization shows that,the fineα-Mg equiaxed dendrite crystals contained Mg17Al12 and MgZn2 particles in the fusion zone.The average size of theα-Mg grains in the fusion zone was refined to 19μm at welding current of 80 A,which resulted in the largest tensile strength of 207 MPa.The tensile strength and the width of the beam of the A-TIG welded AZ61/ZK60 joints showed strong dependence on the amount of TiO2.However,the inhomogeneity of the heat-affected zone near different base metals presented no significant effect on the mechanical properties of the welded joint.展开更多
In the double-sided arc welding system (DSAW) composing of PAW+TIG arcs, the PAW arc is guided by the TIG arc so that the current mostly flows through the direction of the workpiece thickness and the penetration is gr...In the double-sided arc welding system (DSAW) composing of PAW+TIG arcs, the PAW arc is guided by the TIG arc so that the current mostly flows through the direction of the workpiece thickness and the penetration is greatly improved. To analyze the current density distribution in DSAW is beneficial to understanding of this process. Considering all kinds of dynamic factors acting on the weldpool, this paper discusses firstly the surface deformation of the weldpool and the keyhole formation in PAW+TIG DSAW process on the basis of the magnetohydrodynamic theory and variation principles. Hence, a model of the current density distribution is developed. Through numerical simulation, the current density distribution in PAW+TIG DSAW process is quantitatively analyzed. It shows that the minimal radius of keyhole formed in PAW+TIG DSAW process is 0.5 mm and 89.5 percent of current flows through the keyhole.展开更多
The main objective of this investigation is to study the influence of arc constriction current frequency(ACCF)on tensile properties and microstructural evolution of aerospace Alloy 718 sheets(2 mm in thickness)joined ...The main objective of this investigation is to study the influence of arc constriction current frequency(ACCF)on tensile properties and microstructural evolution of aerospace Alloy 718 sheets(2 mm in thickness)joined by constricted arc TIG(CA-TIG)welding process.One variable at a time approach of design of experiments(DOE)was used,in which ACCF was varied from 4 to 20 kHz at an interval of 5 levels while other parameters were kept constant.The joints welded using ACCF of 4 kHz exhibited superior tensile properties extending joint efficiency up to 99.20%.It is attributed to the grain refinement in fusion zone leading to the evolution of finer,discrete Laves phase in interdendritic areas.An increase of ACCF above 12 kHz caused severe grain growth and evolution of coarser Laves phase in fusion zone.Alloy 718 welds showed more obvious tendency for Nb segregation and Laves phase formation at higher levels of ACCF due to the slower cooling rate.The volume fraction of Laves phase was increased by 62.31%at ACCF of 20 kHz compared to that at 4 kHz,thereby reducing the tensile properties of joints.This is mainly due to the stacking of heat input in weld thermal cycles at increased levels of ACCF.展开更多
