It includes seven different tectonic\|sedimentary units from north to south as follows: Gangdese arc complex keeping the Sangri Group inside, the Qiuwu Formation, the Giabulin Formation, the Xigaze Group, ophiolitic massifs, the Liuqu Group, and melange zones (Wang et al., 1999). Current models, which mainly focus on researches at the unit of ophiolitic massifs, propose that most of the Tethyan oceanic lithosphere was subducted into one single subduction zone active during the Middle Cretaceous or the Late Cretaceous, and closed during the Paleogene India\|Asia collision. In this report, we present latest research results on units in the Xigaze forearc basin and others in YZSZ after 6\|year\|period of comprehensive investigations. Chronostratigraphy framework, sedimentology, and evolution of the Xigaze forearc basin are discussed in details. Four thrust systems in YZSZ are named. Dynamic evolution of the YZSZ including two subductions of Tethys is presented.展开更多

The proposed approach was based on the polarized ratio index (PRI), which was computed by using AMSR-E data at 37GHz, vertically and horizontally polarized brightness temperature values and the water surface fraction (WSF) got by using the PRI at 37GHz. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrora-diometer (MODIS) data were used to validate the WSF values. The analysis of flood and waterlogging using the WSF map on July 6, 2003 indicates that the use of WSF for flood and waterlogging disaster assessment is feasible. Utilizing the correlation of WSF derived from AMSR-E and water area derived from MODIS, the water area of the Huaihe River Basin were computed by only using AMSR-E data in the summer of 2003, which overcame the influence of cloud on water estimation using MODIS data during flood.展开更多

Inte-grating geological and geophysical data, two different groups of Late Cretaceous faults were recognized in the study area, one group consisting of E-W extending strike-slip faults (e.g., the Maxian and Yema-Jinan faults in the Mahai area, which caused an E-W omission zone of Mesozoic), while the other one has NW-SE thrust faults, resulting in NW-SE fold-and-thrust belts. Considering the different strikes and scale of these two groups, a simple-shear model has been employed to explain this structural phenomenon. The NW-SE thrust faults were thought to be subsidiary to the E-W strike-slip faults. Putting this into the framework of the Cretaceous paleogeographic environment of central Asia, it is inferred that this tectonic event of the Qaidam Basin is a response to the continuous northward drifting of the India plate.展开更多

The fine particles that enter these basins have been shown to provide protection for bacteria;the small pores of clays and silts minimize predators and block sunlight. Therefore, while these basins decrease sediment loadings to water bodies downstream, they may introduce harmful levels of pathogenic bacteria into surface waters. In addition to causing human health risks, high bacteria levels alter natural biological makeup of downstream ecosystems. This paper describes the attachment of Escherichia coli to various particle sizes in construction site sediment basins. Five sediment basins, located in Anderson, South Carolina were sampled after rain events to explore trends that exist between various particle sizes and E. coli densities. Results provide evidence to suggest that sediment basins are a reservoir for pathogenic bacteria. Data showed that most E. coli attached to smaller particles with diameters less than 0.004 mm. These particles do not settle out of the water column quickly and are often passed through the basin during intense storms. Consequently, high levels of bacteria are passed to downstream waters. This research provides considerable evidence that the clays and silts within man-made construction basins can cause detrimental effects to South Carolina surface waters. With this knowledge, better stormwater management practices may be developed with the goal of remediating impaired surface waters of South Carolina.展开更多

Four types of sandstone are collected in the northern part of the Madina Kouta basin (eastern Senegal). These types of specimens are the white sandstones, the red sandstones, the purple sandstones and the sandstones with intercalation of pelites. Uniaxial tests are carried out on these specimens of sandstones. The Young Moduli (E) and the Uniaxial Compression Strengths (Rc) are higher for the white sandstone. Values of the mechanical parameters decrease slightly for red sandstones due to an increase of the amount of pelites in the composition of the rock. Decrease of mechanical parameters is more important for the purple facies due to an important network of fractures. The facies with weaker characteristics corresponds to the sandstones with intercalation of pelites. This is due to the soft nature of the pelites. The slope stability of the Cliff sides depends also on to these characteristics.展开更多

Based on the catchments characteristics the tributaries or reaches can be classified into 4 types, including headwater in mountainous areas (type Ⅰ), agricultural non-point source (NPS) pollution in rural areas (type Ⅱ), municipal and industrial pollution in urban areas (type Ⅲ), and combined pollution in main stream (type IV). Water samples were collected monthly from July 2003 to June 2006 in the Cao-E River Basin in Zhejiang, eastern China. The concentrations of NO3^--N, NH4^+ -N, and total nitrogen (TN) were measured. The mean concentrations of NO3^- -N were decreased in the sequence type IV 〉 type Ⅱ〉 type Ⅲ 〉 type Ⅰ, whereas, NH4^+-N, total organic nitrogen (TON), and TN were in the sequence: type Ⅲ〉 type Ⅳ 〉 type Ⅱ〉 type Ⅰ. In headwater and rural reaches, CNO^-2-N was much higher than Crea^+ 4-N. In urban reaches, TON and NH4^+ -N were the main forms, accounting for 54.7% and 32.1% of TN, respectively. In the whole river system, Crea^+ 4--N decreased with increasing distance from cities, and CNo^-3 -N increased with the increasing area of farmland in the catchments. With increased river flow, CNO^-3 N increased and Crea4^+-N decreased in all types of reaches, while the variations of CTON and CTN were different. For TN, the concentration may be decreased with the increase of river flow, but the export load always increased.展开更多
