This trace can be used to derive useful information of their past, present activity and forecast the future intentions. Hence, social network of academic researchers can be of important value for scientific community. This information can be retrieved from various data source currently available on the Web. From each of them a separate net-work can be built. In this paper we present a method which can be used to combine multiple single-relational networks into a single network which will combine all relations, hence it will be multi-relational.展开更多

Our ability to capitalize on the strengths of our specific institutional environments and respond to information needs is ever more important if we are to remain central to the work of our academic enterprise. This article describes how the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ' s Health Sciences Library(HSL) has sought opportunities and established successful partnerships that integrate library expertise aligning with the two core strategies of Carolina's new strategic framework Blueprint for Next: Of the Public,For the Public, and Innovation Made Fundamental. These efforts have resulted in initiatives that improve access to quality health care and health care information for North Carolinians, accelerate the campus' research enterprise, and demonstrate the importance of evidence-based care at UNC and globally. By understanding and identifying the needs of our various stakeholders,we have been able to progress with our understanding of what key problems need to be solved, what interventions need to be developed, and in what ways librarians can integrate expertise around information synthesis and critical thinking so that we are seen as valued partners in our complex academic environment.展开更多

Methods:Twenty-seven and 25 medical research articles in the field of internal medicine were selected from English and Chinese respectable jour nals, respectively. Then, the speech acts that reflected a conflict between a scientist's knowledge claim and another scientist's knowledge claim were manually searched and recorded in each paper. Data were analyzed using non-parametric Chi-test. Results:There were 123 academic conflicts recorded in the English corpus and 49 Academic Conflicts in the Chinese corpus. Significant difference was observed in the overall frequency of academic conflicts between the English and Chinese medical discourse (p=0.001). Besides, as for the distribution within research articles, introduction and discussion sections were the sections where Academic Conflict speech acts were most likely to occur in both corpra. Conclusion:The Chinese scholars are less likely to criticize peers. Introduction and discussion sections were the sections where Academic Conflict speech acts were most likely to occur. Our results are in agreement with previous results and confirmed the claim that highly different cultures vary in their discourse preferences. Our findings are of pedagogical significance.展开更多

At the UCLA Library, four principles underlie changes that have been made to support teaching, learning, and research by UCLA students, faculty, researchers, and staff. Efforts have focused on building and enhancing research collections, enriching the student experience through expanded teaching and learning services, transforming the Library's role to support the entire research process, and re-conceptualizing the physical and virtual spaces of the Library to create an expansive and flexible scholarly environment. To support and inform these efforts, the Library is building a robust research agenda and deepening opportunities for faculty engagement. These changes challenge the traditional model of library staffing, and the Library has responded by identifying new areas in which leadership is needed and new recruitment tracks for academic appointments. Implementing such a transformative process has many stakeholders and requires broad input, discussion, and committed engagement to ensure its success.Design/methodology/approach: The UCLA Library has developed its strategic planning process over several years building on broad constituent input, unit and individual work plans, and constituent feedback. The process is high level as well as operational in nature and draws on basic metrics to motivate change.Findings: The four principles of the transition have been sustained over a period of years.Implications and limitations: This article is the personal observation of the author drawing on his own leadership experience and informed by the senior management and staff of the UCLA Library.Originality/value: The process and direction of this transition are focused on the UCLA Library and its role in the UCLA academy.展开更多

Our research findings show that citations per paper and A-index are more suitable for assessing the highly accomplished senior Chinese medical professionals(e.g. academicians) for their domestic and international scholarship attainment. In contrast, the m-quotient is not deemed appropriate to assess their academic influence both at home and abroad. Upon our further analysis of 6 evaluative indicators, we noticed that these indicators might be applied in two different aspects: One is from the viewpoint of Chinese scholars' academic influence at home, which has been evaluated mainly from the perspective of 'total' amount and 'average' amount of both publications and citations. The other is from their academic impact embodied by the means of documents retrieved from the Web of Science, which is mainly assessed from the two viewpoints of publications and citations. It is suggested that the accumulated time-length of a given scholar's active engagement in professional practice in a specific subject area be taken into consideration while assessing a researcher's performance at home and abroad.展开更多

A distribution curve of fuzzy words in management research articles is drawn in accordance with the structures of the articles, and it is proved to be reasonable for tile discourse function of each section. Furthermore, the fuzzy words are divided into three categories and eleven sub-categories, including Category Ⅰ-fuzzy words, Category Ⅱ-fuzzy words+non-fuzzy part / non-fuzzy part+fuzzy words, Category Ⅲ-approximators+fuzzy words. Distribution of fuzzy words varies in different sections of research articles in management science, because of different communicative purposes or discourse functions. Introduction section and Conclusion section have a higher occurrence rate of fuzzy words than Abstract section and Methodology and Data section.展开更多
