The critical impact velocity of fracture ranges from 217 m/s to 236 m/s. Smooth surfaces and ductile dimple areas were observed on the fracture surfaces. As the impact velocity reached 260 m/s, the serious melting regions were also observed on the fracture surfaces. Self-organization of cracks emerges when the impact velocity reaches 260 m/s, while some special cracks whose "tips" are not sharp but arc and smooth, and without any evidence of deformation or adiabatic shear band were also observed on the impact end surfaces. Examination of the sections of these special cracks reveals that the cracks expand along the two maximum shear stress directions respectively, and finally intersect as a tridimensional "stagger ridge" structure.展开更多

The ideal elasto-plastic constitutive model of material under a Taylor impact is characterized by the Jaumann stress- and strain-rates. An updated Lagrangian format is used for the calculation in a nu- merical analysis. With the RKPM, this paper deals with the calculation model for the Taylor impact and deduces the control equation for the impact process. A program was developed to simulate numerically the Taylor impact of projec- tiles composed of several kinds of material. The simulation result is in good accordance with both the test results and the Taylor analysis outcome. Since the meshless method is not limited by meshes, it is believed to be widely applicable to such complicated processes as the Taylor impact, including large deformation and strain and to the study of the dy- namic qualities of materials.展开更多

The influence of fracture criterion in numerical simulations of the deformation and fracture behavior of Taylor rod has been studied. The following fracture criterions, included a modified version of Johnson-Cook, the Cockcroft-Latham(C-L), the constant fracture strain, the maximum shear stress and the maximum principle stress fracture models, have been used in this paper. Model constants for each criterion are calibrated from material tests. The modified version of Johnson-Cook fracture criterion with the stress triaxiality cut-off idea used can give good prediction to the Taylor impact fracture behavior. However, the C-L fracture criterion with only a constant required for calibrating by a simple test is found to give reasonable predictions. Unfortunately, the other three criteria are not able to repeat the experimentally obtained fracture behavior. The result indicates that the stress triaxiality cut-off idea is necessary to predict the Taylor impact fracture.展开更多

Nowadays, the rigid anvil is often replaced by an output target bar to ensure the accuracy of measurement via recording strain signals in the output bar. For testing the dynamic strength of low-density materials, a low-impedance target bar, which exhibits viscoelastic characteristics is often employed. In this paper, an extended Taylor model is proposed to improve the idealization of treating the target bar as perfectly rigid material in the classic Taylor model, and the viscoelastic effect of the target bar is incorporated. The viscoelastic target bar is depicted by two elastic springs and one dashpot. Based on the plastic shock wave theory in the flat-nosed projectile associated with the viscoelastic wave analysis in the target bar, the viscoelastic effect of the target bar on the impact response of the flat-nosed projectile is investigated. The finite element simulation is also carried out to verify the theoretical model, and good agreement is found. The present theoretical model is also called the Taylor-cylinder Hopkinson impact, which provides a more accurate way to identify the dynamic material parameters. The dynamic responses of the present model are further compared with previous elastic and rigid target bar models. It is found that the viscoelastic effect of the target bar should be taken into consideration in the Taylor-cylinder Hopkinson impact test for low-impedance materials.展开更多
