Low temperature together with snow/freezing rain is disastrous in winter over southern China.Previous studies suggest that this is related to the sea surface temperature(SST)anomalies, especially La Nina conditions, over the equatorial central–eastern Pacific Ocean(EP).In reality, however,La Nina episodes are not always accompanied by rainy/snowy/icy(CRSI)days in southern China, such as the case in winter 2020/2021.Is there any other factor that works jointly with the EP SST to affect the winter CRSI weather in southern China? To address this question,CRSI days are defined and calculated based on station observation data, and the related SST anomalies and atmospheric circulations are examined based on the Hadley Centre SST data and the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data for winters of1978/1979–2017/2018.The results indicate that the CRSI weather with more CRSI days is featured with both decreased temperature and increased winter precipitation over southern China. The SSTs over both the EP and the southeastern Indian Ocean(SIO)are closely related to the CRSI days in southern China with correlation coefficients of-0.29 and 0.39,significant at the 90%and 95%confidence levels, respectively. The SST over EP affects significantly air temperature,as revealed by previous studies, with cooler EP closely related to the deepened East Asian trough, which benefits stronger East Asian winter monsoon(EAWM)and lower air temperature in southern China.Nevertheless, this paper discovers that the SST over SIO affects precipitation of southern China, with a correlation coefficient of 0.42,significant at the 99%confidence level, with warmer SIO correlated with deepened southern branch trough(SBT)and strengthened western North Pacific anomalous anticyclone(WNPAC),favoring more water vapor convergence and enhanced precipitation in southern China.Given presence of La Ni?a in both winters, compared to the winter of 2020/2021,the winter of 2021/2022 witnessed more CRSI days, perhaps due to the warmer SIO. 展开更多

Yin and Yang are important concepts in ancient Chinese philosophy. Western scholars have become more familiar with these two concepts recently, but for a long time almost no one considered comparing them with their own tradition such as the ancient Greek philosophy, and especially with the ideas of the Hot and the Cold in Presocratic philosophy. In this paper, I make an attempt to do exactly that, and especially make a detailed comparison between the thoughts of two ancient thinkers: Laozi and Anaximander. I discuss the thought of Y/n and Yang in Laozi--who was the earliest philosopher making use of the concepts Y/n and Yang--to express his cosmological thought in ancient Chinese philosophy. Comparatively, 1 discuss the ideas of the Hot and the Cold in Anaximander, the earlier among Presocratic philosophers referring to the Hot and the Cold as fundamental concepts used to establish his cosmological system. Through this comparison, I indicate that the similarity between ancient Chinese and Western traditions is far more significant than what people are used to imagining. 展开更多

Mountain tunnels in cold regions are vulnerable to adverse effects of freezing action. Thus,it is necessary to identify the lining responses of shallow mountain tunnels subjected to freezing action. To quantify the influence of freezing action and key design parameters(such as cross-sectional shape;lining thickness;and waterproof measures)on the lining response,a thermal-hydro-mechanical coupled finite element(FE)model is established and verified. Then, specific consideration is given to the lining internal force and resulting axial stresses. And the influences of the cross-sectional shape, concrete parameters, and waterproof measures on the lining responses are investigated.Generally, the rectangular tunnel has the worst security;the circular tunnel is the safest. On the other hand, when the thermal conductivity is less than 2.2[W/(m·K)],a greater thermal conductivity will cause a greater risk of damage to the lining. Moreover, the drainage plate can reduce the value of minimum axial stresses, whether frozen or not, even eliminating the tensiondamaged area.Overall, this study helps to estimate the lining responses and prevent frost damages for shallow mountain tunnels during freezing period. 展开更多

The Hidden Helping Hand: The U.S. Government's Assistance to Chinese Returnees, 1949-1955

Despite serious difficulties caused by the civil war in China and the military confrontation in Korea, over 1,200 Chinese students and scholars returned from the United States (U.S.) to their homeland in the 1950s. While the effort made by the returnees and the Communist regime has been studied, the role played by the U.S. government remains unclear. Relying mostly on archived government documents and published individual recollections, this paper shows that Washington provided most of its assistance to the Chinese students through the emergency aid program, which not only covered all the educational costs for about three quarters of them, but also paid travel expenses for about two thirds of the returnees. In addition, Washington assisted many students in obtaining visas from the British government for their transfer in Hong Kong and offered them room, board, and other services while they were waiting for their transportation in San Francisco. The examination of the helping hand extended by Washington to these returning Chinese students can enhance our understanding of the complex and dynamic nature of Sino-American relations during the Cold War. 展开更多

To understand and perceive the foreign relations of contemporary Egypt, the focus must be placed on four essential starting points, namely, geography, interests, the Cold War and the leaders of Egypt. As the basis of Egypt’s foreign relations, the geography of Egypt determines fundamental directions of Egypt’s foreign relations:the Arab world,Israel, great powers,Europe and Africa.Although safeguarding national interests is the fundamental starting point in Egypt’s foreign relations, the national interests of Egypt have different points of emphasis at different times.Additionally,Egypt still bears the mission of protecting the interests of the Arab nation. As the international background of Egypt’s foreign relations before the 1990s,the Cold War had great impact on many aspects of Egypt’s foreign relations;the United States and the Soviet Union were top priority in its foreign relations during that period of time.Under the unique political mechanism,Egyptian leaders have supreme power in foreign policy decision-making and Egypt’s foreign relations are branded with a mark of personal traits of Egyptian leaders.Despite the recent Egyptian political mutation, geography, interest and leaders are still the basic focus of external relations of Egypt,so Egyptian diplomatic pattern is unlikely to have dramatic changes. 展开更多
