Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) arrived from China to Latin America and the Caribbean in the 1840s due to the massive migration of Chinese people to the region. In a few years, the press noticed the presence of Chinese herbalists practicing in different cities and countries regardless of the demographic weight of the Chinese community. The fascination with Chinese doctors implicated not only the press but also the literature, a phenomenon particularly observed in Cuba. In the first decades of the 20th century, the reactivation of Chinese immigration to the region fostered an anti-Chinese climate that materialized in more significant migratory restrictions and control of their businesses, such as what happened with Chinese herbalists. These herbalists who practiced inside and outside the Chinese community started to object to criticism and persecution by the conservative press and professional doctors. Despite this, Chinese doctors will continue to maintain their support of a significant number of ill persons. This work seeks to illuminate the historical relevance of TCM in Latin America and the Caribbean, focusing on the cases of Peru, Chile, and Cuba. This last country was far from China culturally and geographically, but as in many other small towns in the region, Chinese medicine presented an alternative to the treatment of illnesses. 展开更多

The education and research of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)in Malaysia started coincidentally circa Malaysia’s independence movement. Before the independence, much of the development focused on establishing treatment centers and Chinese medical halls to provide TCM treatment.Periodicals and journals advocating TCM and its advancement were published between the 1940s and 1960s,but many did not survive after a few issues. The challenge posed by the Immigration Ordinance 1952 further united TCM practitioners and TCM associations to establish the Chinese Medical Institute of Malaya. The trend gained momentum, and many educational institutes were set up in each of Malaysia. From the 1970s,Malaysia started hosting regional and international TCM conferences. In 2000,TCM education in Malaysia had finally gained recognition from the government.ATCM program standard was thus released by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency(MQA).To date, there are seven private higher education institutions which offer TCM programs based on the MQA standards and have established international collaborations with other universities. It is projected that Malaysia’s TCM education and research will grow further as a result of China’s Belt and Road initiative. 展开更多

The increasing number of TCM practitioners and herbal suppliers, both of which accelerated by the formation of various TCM institutions, substantiated the creation of regional traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)associations in post-World War II Malaya. In response to the restrictions and levies imposed by the British colonial government, these regional associations united and formed a national organisation now known as the Federation of Chinese Physicians and Medicine Dealers Association of Malaya(FCPMDAM).The current designated TCM practitioner body, the Malaysian Chinese Medical Association(MCMA)were also originally established to nurture local talents in the face of import restrictions.Owing to difference with MCMA,a separate association named the Federation of Chinese Physicians and Acupuncturists Associations of Malaysia(FCPAAM)was setup in 2003 to absorb self-studied and patrimonial-educated TCM practitioners. 展开更多

Objective: This review introduced the origin, developing course and modern application of Chinese food therapy (CFT) in traditional Chinese medicine to enrich our understanding of relevant concepts and ways. Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, CBM, CNKI, VIP and Wanfang Databases were searched for papers on a range of terms relating to CFT. 41 references were finally selected for this review. Results: The development of CFT is comprised of five important periods in Chinese history. They axe as following: the infancy period represented by the idea of homogeny of medicine and food; theoretical development period represented by Inner Canon of Yellow Emperor, Shennong 1' Classic of Materia Medica and Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases; specialized volumes on CFT represented by Dietotherapy Worth a Thousand Gold; representative monographs on CFT represented by Dietetic Materia Medica and Principles of Correct Diet and the perfect period represented by integration of ancient food therapy practice and modern nutriology. Conclusion: CFT harbors a long and profound history, making great contribution to people's health maintenance and illness prevention. With the further development of integrative medicine, CFT may play a more important role in clinics and family health care based on integration of syndrome differentiation and disease differentiation. 展开更多

Saffron(Stigma Croci)is an autumn-flowering perennial plant, and its use has a history of over 3500 years.Saffron has often been considered as the costliest medicinal plant,a premium spice, and the best dye with a golden yellowish color.Iran currently produces the finest quality saffron and dominates its global production(>90%).Other countries such as Australia,Canada, the USA,China, and some countries in Central Africa, produce saffron at a lower yield. In China, saffron is celebrated as“red gold”owing to the red stigmas of the flower and its price, which is comparable to the price of gold.Saffron has been one of the most attractive traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)herbs in the Zhong Guo Yao Dian(《中国药典》Chinese Pharmacopoeia)since its inclusion in the 2005 edition. The earliest use of saffron in TCM was recorded in the Ben Cao Shi Yi(《本草拾遗》Supplement to Materia Medica)written during the Tang dynasty(741 A.D.).However,saffron grown in inland China has been widely mistaken as originating from Tibet. This is because its Chinese name begins with“Xi”or“Zang,”which sounds similar to its Tibetan name(“Xi Zang”).In this review,we clarify the origin of saffron and its introduction to China and summarize its various applications. 展开更多

This essay reviews Zhang Longxi's A History of Chinese Literature. The book covers Chinese literature from its very beginning to modern times. It emphasizes texts'literary and aesthetic qualities when evaluating and historicizing literature. The book demonstrates the importance of canons in literary history, using Chinese tradition as an example. Therefore,it also brings the Chinese tradition into the broader framework of world literature.Reading Zhang's concise historical overview of Chinese literature,we can better understand the interplay between literary tradition and the individual talent.Zhang Longxi has skillfully combined the writing of a history of literature with literary criticism in this book.Zhang's successful attempt informs literary scholars of possible paradigms of compiling literary history in a post-cultural-studies theoretical context. 展开更多

The formation of the Chinese nation as one community is not only the result of the interaction of various factors such as politics, economy, culture, and natural environment, but also an inevitable trend in historical development. However, cultural identity and integration are the most important factors.Classics are the essence of national culture, and they have always played an important role in shaping, communicating, identifying, and integrating ethnic cultures. In Chinese history, regardless of whether various ethnic groups were in control of a region or entered the Central Plains, they relied on reading Chinese classics and learning Chinese culture as the basis for their survival, and identified themselves as members of the Chinese nation. This eternal historical law is particularly evident in the Liao,Western Xia,Jin,and Yuan dynasties.Summarizing the reading history of these ethnic groups and societies, learning from their historical experience, and exploring and inheriting the reading cultural resources of the Chinese nation are necessary for the formation of the Chinese nation as one community. 展开更多

In order to facilitate and propose further international standardization of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) terminology, this article applies methods of historiography, philology and descriptive study to divide the history of TCM into three phases, based on representative experts and social events; to illustrate different aspects of these experts and their translation principles and standards and to discuss associated factors and inherent problems. The authors find that the development of a terminology standard for TCM has generally progressed from early approaches that were ill-suited to the contemporary needs to culturally and professionally referenced approaches, from uncoordinated research to systematic studies, and from individual works to collaborative endeavors. The present international standards of TCM terminology have been attained through the work of numerous scholars and experts in the history of the field. The authors are optimistic that a more comprehensive and recognized standard will come out soon. 展开更多

Envisioned as a practice-based research, this paper explored Chinese traditional folk arts and crafts with a focus on traditional decorative patterns, vivid colors, and symbolic motifs that enliven Foshan style paper-cuttings, New Year wood block prints, paper kites, festival lanterns, and Shiwan pottery figures from the areas of Foshan and Shiwan, near Guangzhou, China. The goal of this research was to create a series of original paintings by investigating Chinese traditional folk arts and handcrafts and integrating them physically or ichnographically on Ho's new body of paintings. Chinese traditional motifs including Chinese characters and Buddhist iconographies had already been important motifs in the contemporary Western paintings of Kong Ho for the past 10 years. This paper examined not only the artistic, cultural, and historical values but also the impacts of Chinese traditional folk arts and era~ on Ho's painting through a personal research travel and studies of a certain amount of Chinese paper-cuttings, folk prints, pottery, and handcrafts found in the famous Foshan Folk Art Studio and Foshan City Shiwan Ceramics Factory in Foshan, China. Furthermore, this paper investigated the symbolic meanings founded in Ho's spiritual paintings with strong Chinese heritage and how he reinterpreted those artifacts in a contemporary context. 展开更多
