Visual media have dominated sensory communications for decades, and the resulting“visual hegemony”leads to the call for the“auditory return”in order to achieve a holistic balance in cultural acceptance.Romance of the Three Kingdoms,a classic literary work in China, has received significant attention and promotion from leading audio platforms. However, the commercialization of digital audio publishing faces unprecedented challenges due to the mismatch between the dissemination of long-form content on digital audio platforms and the current trend of short and fast information reception.Drawing on the Business Model Canvas Theory and taking Romance of the Three Kingdoms as the main focus of analysis, this paper argues that the construction of a business model for the audio publishing of classical books should start from three aspects:the user evaluation of digital audio platforms, the establishment of value propositions based on the“creative transformation and innovative development”principle, and the improvement of the audio publishing infrastructure to ensure the healthy operation and development of the digital audio platforms and consequently improve their current state of development and expand the boundaries of cultural heritage. 展开更多

As one of the Four Great Masterpieces of China,The Romance of the Three Kingdoms has become a landmark of ancient Chinese literature with vivid and profound character images, ups and downs of politics and war descriptions, and appealing historical plots. After being introduced to Japan in the second half of the 17th century,it was spread in Japanese society and was accepted for literary value, social needs and other reasons, then a series of evolutions were produced by combining with local culture, eventually becoming a national culture in Japan. This paper selects the most popular text of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms with 24 chapters and 120 verses in the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, and the Japanese translation of The Popular Romance of the Three Kingdoms published by Hunan Wenshan in 1689 as the objects, guided by Ralph Linton’s“Manifestation,Selection,Integration”cultural communication research method,to analyze the dissemination, acceptance and evolution of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms in 17-20 centuries’Japan, which started from the field of literature, then combined with various cultural forms and spread to the civic class, and finally entered politics area and produced a series of evolutions under the influence of Japanese values to become the representative culture of Japan. This paper suggests that in today’s world of frequent cultural exchanges,China should, based on strengthening cultural self-confidence,actively and appropriately select and accept foreign cultures with the attitude of prioritizing our own culture and utilizing foreign culture for our own purposes. The research outcome can provide experience for the current Chinese culture to go to the world with high quality. 展开更多

According to the research of Wen Jun and Li Peijia, this paper examins the articles and treatises regarding the English translations of Romance of the Three Kingdoms in China in the past five years. It is divided into four sections: Summary, Language, Literature and Culture. We point out the existing problems of the current studies;limited in traditional linguistic levels, leaning to the translation of Moss Roberts, neglecting the study of non-cover-to-cover translations, revelry at home and coldness abroad. Besides, we put forward the translation studies of Romance of the Three Kingdoms based on comparative literature to fill the gaps in the current research. The translation study of comparative literature pays attention to four aspects;literary translations and translated literature, cover-to-cover translations and non-cover-to-cover translations, C.H. Brewitt-Taylor and Moss Roberts, domestic and overseas. 展开更多

The Romance of the Forest, first published in 1791,was Ann Radcliffe’s first and major success, establishing her reputa⁃tion as one of the masters of Gothic novels in the eighteenth century.Given that Gothic novel is socially conservative, its construc⁃tion of female character has long been in line with the deep-rooted notion of the“proper women”,under which circumstance Ann’s treatment of feminism through Adeline is utterly confusing to many. Thus, based on Edmund Burke’s aesthetics concept of picturesque and sublime, this paper conducts a detailed analysis of the landscape in the novel,in an effort to argue that Ann con⁃structs a mixed female identity,an identity stressing on both feminine sensibility and masculine rationality. 展开更多

Gaskell, for all her sympathy for the lower orders, responds to questions posed by differences of class with a conciliatory spirit. She writes like a social realist, but when she is confronted with taking a position, she often opts for reconciliation or even escapism. Gaskell's ambivalent attitude towards social classes is brought to the forefront in Mary Barton (1847), which she originally entitled John Barton. The change of the title has led to critical argument that the novel is an artistic failure, and the shift from a political novel with a clear social purpose to a domestic romance which covers up social discontent is too unprepared and comes across as a fantasy on the part of the novelist. This peculiar structure of the novel reveals the limitation of Gaskell's social vision as a novelist. In North and South (1852), Gaskell presents the precarious situation of workers and their tense relations with industrialists in a more balanced way by giving more attention to the thinking and perspective of the employers, a narrative perspective far different from her treatment in Mary Barton which adopts the view of the working poor. The on-going social mobility and the shift of social gravity from the aristocracy to the mercantile, a historical reality which Matthew Arnold clearly delineates in Culture and Anarchy, are truthfully observed and represented by Gaskell and her representation of this new ruler class marks her progressive social view, expressing her optimistic belief in England's progress towards an industrial future. In an interval of seven years between the publications of the two novels in question, Gaskell's social vision had matured into critical realism. 展开更多

Herman Melville's Typee (1846) is a fictionalized account of Melville's sojourn in the Marquesas Islands. The book was originally published as an authentic travel narrative and Melville claimed the literal truth of the facts Although Typee was an immediate success, it stirred up a noisy controversy about Melville's veracity. This article argues that Typee is something between fiction and autobiography, romance and travel book. Today when literary categories are breaking down, we know that the point is not to choose between one another; but instead, to discover how the fact and fiction cohere or coincide 展开更多

Romance is the most lucrative genre of fiction in America.According to the Romance Writers of America, romance fiction is a billion-dollar industry with an estimated annual total sales value of$1.8 billion in 2013.Other genres do not come anywhere close to the sales of romantic fiction. This astonishing figure may well point to the undeniable fact that even in difficult times the formula of love, sex, and happily ever after still appeals to romance book buyers, most of whom are women. However, over a period of time there have also been changes to the conventions of the romance genre,as its writers(again, mostly women)get more attuned not only to the changing gender roles and the realities of women’s lives, but also to the pressing socio-economic and cultural issues of the time that often serve as backdrops to the love stories. This paper looks at a recent romance novel,Yours to Keep by Serena Bell whose protagonist,Ana Travares,is a woman of color and an undocumented immigrant from the Dominican Republic.Borrowing insights from Janice Radway’s Reading the Romance, this paper will undertake a cultural and literary analysis of Yours to Keep, focusing particularly on its narrative potential and its limitations, and the way its author,Serena Bell, attempts to reconcile the grim realities faced by undocumented immigrants in America with a more traditional romantic set-up. 展开更多

The Melodramatic Narrative and Ontological Quest in Demetria Martinez's Mother Tongue

The study deals with Demetria Martinez's Mother Tongue (1994), which is a love story between a Mexican American woman and a Salvadoran refugee. The female protagonist, Mary, delves into connotations of love, expanding it to understanding of the other. The story deploys politically imbricated religious practices in relation to the U.S. Sanctuary movement in the 80s. Mary's amorous encounter with the other leads her to discover the expansion of friendship and solidarity and, ultimately to rediscover religiosity based on reawakened ethics. This study argues that the melodramatic mode employed in this novel implicitly reveals an inherent aspiration for the sacred, albeit not fully representable. The author's involvement in the genre of romance and the melodramatic mode ironically attests to her striving for the spiritual ideal and ontological answer. In the end, this essay reveals that drawing on the popular melodramatic narrative, the romantic engagement with the alterity can be more efficiently introduced into the ontological quest for the absolute presence. 展开更多
