The Effects of Religion on the Immigration Process in the USA： An Experiment

This paper seeks to present how people＇s attitudes change according to the religion of immigrants and how this affects the immigrants＇ citizenship process in the USA. In general, immigration is a controversial issue, for that reason people may conceal their real thoughts and have a tendency to give the socially accepted answers. For that reason, in this paper the list experiment method is used to get the real opinions of people. Results indicate that, people in fact conceal their real thoughts in response to direct survey questions. In addition, the results show that Americans are generally concerned about immigration. However, when it is compared to Muslim and Christian immigrants, people are more likely to support granting citizenship to a Christian immigrant compared to a Muslim immigrant. The other most important finding is that being against Muslim immigrants is considered more acceptable. In other words, people may feel pressure to say that they do not support Muslim immigration, for that reason when it is asked directly, some people （more than 10%） automatically say that they are against Muslim immigrants compared to the findings in the list experiment.

Comparison of changes in land use and land cover in China and the USA over the past 300 years

Comparative studies of changes in land use and land cover between different countries over a long time-scale are helpful in understanding the processes and driving forces of these changes in different situations. We compared and analyzed the temporal and spatial characteristics of cropland, forest and grassland between China＇s mainland and the conterminous USA over the past 300 years. We found that, over the past 300 years, the area of cropland showed an overall increasing trend both in China and in the USA. In China, the area of cropland increased by about 79.46×104 km2 from 1661 to the 1980s, and the per capita cropland decreased from 0.37×104 m2 in 1685 to 0.10×104 m2 in 2000. For the USA, the area of cropland increased by 190.87×104 km2 between 1700 and 1950. The per capita cropland area of each time slice for the past 300 years was greater than 0.60×104 m2 and the maximum value was 2.01×104 m2 in 1890. As a result of the expansion in land reclamation, the forest and grassland areas of the USA have decreased by about 136.98×104 km2 and 136.98×104 km2, respectively, over the past 300 years; the corresponding values for China are about 89.73×104 km2 and 40.00×104 km2, respectively. In terms of the spatial patterns, the expansion in cropland in China mainly occurred in the border areas （including the northeast, southwest and Inner Mongolia） and in the hilly areas. Cropland expansion in the USA mainly occurred in the mid-west regions. In China, population growth is the most important driving factor in changes in land use and land cover, whereas in the USA, government policy plays the most significant role.

The Comparison of the Forms of Land Capability Classification of Atalay and USA in Eskişehir Province (Turkey)

Turkey is an area where climate changes immediately, vegetation, or land gets different in a short distance. Geological and lithological features show diversity. Also, our country’s territorial existence and diversity also bring about different land use conditions. Therefore, land capability also differs from each other. Nevertheless, the classification of land capability used in Turkey is the classification of land capability for agricultural lands prepared by the United States (USA) in 1961. Due to this, [1] have made suggestion on a new classification of land capability considering our country’s geographical conditions. In this study, comparing the land capability with the classification carrying out in our country, the classification which Atalay and Gündüzo&#287lu suggested, has been aimed. Working method has been established according to regional approach and field observations have been done. In preparing the cartographical material, ArcGIS 10.3 has been used. The map of this study as a material topography, physical map, slope, aspect, the usage of the land, ground, geology, land capability, geomorphology, temperature, and precipitation has been examined, meteorological data have been appreciated. According to the findings attained, Eski&#351ehir’s map of land capability has been done through the criteria of the suggestions of Atalay and Gündüzo&#287lu. As a result, it has been understood that there is a difference between the USA land capability that applied in Eski&#351ehir and Atalay and Gündüzo&#287lu’s criteria. In the study, it is suggested to determine the land capabilities again considering the ecological conditions of Turkey.

An empirical research is done on how political Obama＇s 2015 State of the Union Address as the corpora sample speeches adapt to context in the framework of adaptation theory, taking This paper shows that language choices in the State of the Union Address are adaptive to all the levels of the context, including communicative context （language users, mental world, social world, and physical world） and linguistic context. It is confirmed one of the theoretical stances of adaptation theory that there is no language use without being adaptive to context.

Opportunities and Challenges of Tight Oil Development in China

Tight oil is the unconventional oil resource developed and utilized by the world on the largest scale currently. The output of tight oil of the USA in 2016 was 220 million tons. According to the statistics of EIA, China has abundant tight oil resources, and its reserves rank No. 3 in the world. In the current situation of continuously low oil prices, through the technical progress and optimized management, the development costs of tight oil of the USA are continuously reduced, and the cost-effective development has been successfully realized. By contrast, China still has to carry out the further exploration in such aspects as policy guidance, understanding of tight oil resources, related technologies and management models. At present, through the positive exploration and practice, some oil fields in China have frist realized the cost-effective development of tight oil. By the summarization of existing successful experience and the study of advanced technologies of the USA in tight oil development, the sound engineering management system suitable for the development of tight oil resource in China is established, and great efforts should be exerted to realize the large-scale, cost-effective development of tight oil resources as soon as possible.

Comparative Study on Public Forest Management and Forest Law in France and USA

Though public forests in countries take up a small portion of forests, their importance in respect of environmental side looms large gradually. This paper studies and compares the public forest management and forest laws in France and the USA, attempting to explore the forest operation practice in both countries and the emphasis of the law governing forest management, so that a lesson can be drawn for us to learn in China.
