At present, most researches of poetic translatio on n base individual impression and perception, fail to comprehend the nouns of source text in categorization, and critical analysis on the translated nouns is not interpretable and verifiable. This paper first briefly introduces classical Chinese poetry, major classical Chinese poetry translation schools and their representatives, and professor XU Yuan-zhong's famous principle of "Beauty in three aspects". In order to help disseminate this part of Chinese culture through discussing how the reader of the translation may be inspired, moved and aesthetically entertained in the same way as one reads the original, this paper will analyze the classical poetry Chinese-English translation from the perspective of "Beauty in three aspects", namely, in three parts--beauty in meaning, beauty in sound and beauty in form. Tentatively establishing an evaluation system of CCP from the perspective of functional lin-guistics,based on three meta-functions proposed by Halliday, by applying the translation evaluation system, the quality of six trans-lated versions of 清明, a poem by Du Mu are assessed. By this case study, it is intended to prove the feasibility and practicability ofthis translation evaluation system, and then provide the suggestions on bettering the translated versions. 展开更多

This paper intends to study Ezra Pound's early poetics and his modemist poetry through a close research of the Eastern elements in the shaping process of his poetics and the significance and influence of his poetic thoughts on the American New Poetry Movement. In order to clarify the essence of Pound's early poetics under the influence of Chinese classical poems, the paper starts from the discussion of the influence of Cathay (1915) and his translation of Cathay; then it provides a detailed analysis of the relationship between Chinese classical poems and Pound's creation; and finally it has given an analysis of "In a Station of the Metro". Pound absorbed different poetic concepts from all of them and transformed his poetry from the conventional Romanticism to the innovative Modemism. What Pound innovated in the poetry composition is of great importance if the new era wishes to shake off the banality and out-of-date tradition in literature. Classical Chinese poems(CCP) is regarded as the inheritance and treasure of Chinese culture. CCP translation, on one hand, makes us have access to explore the linguistic charming and the cultural value of classical Chinese poems; on the other hand, it provides an opportunity to transmit Chinese classical culture into western culture. While translatability of CCP translation, coupled with its untranslatability is considered a contentious topic in translation circle. Admittedly, in the process of CCP translation, some problems or barriers turn out to be our stumbling stone. But generally speaking, most of the poetry are translatable and untranslatability can be transformed into translatability with certain strategies. This thesis have compared the similarities and differences between Chinese and western poems to analyze the reasons why CCP can or cannot be translated and lays much emphasis on untranslatability as well as the compensation of untranslatability. Lastly, foreignization and domestication are recommended as two strategies in CCP translation when untranslatability occurs. 展开更多

Chinese poetry has a very long and remarkable history.It is one of the most important representatives of China's ancient civilization of 5000 years.Chinese poetry utilizes quite a large number of methods in order to be more melodious and charming.Reduplicated words,as a figure of speech,are one of the most frequently used form among them.Reduplicated words as an active rhetorical device can add more flavor and taste to poems.They have the advantages of expressing the stylistic beauty effectively in form,sound and sense,thus push the article to its topmost aesthetic beauty.This paper,from a stylistic perspective,first discusses and argues the translatability of reduplicated words and then the importance to maintain the style of reduplicated words.After that it tries hard to put forward some favorable ways of dealing with the translation of reduplicated words so that reduplicated words in classical Chinese poetry can be appropriately translated without damage to the original style and flavor. 展开更多

When the umbrellas were held up against the tear gas attack in the protest on September 28, 2014, the hot issue raised by the marathon-like Yellow Umbrella Movement was not only the matter of politics but also a coincidence created for the Hong Kong locals to face, or to be faced with an already moot cliche: How the Hongkongese can redef'me and redeem their almost lost socio-cultural identity, particularly under the increasingly hegemonic influences and the socio-cultural invasion of the mainland after the 1997 Handover. My present paper is not intended to discuss the topic of identity on the platform of politics, or the postcolonial studies such as transculturation or cultural hybridty. But instead, I am far more interested in locating such issue on the aesthetic dimension of collective memory, which is revealed in two local contemporary Hong Kong compositions. In the process of shaping and reshaping a form of"HongKongeseness" in which the composers tend to create and the local listeners tend to experience, albeit transient, can appear in every nuance of the sonic metaphor embedded in the pre-existing indigenous tunes of a self-contained compositional work. 展开更多

In recent years,“aesthetics of atmospheres,”a concept introduced from Western aesthetics,has emerged in aesthetic studies,offering a new perspective to examine ancient Chinese poetry.In poetry,atmospheric beauty is neither fixed nor rationalized;rather,it is pervasive and ubiquitous,much like a mist.Atmosphere is something spatial but primarily something emotional.Atmosphere creation is the products of a poet’s emotional expression evoked by external objects;thus,evocation(gan-xing)is a catalyst for creating atmospheres.At its core,evocation is the process by which a poet is emotionally stimulated at the sight of external objects and generates a desire to express such emotions.In this process,the poet is connected with the outside world through senses such as sight and hearing and is presented with abundant physical images.When these physical images are incorporated into poems,they become atmospheric agents.In poetry,atmospheres represent the unity of emotions and intentions.They are a poet’s situational aesthetic experiences.The statement,“If there is no self in poetry,how can we possibly have poetry”holds significant theoretical importance in aesthetics.Synesthesia plays a crucial role during the creation of atmospheric beauty in poetry.By employing synesthesia,a poet can greatly enhance the tension in poetic language,extending the poetic beauty beyond a singular sensory experience,and creating rich atmospheres that blend sensations such as sound,color,and taste. 展开更多
