Angela Carter is a famous female writer in the 20 th century who is known for her feminism, Gothic feature and magical realism. She is good at rewriting classical tales and adding new ideas and concepts to them. The Company of Wolves is one of her rewriting pieces. In this story, Carter takes The Little Red Riding Hood as her writing base. At the same time, she challenges the idea of the inferiority and natural dependence of female in the original fairy tale.Carter defamiliarizes her story from the traditional one as well as imitates it. In this way, she produces psychical distance and gives readers a sense of freshness. This paper tries to analyse Carter's work from Bullough's"Theory of Psychical Distance". By analyzing the exceptional characters and their abnormal desires, it aims to reveal Carter's special way to produce psychical distance. 展开更多

The Company of Wolves is one of the most famous short stories written by Angela Carter, which is adapted from Charles Perrault’s fairy tale,Little Red Riding Hood.As a feminist writer,Carter realizes the misunderstanding and distortion of female images in traditional fairy tales in the shadow of patriarchal dominance. In The Company of Wolves Carter remained the main characters and plot of the original work, but she creatively fulfilled the story with her feminist thoughts, such as the new image of the protagonist, the unexpected plot and ending. In this novel, the smart and sexy Little Red Riding Hood’s journey to the forest deserves our attention, for which is no longer an ordinary visit to her grandmother, but a wonderful adventure as well as an inevitable way for female to establish their authority of voice. 展开更多

Different from the classic“Red Riding Hood”story, the girl in The Company of Wolves gives us a new image of how a woman is like in a patriarchal society.Carter’s portrayal of this girl withdraws from gender roles and cultural impressions in traditional works of literature and puts forward new ideas of sexuality, empowerment of women, and virginity. This essay intends to discuss that on the one hand, women can use their bodies as weapons against imbalanced power. On the other hand,Carter describes women’s desire for sex and love through body writing to show their awareness of sexual liberation and to break the male-dominated vision of gender and sexuality so that female gender subjectivity is rebuilt. 展开更多

The paper examines how the British woman writer Angela Carter rewrites Charles Perrault's household fairy tale--"Little Red Riding Hood" in her short story--"The Company of Wolves." This paper attempts to analyze the two distinctive narrative strategies--re-characterization and second-person narration, skillfully deployed by Carter in order to rewrite Perrault' s classic tale into a feminist story. In Carter's version, Little Red Riding Hood is represented as a witty new woman who embraces her own sexuality and regards herself as a subject rather than an object. Through the transposition between reader and character, Carter's tale produces a new subject position for readers, particularly for young female readers. 展开更多
