A New Concept in the Control of Iron Deficiency:Community-based Preventive Supplementation of At-Risk Groups by the Weekly Intake of Iron Supplements

Iron deficiency (ID), defined as an insufficient supply of iron to the cells of the body after iron reserves have been exhausted, is the most prevalent single nutritional deficiency, affecting over 2, 000 million people, mostly in the developing world. Infants, small children, adolescents and pregnant and fertile-age women are most vulnerable. Only about 50 % of people with ID develop iron deficiency anemia (IDA), since this is a late manifes tation of chronic ID. Based on the average daily iron requirement and on the rate of iron reutilization from red cell hemoglobin destruction, it can be estimated that after iron stores have been depleted, it takes about 4 months of ID erythropoiesis for adult women to have a drop in hemoglobin concentration [Hb] of 10 g/l, if the iron intake is only 70 % of requirement. IDA can be defined by a [Hb] below an appropriate cut-off point for age,sex, physiological condition and altitude above sea level, or by a [Hb] increment of morethan 10 g/l to the administration of adequate doses of iron. More than 85 % of the nutritional anemias are IDA alone, or of iron combined with folate or other nutrient deficiencies [WHO/UNICEF/UNU, 1997; Yip, 1994].

Iodization of Village Water Supply in the Control of Endemic Iodine Deficiency in Rural Sarawak, Malaysia

A simple water iodizing system, which incorporates the Venturi principle in combination with the controlled release mechanism of a silicone-sodium iodide elastomer, for the iodization of rural piped-water supply in the control of endemic iodine deficiency has been developed and its effectiveness evaluated in three Iban longhouse villages in the iodinedeficient district of Lubok Antu, Sarawak. Urines were collected for iodine assays from women aged 15-40 years before and at 6 and 12 months after the connection of the iodinating device; goiter assessment was performed on the women at the start and end of the 1-year study. Water samples were collected for iodine assays at 2-weekly intervals. In all three villages, significant and sustained increases in median urinary iodine excretions,reaching levels recommended for an iodine-suffcient population, were observed; goitre prevalences were reduced in all the villages (by 22.6% to 35.8%). The iodine levels in the water ranged from 34 μg/l to 212 μg/L. In the control village, median urinary iodine excretions remained essentially unchanged but a small increase in goiter prevalence was observed. The iodized water was well received by the villagers and no adverse effects of water iodization were observed. The system functioned unattended throughout the one year period. The cost of providing supplemental iodine via the iodizing device is approximately 60 cents (U.S.) per family per year which is affordable by either the Government or the villagers. It is concluded that the iodizing system offers a new cost-effective strategy for the control of endemic iodine deficiency in Sarawak and may have applications in other areas with similar water sources

A Genetic Algorithm for Optimizing Yaw Operation Control in Wind Power Plants

A genetic algorithm is proposed to optimize the yaw control system used for the stable and efficient operation of turbines in wind power plants.In particular,the factors that produce yaw static deviation are analyzed.Then,the sought optimization method for the yaw static deviation of the wind turbine is implemented by using a lidar wind meter in the engine room in order to solve the low accuracy problem caused by yaw static deviation.It is shown that fuzzy control can overcome problematic factors such as the randomness of wind direction and track the change of wind direction accurately.Power control implementation is simple,as only the voltage and current of the generator need to be measured.

Study of the Effect of Two New Types of IUDs,TCu380A and GyneFix on the Positive Rate of Chlamydia Trahmatis

To analyze the effect of two types of IUDs, TCu380A and GyneFix on the positive rate of Chlamydia Trahmatis (CT). Methods The TCu380A and GyneFix IUDs were compared in a randomized was for the one year and two year positive rate of Chlamydia Trahmatis (CT) and with the control respectively. Results The one year positive rate of CT antigens was 5.63% of TCu380A and two year was 4.92%; the one year positive rate of CT antigens was 4.62% and two year was 5.08% of GyneFix. There was no significant difference in the positive rate of CT antigen between the TCu380A IUD, and GyneFix IUDs groups, while there were significant differences between the TCu380A IUD, GyneFix IUD and the controls (15.18%) respectively. Conclusion Both IUDs provide highly effective protection against CT infection.

Modeling the control mechanism for generating the rise-fall patterns in FO contours

The strategy of modeling the control mechanism for generating F0 contour of speech signal is studied in this paper. Based on some dynamic characteristics of vocal cord strain, the complex laryngeal mechanism relative to local F0 regulation is simplified to be a feasible physical model. Furthermore, a model function is deduced as the control mechanism for the generation process of local rise-fall patterns, and two kinds of basic feature patterns result with so called rise-fall commands defined by model parameters. on the logarithmic scale of F0 versus time the local characteristics of an F0 contour are approximated by the sum of these patterns generated by appropriate commands. The experimenial results in analyzing and synthesizing the F0 contours of spoken Chinese utterances indicate that the observed F0 contours can be always approximated well by the model, and a good correlation exists between some model parameters and the transition duration of local F0 rising or falling. The model lays a foundation for Chinese F0 contour synthesis by rule.
