Application of the Politeness Principle in the Teachers-Students Communication

In daily communication between teachers and students,many Chinese teachers fail to use politeness principle tactfully or appropriately.This article analyzes some basic principles of politeness and their application in teachers-students communication.

Priority of the Politeness Principle over the Cooperative Principle in Communication

The Cooperative Principle that Grice proposes explains how conversational implicature is generated but it does not tell us why people are often inclined to convey what they want to say indirectly and implicitly by violating the maxims of the Cooperative Principle. Leech introduces the Politeness Principle to provide a reasonable explanation for this question, that is, for politeness. From the perspective of the purpose of communication, this article tries to argue that the Politeness Principle has the greater binding force in conversation and it should be given priority over the Cooperative Principle.

Politeness Principle and the Choice of Address Forms in Intercultural Communication

This paper makes a tentative study of the politeness strategies stressed in the choice of address forms in Chinese,American and Japanese culture under the guidance of Politeness Principle by Brown and Levinson.Through a comprehensive analysis,It is concluded that the major function of English address forms is to indicate solidarity and realize positive politeness,In contrast,both Chinese and Japanese address forms emphasize deference and help achieve negative politeness;It is the author's hope that a better understanding of these addressing rules in different cultures will benefit effective use of these languages and help avoid miscommunication in intercultural communication.

Perspectives on the Applicability of Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle in China

As two main universal principles in conversation,Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle play important roles in communication and intercultural communication.While in language teaching and learning in China,the neglect of the principles is caused by various reasons and thus leads to communication disorder in intercultural communication.The issue should draw the attention of English teachers who can lead students into the acquisition of the two principles in language learning.

To Club or Not to Club, That Is the Question Debating the Meaning of Catholic Identity for Universities in Today’s World

This case study presents the dilemma faced by a French university with Christian identity regarding a students’request to officially approve a club for the LGBTQ+community:which would be the most prudent response considering all matters involved?The case is disguised:it combines elements taken from very similar cases impacting today more than a few Catholic universities around the globe.Part A describes this university:history,principles and values,academic and financial information,relations with its stakeholders,etc.This part also describes its religious context and some relevant statistics regarding the LGTBQ+community.Finally,a series of opinions regarding the issue and how to answer the students’request presented in the form of an open discussion at the university’s steering committee provides different arguments in favor or against the approval.Part B offers some guidelines useful to take a prudent response considering all matters involved:legal,ethical,governance,and communicative.These guidelines are divided in three chapters:what should be the framework for such a discussion,strategic recommendations,and practical suggestions.Their aim is to provide a sort of a blueprint for university heads and administrators,to design a tailor-made response fitting the identity and stakeholders’map of their own university.

Analyzing the Transcripts of Desperate Housewives from the Perspective of Cooperate Principle

The cooperative principle put forward by Grice is an important part of pragmatics.The four maxims included in the cooperative principle are effective in analyzing people's conversation,and sometimes the violations of the four maxims can often generate the implicit meaning of conversation,which called conversational implicature,or achieve certain communicative effects such as humor,irony and so on.This article tries to analyze some transcripts from a popular TV series of America called Desperate Housewives season I from the perspective of cooperative principle to show how to infer the conversational implicature and communicative effects of people's conversation with cooperative principle.

The Application of Politeness Principle in Business English Letter

With the further globalization of China's economy and the continuous development of China's market economy in recent years,the foreign commercial activities of Chinese enterprises become more and more frequent.Subsequently,business correspondence becomes increasingly important because of its unique function in business trade.This paper combines the classical politeness theory of linguistics with the writing of business English letters,and analyzes the ways to realize politeness strategies in business English letters,so that people can better use politeness strategies to optimize the communication effect in international business communication.

Investigation on the communication network of long wire transmitting in remote welding

According to the characteristics of remote welding, including multiple parameters, real-time, and reliability of long wire transmitting, a distributing computer control scheme is adopted. A serial communication network between the master and the slavery computers is constructed. A synchro-control network among slavery computers is designed. Uniform message format and communication protocols are made. Considering intensive high-frequency noises at the welding zone, a quadruple check mode, including data sum check, parameter type check, welding parameters check and Exclusive OR （ XOR ） check, is adopted to assure the reliability of communication among multiple computers. Based on disturbing circuit, common circuit and sensitive circuit, the measures are brought forward to ensure the stabilization of communication network of remote arc welding by analyzing the wiring principle of anti-high-frequency interference of system bus, signal wires and shielding twisted-pair（STP） wires. The results provide the theoretical and practical references for the manufacture of remote welding robot and the quality of remote welding.

The Translation of Local Historical Allusions in the Perspective of Cross-cultural Communication With Case Studies

The translation of place-names plays a significant part in both translation and the process of communication. The translation of place-names is a cross-cultural communication, especially in the translation of the place-names with allusion-oriented meaning. The translators should consider the cultural meaning of the place-names and convey the cultural meaning accurately to the foreigners. This paper is based on some cases that have been searched, illustrating the translation of place-names on allusion-oriented from the perspective of cross-cultural communication consciousness and the strategy of foreignization. It also analyzes the basic guiding principl strategies and specific translation methods on the translation of Chinese place-names, as well as the scope es, of various translation methods, such as literal translation, free translation, combination of both of them, and proposes the guiding principles of this kind of translation which should be ＂literal translation-headed, proper free translation, and appropriate interpretation＂. The other principles are ＂following the pronunciation of the owners of proper names, adopting the established popular translated names, and using the standard pronunciation of the Chinese character＂ etc. Based on it, this paper discusses the translation of the place-names, such as ＂Zhenyuan＇

Anger as a Predictor of Active Public Protest： Extended Application of the Situational Theory of Publics to a Health Crisis

This study applies the situational theory of publics （STP） to a health crisis by exploring the effect of anger on public behavior. The results of a survey administered on the case of the candlelight rallies on the U.S. beef imports in South Korea in 2008 demonstrated that involvement, problem recognition, and constraint recognition predicted communication behaviors as well as various issue-related online and offline behaviors. In addition, anger was found to be a significant driving force for publics to perform the behaviors. The segmented publics showed significantly different levels of anger, information processing and seeking, online behaviors, and participation in the candlelight rallies

On Communication through the Cooperative Principle Maxims Flouted and Metaphor——Taking Rage Comic News Events as an Example

Communication is an effect way to transmit the ideas of speaker and listener. For promoting a successful communication, the Cooperative principle is founded. Then some people intentionally violate the rule for some purposes, such as expressing their true meaning in the communication. During this process, they violate those maxims with metaphor to express their ideas,thoughts, and attitudes and so on, which tries to change other people's thoughts. This way is widely used in some programs, and Rage Comic News Events is one of them, which is a good way to form a valid communication to the communicators.

The structure of mixed-species bird flocks,and their response to anthropogenic disturbance,with special reference to East Asia

Mixed-species flocks of birds are distributed world-wide and can be especially dominant in temperate forests during the non-breeding season and in tropical rainforests year-round.We review from a community ecology perspective what is known about the structure and organization of flocks,emphasizing that flocking species tend to be those particularly vulnerable to predation,and flocks tend to be led by species that are able to act as sources of information about predators for other species.Studies on how flocks respond to fragmentation and land-use intensification continue to accumulate,but the question of whether the flock phenomenon makes species more vulnerable to anthropogenic change remains unclear.We review the literature on flocks in East Asia and demonstrate there is a good foundation of knowledge on which to build.We then outline potentially fruitful future directions,focusing on studies that can investigate how dependent species are on each other in flocks,and how such interdependencies might affect avian habitat selection in the different types of human-modified environments of this region.

A Content Analysis of the Image Repair Discourses of OSI Group in China's Food-safety Scandal

Food safety is one of the top issues for Chinese consumers. In the summer of 2014,Shanghai-based Husi Food Co Ltd was mired in a food-safety scandal. OSI Group responded to this situation by releasing statements and holding China press conference. This study focused on OSI Group's image repair strategies employed in the scandal in Chinese context. A content analysis revealed that OSI Group's image repair relied primarily on six strategies: defeasibility( appalled by the event),bolstering( factory in Henan is state-of-art),minimization( it was an isolated event),corrective action( thorough internal investigation),and mortification( sincerely apologized),and attacking the accuser( launched OSI Food Safety Education Campaign). Basically,OSI Group's mortification without compensation doomed its efforts to failure.Implications for implementing image repair strategies with the combination of crisis types are addressed.

Dyad and Triad Census Analysis of Crisis Communication Network

Dyad and triad census summarize much of the network level structural information of a given directed network. They have been found very useful in analyzing structural properties of social networks. This study aims to explore crisis communication network by following dyad and triad census analysis approach to investigate the association of microlevel communication patterns with organizational crisis. This study further tests hypothesis related to the process of data generation and tendency of the structural pattern of transitivity using dyad and triad census output. The changing communication network at Enron Corporation during the period of its crisis is analyzed in this study. Significant differences in the presence of different isomorphism classes or microlevel patterns of both dyad and triad census are noticed in crisis and non-crisis period network of Enron email corpus. It is also noticed that crisis communication network shows more transitivity compared to the non-crisis communication network.

Image Repair Strategies in the Pricey Prawn Scandal of Qingdao

The pricey prawn scandal of Qingdao in the 2015 National Day Holiday,not only violates the principle of integrity management,but also seriously damages the image of Qingdao—World Famous Tourist City.This study applies image repair strategies to Qingdao municipal government departments' attempt to restore its damaged image in crisis communication.Through a discourse analysis,it is found that the government departments mainly adopt the following strategies: denial,evasion of responsibility(defeasibility),reduction of offensiveness(bolstering,compensation),corrective action and mortification.Then we evaluate the effectiveness of this image repair effort.

Ready or Not: Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte and Her Crisis Response Strategy During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Using Situational Crisis Communication Theory(SCCT)by Coombs(2007),this study analyses the case of Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte’s CoViD-19 Crisis and her crisis response strategy to address the situation.The study looks at the crisis communication of Quezon City on issues stemming from the Covid-19 pandemic.The SCCT provides a framework for the organization facing a different complex case of crisis to protect the reputational organization’s assets.The organization’s ability to select the most appropriate and beneficial response helps them deal with an emergency and crisis(Coombs,2007).Simultaneously,in this paper,SCCT was used to examine the stakeholder’s perceptions about the organization’s action and response by Mayor Belmonte on the crisis.This paper concludes Mayor Belmonte did not follow the recommendations of SCCT by combining Deny,such as Attacks the Accuser,Deny and Scapegoat tactics,and Diminish strategies such as Excuse and Justice tactics,to respond to the wide variety of stakeholder’s groups.Mayor Belmonte’s crisis response strategies and tactics do not align with the SCCT.The theory recommends corrective action and response such as Rebuild as well as Bolstering strategies are“considered as the most effective communication of crisis response strategy when an organization perceived a strong attribution of crisis responsibility and results in a severe reputational threat”(Coombs,2007).By reviewing the situation that Mayor Belmonte faced,this paper concludes that she was under severe threat.Mayor Belmonte’s CoViD-19 crisis is the preventable cluster based on the overall stakeholder’s perception of the crisis.The preventable cluster considered her primary,secondary,and additional stakeholders.It depicted an organizational misdeed with and without injuries,and the appropriate responses to adapt to re-establish the organization’s reputation is a Rebuild strategy because interventions such as Compensation and Apology should work to improve the organization’s reputation.Conversely,Mayor Belmonte chose to frequently employ Deny strategy(Attacks the Accuser and Scapegoat)and Diminish strategy(Excuse and Justice)to respond to various stakeholders.
