Its prevalence is increasing at an alarming rate globally. Numerous slimming products crowd the market, with each offering a proprietary formulation with statements of alleged efficacy. Within the EU, one such class is Medical Device, featuring a range of marine- and vegetal-based fibers as the functional ingredient. Methods: An analysis was performed to investigate and compare the lipid binding performance of three medical devices consisting of: 1) a polyglucosamine;2) a vegetal opuntia extract;and 3) a vegetal opuntia extract with vitamins using an industry-standard, validated test method. 0.5 gr of material from each product was studied. Results: The polyglucosamine exhibited a lipid binding capacity (691.7 g/g) more than 20 times the vegetal opuntia extracts. A significantly higher standard deviation (±12.1) was reported for the polyglucosamine medical device vs. the vegetal opuntia extracts (±1.3 - 4.8). However, the standard deviation reported for the former is approximately 1.7% of the mean value obtained from double determination, significantly smaller than that 2.5% - 15% observed for the extracts. Conclusions: Analysis of lipid binding indicated the polyglucosamine exhibited a substantially higher capacity than the vegetal opuntia samples. Further studies are needed to validate these in vitro results.展开更多

In this study, we compared the effects of standardized polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-free closed-system integrated infusion devices with conventional infusion de-vices. Specifically, we assessed the safety, work efficiency, user-friendliness, and cost effec-tiveness of these devices. Compared with con-ventional infusion devices, integrated PVC-free infusion devices were more expensive to pur-chase and dispose, but were safer and more user-friendly and efficient. Although it would be preferable to use standardized infusion devices in all hospital departments, their cost may limit their application to departments that use high-risk treatments, where they would be most beneficial.展开更多

The present paper introduces a combined discrete event simulation (DES)/business process management (BPM) approach as innovative means to study the workflow of the activities within the Department of Laboratory Medicine of the “San Paolo” Hospital in Naples (Italy). After a first “As-Is” analysis to identify the current workflows of the system and to gather information regarding its behaviour, a following DES-based “What-If” analysis is implemented to figure out alternative work hypotheses in order to highlight possible modifications to the system’s response under varying operating conditions and improve its overall performances. The structure of the simulation program is explained and the results of the scenario analysis are discussed. The paper starts with a brief exploration of the use of DES in healthcare and ends with general observations on the subject.展开更多

On some occasions, the patient may come with laboratory investigations that have been requested by the primary physician. This occurs in situations where the primary physician saw the patient first and referred to the surgeon. There is usually no indications based on history or physical examination before these laboratory request is done but rather on speculations that the “anaesthetist may require them”. This is done in order to avoid cancellation or delay of cases. The aim of this study was to find out how tests ordered in Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (K.A.T.H.) by the surgeons affected the decisions of the anaesthetists in the perioperative management of the patients. Methodology: This was a prospective, cross sectional study of patients undergoing elective surgery at K.A.T.H from 1st to 31st March 2014. A quantitative technique was used to effectively quantify laboratory results that were contained in a patient’s folder before an elective surgical procedure. A close and open-ended questionnaire was developed and answered by reviewing patient’s folders during the pre-anesthesia assessment. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SSPS) version 22. Results: The average age of patients studied was 50 years. Abnormal test results did not influence the anaesthetic management in 70.5% of cases but led to either delay or cancelation of cases or requirement for transfusion of blood or blood products in 29.5% of cases. Conclusion: Preoperative laboratory tests ordered by Surgeons in KomfoAnokye Teaching Hospital do not significantly influence the anaesthetic managements of patients.展开更多

However, there is neither a national nor a local strategy to improve the laboratory TAT. The aim of the present study is to develop practical management strategies to shorten clinical laboratory tests’ TAT. This was a qualitative study conducted in Kinshasa. Focus groups and Lean tools were used respectively to generate a wide range of views from a variety of laboratory staff and to eliminate several form of waste in the laboratory flow process. Based on the identified root causes of delay, focus groups participants reported that there is a lot of scope for the improvement of TAT in DRC. Consistent attendance and punctuality are essential. The hospital management should implement the Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and install Middleware. Total laboratory automation, inventory system for all reagents and supplies used in the laboratory, expansion of the sampling area, sufficient number of high-power machine and a clear job description are indispensable. LIS, 3.5 mL BD vacutainer BarricorTM tube and point-of-care testing (POCT) are necessary for workflow improvement. A reduction of 312 minutes was achieved by eliminating or decreasing non-value-added activities. Applying the suggested key strategies, and particularly the new workflow process, is a basis for improving the laboratory tests’ TAT. The algorithm presented can be easily implemented in other laboratories that face this type of problem.展开更多

文摘Passive daytime radiative cooling(PDRC) is useful for thermal management because it allows an object to emit terrestrial heat into space without the use of additional energy. To produce sub-ambient temperatures under direct sunlight,PDRC materials are designed to reduce their absorption of solar energy and to enhance their long-wavelength infrared(LWIR) emissivity. In recent years, many photonic structures and polymer composites have been studied to improve the cooling system of buildings. However,in cold weather(i.e. during winter in cold climates),buildings need to be kept warm rather than cooled due to heat loss.To overcome this limitation,temperature-responsive radiative cooling is a promising alternative. In the present study, adaptive radiative cooling(ARC) film fabricated from a polydimethylsiloxane/hollow SiO_(2) microsphere/thermochromic pigment composite was investigated. We found that the ARC film absorbed solar radiation under cold conditions while exhibiting radiative cooling at ambient temperatures above 40℃.Thus,in outdoor experiments, the ARC film achieved sub-ambient temperatures and had a theoretical cooling power of 63.2 W/m~2 in hot weather. We also demonstrated that radiative cooling with an energy harvesting system could be used to improve the energy management of buildings, with the thermoelectric module continuously generating output power using the ARC film. Therefore,we believe that our proposed ARC film can be employed for efficient thermal management of buildings and all-season energy harvesting in the near future.
文摘Background: Obesity is a significant public health challenge. Further studies are needed to validate these in vitro results.
文摘Since standardization is an important safety measure in healthcare systems, it is essential to systematically assess the effects of introducing new and increasingly complex medical equip-ment, such as infusion devices. Although it would be preferable to use standardized infusion devices in all hospital departments, their cost may limit their application to departments that use high-risk treatments, where they would be most beneficial.
文摘The management systems currently used in the Italian healthcare sector provide fragmented and incomplete information on this system and are generally unlikely to give accurate information on the performances of the healthcare processes. The paper starts with a brief exploration of the use of DES in healthcare and ends with general observations on the subject.
文摘Background: Request for preoperative laboratory investigations is usually done by surgeons. Conclusion: Preoperative laboratory tests ordered by Surgeons in KomfoAnokye Teaching Hospital do not significantly influence the anaesthetic managements of patients.
文摘With the expansion of the scale of our hospital robot laboratory, equipment use, reserves are increasing, manual management equipment information has been unable to adapt to daily management, such as data record error rate increased, the number of experiments increased, equipment loss and maintenance is not clearly defined. In order to ensure the safety and accuracy of the equipment, a system of equipment management systems was developed as a result of the conversion to the use of management systems for the recording and storage of information. The design of this system is a perfect robot laboratory equipment management system based on the development of web framework technology for equipment management functions. The back end of this system uses the Java language, the SSM framework as the main body, the database is built by MySQL relational database, the front-end page uses JSP, Bootstrap, jQuery and other technologies, and uses Eclipse project construction tools for system development. After a period of trial operation, the level of laboratory equipment management has been significantly improved.
文摘In Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the laboratory TAT is significantly very long and do not comply with either international standards or the suggestions of customers. The algorithm presented can be easily implemented in other laboratories that face this type of problem.
