For a Systematic Teaching of Research at the University: Some Avenues for Reflection Informed by the Academic Writing Course

Scientific research aims to understand the reality that surrounds us.It is defined by Benoit Gauthier as:“an activity of objective quest for knowledge on factual questions”.By virtue of its goal of objectively advancing knowledge in a particular field,it requires rigor,precision and method.As heuristic practice is not a natural exercise,the skills required in the development of scientific work need to be taught to students who are often helpless in face of these requirements.It is therefore important for the faculty to support and,even more so,to train students in research.The Faculty of French and Francophone Studies at Beijing Foreign Studies University(BFSU)propose an Academic Writing course accessible to students of the fourth year of the bachelor program.This article first offers a description of the course in its components,both theoretical and practical.Then,it analyses the weaknesses observed by the professor during his teaching and some reflections are proposed in order to try to develop a more systemic approach to research at university aimed at allowing a greater empowerment of the students coupled with more comprehensive training.

An application of Genre-based Teaching Approaches into the teaching of English reading and writing

There are several teaching approaches being used to instruct the reading and writing teaching, such as the product approach, the process approach and the genre approach. In a long period, the product approach and the process approach dominate the field of writing teaching. With the development of genre and genre-analysis theory, we begin to realize that genre-based approach is effective in improving students ’ reading comprehension and writing. Based on the analysis of the theory and on the present situations of college English teaching and personal teaching experience, the genre-based teaching approach is introduced to the writing and reading comprehension teaching.

Teaching Mode Reform of the Electrical Automation Control Course

Under the background of the new era,higher requirements are put forward for colleges and universities to carry out teaching reform.Teachers of electrical automation control courses should update their teaching ideas regularly,innovate teaching methods,and take novel and effective measures to carry out related work.Because electrical automation control courses tend to be technology-oriented,teachers can help students consolidate basic knowledge.They should also focus on developing practical skills so students can easily adapt to future job positions.However,there are many problems in the actual teaching process,which hampers the improvement of the teaching quality to a certain extent.In view of this,this paper presents an in-depth exploration based on theories and practical experiences.It starts with an analysis of the current teaching status of electrical automation control courses in colleges and universities,followed by suggestions to improve them based on their characteristics and students’needs.

Research on the Improvement and Innovation Paths of Teaching Quality in Private Universities in Zhejiang Province in the Digital Era

In the digital era,the education and teaching of private undergraduate universities in China are undergoing innovative reform.This article uses the literature review method to conduct a survey and research on the quality of teaching resources,teaching platforms,and literature reserves,and proposes a series of strategies and innovative paths to improve the teaching quality of private undergraduate universities.The research results show that the rational use of digital technology can improve the quality of education and teaching,and achieve innovative development in education and teaching.The research results have certain theoretical value and guiding significance for the teaching reform of private undergraduate universities under the background of digital teaching.

An Introduction to the Dissemination of Chinese Culture in English Teaching in Colleges and Universities

The Application of Thematic Progression in CET-4 Argumentative Writing Teaching

Based on the theoretical foundation of thematic progression construction, this paper introduces several common patterns of thematic progression and attempts to find applicability of patterns of thematic progression in the teaching of CET-4 argumentative writing from the perspective of discourse so as to show the implication of these patterns for the teaching of college English writing.

An Integrated Model of Teaching Theory and Action Research in POA-based Textbook Writing

Teaching theories provide important guidance for language teaching materials development,but there is little research on how textbook writers apply teaching theories in the actual writing process.This study analyzes the process of compiling iEnglish,a series of textbooks based on the Production-Oriented Approach(POA)and proposes an Integrated Model of Teaching Theory and Action Research for textbook writing.By elaborating the roles of teaching theory and action research at different stages of textbook writing and the interaction between theory and practice during the process,the study concludes that the Integrated Model can promote both textbook improvement and theory refinement.

Anxiety and perception among nurses toward the outbreak of COVID‑19 in University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Akwa Ibom State

Purpose:This study sought to examine the anxiety and perception of nurses toward the outbreak of COVID‑19 in University of Uyo Teaching Hospital(UUTH).Two research questions one hypothesis were used.What is the level of anxiety among nurses toward the outbreak of COVID‑19?What is the perception of nurses toward the outbreak of COVID‑19?The hypothesis states that there is no significant relationship between anxiety and perception of nurses toward the outbreak of COVID‑19.Literature was reviewed based on the research variables.Methods:The research instrument used in collecting the data for the analysis was a questionnaire administered to 100 nurses in UUTH,Uyo.Their responses were analyzed using frequencies,percentages,and Chi‑square analysis,and the following results were obtained.Results:The results indicated that 36(36%)of the respondents strongly agreed that most nurses perceive that poor provision of equipment’s in the hospital result into the transmission of COVID‑19 to another person,35(35%)agreed,20(20%)of the respondents strongly agreed,whereas 9(9%)of the respondents disagreed.Majority of the respondents 56(56%)strongly agreed that nurses sometimes perceive that patients sometimes harbor COVID‑19 without showing the symptoms.Conclusion:The above data,therefore,showed that nurses in UUTH,Uyo,had moderate perception toward COVID‑19.

Teaching Writing Contrastively： Contrastive Rhetoric in the Teaching of Writing

Writing fluently and expressively in English is a necessary skill for communication, as well as a required skill for Chinese students at the tertiary level. Since college students have already been trained on their Chinese writing skills for a considerable length of time and are able to write in Chinese quite successfully, the application of contrastive rhetoric in the teaching of English writing is very effective. This paper explores the possibility of teaching English writing to Chinese students at the tertiary level and proposes an approach to this teaching model.

Perception and attitude of theatre staff to preoperative HIV testing at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital

Objective:To elucidate the awareness and approach to pre-operative human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) testing and emphasis on the attendant components of HIV testing.Methods: The study was conducted at the theatres of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital among 123 nursing,anaesthetic,and operating staff.A descriptive cross sectional design was adopted with stratified sampling.The study instrument was a structured,self administered pro forma.Results:All respondents were all aware of HIV infection and all had transmission through infected blood and tissues(100.0%).88.6%had infection through needle stick injuries, 62.6%through vertical transmission,and 98.4%through blood transfusion.Sixty three percent of respondents correctly knew what preoperative testing was,while 58.5%were aware of the preoperative testing policy of the hospital.All respondents favoured the policy of preoperative testing.Attitudinal values to seropositive patients were not very different as 72.4%of respondents claimed they treated every patient as high risk,and all respondents used personal protective equipment.Conclusions:Routine HIV testing now represents a conventional means providing patients with knowledge of their HIV status.Such testing should be accompanied by informed consent,counselling,confidentiality,protection,and access to treatment.

Incidence of Intestinal Parasites among Food Handlers (Hawkers) around the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Enugu, Enugu State, Nigeria

Incidence of intestinal Parasites has been described as one of the most common problems of developing countries like Nigeria. World Health Organization estimated that 3.5 billion people worldwide are infected with some types of intestinal parasites, and as many as 450 million of them are sick as a result. This work therefore is carried out to access the carrier status of food handlers around the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Enugu in Enugu State of Nigeria as well as to ascertain the common offending parasite. Three hundred and six (306) stool samples were randomly collected between January and August, 2001 from food vendors occupying the zones around the Teaching Hospital which include: UNTH Road, Railway track, Prison old park and Dean’s cook. The samples were transported to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Parasitology Laboratory within 1 hour of production and analysed Parasitologically using Physiological saline and iodine direct mount and formal ether concentration techniques. Out of the 306 stool samples analysed, 126 representing 41.2% tested positive to parasites. Entamobe histolytica showed the highest incidence of 52.4% followed by Ascaris lumbricoidis with 23.8% and the least was Tricharis trichura with 40%. The incidence of mixed infection was 44.4%. Female food handlers were more infected 44.2% than the male food handlers 36.8%. Whereas Meat handlers were most infected 66.7% among other food handlers. From the result of the work, it can be inferredthat the incidence of intestinal parasites among food handlers around the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Enugu is high and this can be attributed mainly to poor sanitary condition of this area. We therefore recommend that Enugu State Government should intensify her sanitation programme especially where public foods are being handled, as well as provide enlightenment campaign for food handlers to save the lives of her citizenry.

Management of Secondary Leyll Syndrome Due to Anti-Covid Vaccine in a Case, at the Renaissance University Teaching Hospital, Ndjamena (CHAD)

Introduction: Lyell’s syndrome (SL), called Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis is one of the most serious forms of medication accidents. It is an acute, rare pathology, its incidence is estimated at 1 to 2 cases out of one million inhabitants per year and its evolution can be fatal. Materials and Methods: We report the observation of a 60-year-old patient, with no significant pathological history, admitted to our intensive care unit at the Renaissance University Teaching Hospital in N’Djamena for the treatment of Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis. In whom the onset of symptoms dates back to few hours after vaccination against COVID-19 with Ag Johnson and Johnson. Results: An ophthalmology opinion was requested and the patient was put on Fucithalmic. In our case, in addition to the advanced age of the patient (60 years old), her SCORTEN was ≥5. Conclusion: The late management as well as the absence of a specific department for severe burns, which condition the presence of a technical plate was fatal to her despite multidisciplinary care: Resuscitators, Traumato-Orthopedist and ophthalmologist.

Vale do Acaraú State University (UVA) in Northeast of Brasil: Thinking Teaching, Research and Extension on the Occasion of Its Fiftieth Anniversary

The article attempts to explain part of a study that we are developing in the research titled: Higher Education andUrban and Regional Development: expressions of Public State Universities in Ceará. For the purpose of this articlewe focus on the Teaching-Research-Extension tripod in the Vale do Acaraú State University (UVA), in 2018, yearthat UVA celebrates its fiftieh anniversary. Research occured through questionnaires sent to the graduates viaUVA’s academic system, created by the Information Technology Center (NTI). The questionnare solicited answersfrom 1785 graduates;Research also included an interview with the Dean of Administration, office of 2014-2022 aswell as data and institutional documents analysis from the university’s webpage and data collection in severalpro-rectory offices in the University. Besides its contradictions in the consolidation process, UVA plays a relevantrole in the expansion of Public Higher Education outside the capital of the brazilian Northeast region, especially inCeará, where the Federal University took fifty years to establish a campus outside the state capital. The Institution’spioneering spirit helped to reassure the prominent regional role of the city of Sobral in Ceará’s urban network,capturing a daily flow of students from over 55 counties.

The Enlightenment of Metaphors in Titles on English Writing Teaching

Based on non-English majors＇ textbooks, this paper discusses the functions of metaphors in titles of texts and places a major emphasis on enlightenment of metaphors in titles on English writing teaching. And through analyzing metaphors in titles, it is suggested that in daily writing teaching, teachers should bear the cultivation of students＇ metaphorical thinking from analyzing titles in mind; teachers also design some writing tasks with metaphors in titles and select textbooks with metaphor-rich texts
