The thermal fatigue behavior of K465 superalloy was investigated at the peak temperature of 1050℃. By scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy, the main crack length was observed and measured. The initiation sites of the tested alloys are different in as-cast (named as K465) and solution heat treatment (named as SK465) conditions. In K465 alloy, most thermal fatigue cracks nucleate at (Nb,W,Ti)C carbides. In SK465 alloy, thermal fatigue cracks initiate in interdendritic regions, MC-type carbides and some interfaces. Thermal fatigue cracks propagate in transdendritic mode, and M6C-type carbides could retard thermal fatigue crack growth for SK465 superalloy. 展开更多

Influences of rare earth (RE) elements addition on thermal fatigue behaviors of AZ91 alloy were studied. Repeated heating and cooling cycles were applied on the samples at 170 and 210℃ to develop thermal fatigue cracks. Crack growth mechanisms and microstructural influences were investigated by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as well as energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Thermal fatigue behaviors were observed to improve successively by addition of the RE up to 2wt.%. This improvement was attributed to the consummation of aluminum in melt by precipitation of the needle shaped AII1RE3 phases. This process was attributed to the reduction of MglTAl12 phase volume fraction and consequent decrease of the brittle Mg/MglTAl12 interface which was the main reason for weak thermal properties of the alloy at rather high temperatures. Further additions of RE, however, reduced the thermal shock resistance of the samples by increasing the mean length of the brittle needle shaped phases. 展开更多

The formation and growth of thermal fatigue crack in chromium wear resistant cast iron was investigated, and the effect of hot deformation on the crack was analyzed by means of optical microscope and scanning electron microscope and high frequency induction thermal fatigue tester. The results show that eutectic carbide is the main location and passage for initiation and extension of thermal fatigue cracks, hot deformation can improve the eutectic carbiders morphology and distribution, inhibit the generation and propagation of thermal fatigue cracks. In the experiment, the propagation rate of thermal fatigue crack reduces with the quantity of hot deformation increasing, which was analyzed in the point view of the activation energy of crack propagation. 展开更多

High-temperature mechanical properties of high-boron austenitic steels(HBASs) were studied at 850 °C using a dynamic thermal-mechanical simulation testing machine. In addition, the thermal fatigue properties of the alloys were investigated using the self-restraint Uddeholm thermal fatigue test, during which the alloy specimens were cycled between room temperature and 800°C. Stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the surface cracks and cross-sectional microstructure of the alloy specimens after the thermal fatigue tests. The effects of carbon content on the mechanical properties at room temperature and high-temperature as well as thermal fatigue properties of the HBASs were also studied. The experimental results show that increasing carbon content induces changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties of the HBASs. The boride phase within the HBAS matrix exhibits a round and smooth morphology, and they are distributed in a discrete manner. The hardness of the alloys increases from 239(0.19 wt.% C) to 302(0.29 wt.% C) and 312 HV(0.37 wt.% C); the tensile yield strength at 850 °C increases from 165.1 to 190.3 and 197.1 MPa; and the compressive yield strength increases from 166.1 to 167.9 and 184.4 MPa. The results of the thermal fatigue tests(performed for 300 cycles from room temperature to 800 °C) indicate that the degree of thermal fatigue of the HBAS with 0.29 wt.% C(rating of 2–3) is superior to those of the alloys with 0.19 wt.%(rating of 4–5) and 0.37 wt.%(rating of 3–4) carbon. The main cause of this difference is the ready precipitation of M23(C,B)6-type borocarbides in the alloys with high carbon content during thermal fatigue testing. The precipitation and aggregation of borocarbide particles at the grain boundaries result in the deterioration of the thermal fatigue properties of the alloys. 展开更多

Thermal fatigue performance of copper/stainless steel explosive welding joint was investigated by using a highly effective thermal fatigue test device. The testing device adopted induction coil to heat and carry out two groups of thermal fatigue test at the same time. Metallurgical microscope and scanning electron microscope were used to respectively measure the surface crack and cross-section crack propagation morphology of the explosive welding joint specimen that were conducted thermal cycling for different upper limit temperatures and different cycle time.Experimental results indicated that the cyclic thermal stress and oxidation corrosion was the major factors for fatigue damage behavior of explosive welding joints, where the oxidation corrosion of the interface has become more serious with the increasing the upper limit temperature or the number of cycles rising. Thermal fatigue cracks initiation was mainly beginning from the wavy interface between copper and stainless steel, the vortex-like cast microstructure formed by explosive welding can prevent the crack from propagating along the interface edge and change the direction of crack propagation. The initiation and expansionof thermal fatigue cracks were observed in the copper matrix. 展开更多

Biomimetic surface is an effective ways to promote the performance grade and applied range of materials without alteringtheir substrate. Many improved properties such as resisting fatigue, enduring wear, etc, have been achieved by applyingbiomimetic morphology or structure to some engineering material surfaces. In this paper, aiming to reveal the relationshipbetween thermal cracking behavior and mechanical properties of engineering materials with biomimetic surface, biomimeticspecimens were fabricated using laser technique by imitating the heterogeneous structure on the surface of plant leaves.Theeffect of thermal fatigue cycling on the tensile properties of H13 die steel specimens with different surfaces (several types ofbiomimetic surfaces and a smooth surface) was compared and investigated. As a result, due to the coupling effects of themorphological features on the surface and the microstructure characteristics within unit zone, these specimens with biomimeticsurface exhibit remarkably enhanced Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) and 0.2% Yield Strength (YS) compared with referencespecimens while corresponding ductility remains largely unaffected even heightened, whether the thermal fatigue loads or not.The relative mechanisms leading to these improvements have been discussed. 展开更多

Thermal fatigue checking is the general failure of hot work die steels, which is relative with the structures and properties of the steels and the stress alternated during the employment. The Uddeholm test method on thermal fatigue is used to compare the behaviors of different samples, which are treated with plasma nitriding、plasma sulfur carbon nitriding、boronizing or not treated. The results show that the nitriding improves the thermal fatigue property of the tool steel, while the plasma sulfur carbon nitriding and the boronizing impair the property. The mechanisms are induced as follows. By increasing the hardness and changing the stress distribution in the surface layer, surface treatment can decrease the plastic deformation and the tensile stress during the cycling. Therefore, the generation and growth of the cracks are restrained. On the other hand, as results of surface treating, in the surface layer the toughness declines and the expanding coefficient ascendes; the latter change caused the strengthening of the tensile and compressive stress during the cycling. Thus the resistance to thermal fatigue is weakened. Whether or not the surface treatment is favor to thermal fatigue of tool steels relies on which factor is dominant. 展开更多

Specimens with V-type notch were tested at the peak temperatures of 900, 1000, and 1100℃. The crack growth curves as a function of the number of cycles were plotted. With the increase of peak temperature, the crack initiation life was shortened dramatically. Through optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation, it was found that multiple small cracks nucleated at the notch tip region but only one or two of them continued to develop in the following thermal cycles. The primary cracks generally propagated along a preferential direction. Microstructure changes after thermal fatigue were also discussed on the basis of SEM observation. 展开更多

AISI H13 hot work tool steel is widely used for hot forging, hot-extrusion and die-casting because of its high temperature strength, impact toughness, heat checking resistance and wear resistance, etc. The thermally induced surface damage, i. e., thermal fatigne,is believed to be controlled by the magnitude of the imposed cyclic strain. The thermal fatigue on the surface of hot working die, which is responsible to the initiation of the cracks, is reported to result in more than 80 % of the failure of dies. 展开更多

The in-phase and out-of-phase thermal fatigue, the C-P type and P-C type isothermal fa- tigue of grey cast iron were experimentally studied. The fatigue life was evaluated analytically by using the elastic-plastic fracture mechanics method(mainly J integral). The results of ex- periments and calculations showed that the lifes of in-phase and C-P type fatigue are longer than that of out-of-phase and P-C type fatigue respectively within the same strain range. This is in contrast to the results of other materials such as low carbon steel. On the other hand, the predicted lifes are consistent with experimental results. This suggests that J integral as a mechanics parameter for characterizing the thermal fatigue strength of grey cast iron and the mechanics model and the calculation method developed here are efficient.A parameter ΔW_1 was proposed from energy aspect to characterize the capacity of crack propagation. The isothermal fatigue life is the same as the thermal fatigue life for identical ΔW_1 values. 展开更多

The thermal fatigue behavior of Ni3Al based superalloy IC6E during the cycles between 900 ℃/1 000 ℃ and the room tempera- ture was investigated. The experimental results indicate that the primary and secondary thermal fatigue cracks initiate inside or round the borides and then spread away along grain boundaries and/or in interdendritic areas. The fracture of borides and their separation from the matrix at interfaces are mainly responsible for the crack initiation and its spreading. At temperatures higher than 1 000 ℃, the grain boundary oxidation combined with cyclic stresses accelerates the crack growth. 展开更多

Results show that thermal fatigue behavior is associated with cyclic upper temperature and coating thickness. As the thickness of the coating decreases, the thermal fatigue resistance increases. The thermal fatigue resistance cuts down with the thermal cyclic upper temperature rising. The crack growth rate decreases with the increase in cyclic number until crack arrests. The thermal fatigue behaviour and microstructure in a directionally solidified DZ38G alloy has been investigated. It was found that DZ28G alloy has larger thermal fatigue resistance than that of original M38G alloy because of the elimination of the transverse grain boundaries and the small elastic modulus.Detailed observation shows that microcrack is initiated at the grain boundaries or the phase interfaces and propagates along interdendrites, grain boundaries and, sometimes, along the defined crystallographic direction and that the amount of carbides at grain boundaries increases and the morphology of phase becomes irregular after thermal fa- tigue test. The initiation and propagation of thermal fatigue cracks in gray cast iron and vemicular graphite cast iron were investigated by Uddeholm method to reveal the complex thermal fatigue behaviors of cast iron.Differences of thermal fatigue behaviors of gray cast iron and vemicular graphite cast iron were observed and analyzed. It is found that the observed differences are related to the combination of graphite morphology and the oxidization of matrix.More oxidized matrix is observed in gray cast iron due to its large specific surface area. The brittle oxidized matrix facilitates the propagation of microcracks along the oxidization layer.By contrast, the radial microcracks are formed in vermicular graphite at the edge of graphite due to fewer oxidization layers. It indicates that the thermal fatigue resistance of gray cast iron is dominated by graphite content and morphology while that of vermicular graphite cast iron strongly relates to the strength of the matrix. 展开更多
