Background High environmental temperatures induce heat stress in broiler chickens, affecting their health and pro-duction performance.Several dietary, managerial, and genetics strategies have been tested with some success in mitigating heat stress(HS)in broilers.Developing novel HS mitigation strategies for sustaining broiler production is critically needed. This study investigated the effects of pre-hatch thermal manipulation(TM)and post-hatch baica-lein supplementation on growth performance and health parameters in heat-stressed broilers. Results Six hundred fertile Cobb 500 eggs were incubated for 21 d.After candling on embryonic day(ED)10,238 eggs were thermally manipulated at 38.5℃ with 55%relative humidity(RH)from ED 12 to 18,then transferred to the hatcher(ED 19 to 21,standard temperature)and 236 eggs were incubated at a controlled temperature(37.5℃)till hatch. After hatch,180-day-old chicks from both groups were raised in 36 pens(n=10 birds/pen,6 replicates per treatment). The treatments were:1)Control,2)TM,3)control heat stress(CHS),4)thermal manipulation heat stress(TMHS),5)control heat stress supplement(CHSS),and 6)thermal manipulation heat stress supplement(TMHSS).All birds were raised under the standard environment for 21 d,followed by chronic heat stress from d 22 to 35(32–33℃ for 8 h)in the CHS,TMHS,CHSS,and TMHSS groups.A thermoneutral(22–24℃)environment was maintained in the Control and TM groups.RH was constant(50%±5%)throughout the trial. All the data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA in R and GraphPad software at P<0.05 and are presented as mean±SEM.Heat stress significantly decreased(P<0.05)the final body weight and ADG in CHS and TMHS groups compared to the other groups.Embryonic TM significantly increased(P<0.05)the expression of heat shock protein-related genes(HSP70,HSP90,and HSPH1)and antioxidant-related genes(GPX1 and TXN).TMHS birds showed a significant increment(P<0.05)in total cecal volatile fatty acid(VFA)concentration compared to the CHS birds. The cecal microbial analysis showed significant enrichment(P<0.05)in alpha and beta diversity and Coprococcus in the TMHSS group. Conclusions Pre-hatch TM and post-hatch baicalein supplementation in heat-stressed birds mitigate the detrimental effects of heat stress on chickens’growth performance, upregulate favorable gene expression, increase VFA produc-tion,and promote gut health by increasing beneficial microbial communities. 展开更多

Drought poses a significant challenge, restricting the productivity of medicinal and aromatic plants. The strain induced by drought can impede vital processes like respiration and photosynthesis, affecting various aspects of plants’growth and metabolism. In response to this adversity, medicinal plants employ mechanisms such as morphological and structural adjustments, modulation of drought-resistant genes, and augmented synthesis of secondary metabolites and osmotic regulatory substances to alleviate the stress.Extreme water scarcity can lead to leaf wilting and may ultimately result in plant death. The cultivation and management of medicinal plants under stress conditions often differ from those of other crops. This is because the main goal with medicinal plants is not only to increase the yield of the above-ground parts but also to enhance the production of active ingredients such as essential oils.To elucidate these mechanisms of drought resistance in medicinal and aromatic plants, the current review provides a summary of recent literature encompassing studies on the morphology, physiology, and biochemistry of medicinal and aromatic plants under drought conditions. 展开更多

In the design realm of fusion power supplies, structural components play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of fusion devices. To verify the reliability of the converter structure design at the Comprehensive Research Facility for Fusion Technology(CRAFT),meticulous analysis of the converter's dynamic impact is carefully performed based on the worst fault current(400k A),firstly.Subsequently, the thermal stress analysis based on the maximum allowable steadystate temperature is finished, and the equivalent thermal stress, thermal deformation, maximum shear stress of a single bridge arm and the whole converter are studied.Furthermore,a simple research method involving the current-sharing characteristics of a bridge arm with multithyristor parallel connection is proposed using a combination of Simplorer with Q3D in ANSYS.The results show that the current-sharing characteristics are excellent. Finally, the structural design has been meticulously tailored to meet the established requirements. 展开更多

A study of the interfacial behavior and internal thermal stress distribution in fiber-reinforced composites is essential to assess their performance and reliability.CNT/carbon fiber(CF)hybrid fibers were constructed using electrophoretic deposition. The interfacial properties of CF/epoxy and CNT/CF/epoxy composites were statistically investigated and compared using in-situ thermal Raman mapping by dispersing CNTs as a Raman sensing medium(CNT_(R))in a resin. The associated local thermal stress changes can be simulated by capturing the G'band position distribution of CNT_(R) in the epoxy at different temperatures. It was found that the G'band shifted to lower positions with increasing temperature, reaching a maximum difference of 2.43 cm^(−1) at 100℃.The interfacial bonding between CNT/CF and the matrix and the stress distribution and changes during heat treatment(20-100℃)were investig-ated in detail. This work is important for studying thermal stress in fiber-reinforced composites by in-situ thermal Raman mapping technology. 展开更多

Thermal stress causes the overproduction and toxic accumulation of reactive oxygen species(ROS),which seems to be correlated with coral bleaching and, ultimately, death. The reduction of ROS concentration within the coral holobiont could minimize the effects of thermal stress and support efforts to reduce coral decline globally. In the current study,we explored the physiological responses of Pocillopora damicornis to ROS-scavenging bacteria inoculation as well as the microbiome restructuring that correlates with P.damicornis’s resilience to thermal stress after probiotic inoculation.Inoculation of corals with ROS-scavenging bacteria enhanced coral health and reduced ROS concentration.Furthermore, the enhanced coral thermal resistance promoted by ROS-scavenging bacteria was also correlated with an overall coral microbiome restructuring. In addition, the complex network relationships between bacteria and Symbiodiniaceae in corals after ROS-scavenging bacteria inoculation contributed to corals’resilience to high temperatures.Besides, coral heat tolerance bacterial biomarkers, such as Myxococcota, were enriched in corals with added ROS-scavenging bacteria.Collectively, our findings validate the selected ROS-scavenging bacteria as coral probiotics that could help corals resist thermal stress on a short timescale.Additionally, our data contribute to our understanding of the potential interactions between different members of the coral holobiont and the use of probiotics as tools to aid coral restoration efforts. 展开更多

Testing of large-sized specimens is becoming increasingly important in deep underground rock mechanics and engineering. In traditional mechanical loading, stresses on large-sized specimens are achieved by large host frames and hydraulic pumps, which could lead to great investment.Low-cost testing machines clearly always have great appeal. In this study,a new approach is proposed using thermal expansion stress to load rock specimens, which may be particularly suitable for tests of deep hot dry rock with high temperatures. This is a different technical route from traditional mechanical loading through hydraulic pressure. For the rock mechanics test system of hot dry rock that already has an investment in heating systems, this technology may reduce the cost of the loading subsystem by fully utilizing the temperature changes. This paper presents the basic principle and a typical design of this technical solution.Preliminary feasibility analysis is then conducted based on numerical simulations.Although some technical details still need to be resolved, the feasibility of this loading approach has been preliminarily confirmed. 展开更多

Background:Although thermal indices have been proposed for swine, none to our knowledge differentiate by reproductive stage or predict thermal comfort using behavioral and physiological data. The study objective was to develop a behavior and physiology-based decision support tool to predict thermal comfort and stress in multiparous(3.28±0.81)non-pregnant(n=11),mid-gestation(n=13),and late-gestation(n=12)sows.Results:Regression analyses were performed using PROC MIXED in SAS 9.4 to determine the optimal environmental indicator[dry bulb temperature(TDB)and dew point]of heat stress(HS)in non-pregnant,mid-gestation,and lategestation sows with respiration rate(RR)and body temperature(TB)successively used as the dependent variable in a cubic function.A linear relationship was observed for skin temperature(T_(S))indicating that TDB rather than the sow HS response impacted T_(S)and so T_(S)was excluded from further analyses.Reproductive stage was significant for all analyses(P<0.05).Heat stress thresholds for each reproductive stage were calculated using the inflections points of RR for mild HS and TB for moderate and severe HS.Mild HS inflection points differed for non-pregnant,mid-gestation,and late gestation sows and occurred at 25.5,25.1,and 24.0℃,respectively.Moderate HS inflection points differed for non-pregnant,mid-gestation,and late gestation sows and occurred at 28.1,27.8,and 25.5℃,respectively.Severe HS inflection points were similar for non-pregnant and mid-gestation sows(32.9℃)but differed for late-gestation sows(30.8℃).These data were integrated with previously collected behavioral thermal preference data to estimate the TDB that non-pregnant,mid-gestation,and late-gestation sows found to be cool(TDB<TDB preference range),comfortable(TDB=TDB preference range),and warm(TDB preference range<TDB<mild HS).Conclusions:The results of this study provide valuable information about thermal comfort and thermal stress thresholds in sows at three reproductive stages. The development of a behavior and physiology-based decision support tool to predict thermal comfort and stress in non-pregnant,mid-gestation,and late-gestation sows is expected to provide swine producers with a more accurate means of managing sow environments. 展开更多

Arbuscular mycorrhizal(AM)fungi distribute widely in natural habits and play a variety of ecological functions. In order to test the physiological response to salt stress mediated by different AM fungi,Viola prionantha was selected as the host, the dominant AM fungus in the rhizosphere of V.philippica growing in Songnen saline-alkali grassland,Rhizophagus irregularis, and their mixtures were used as inoculants, and NaCl stress was applied after the roots were colonized. The results showed that V.philippica could be colonized by AM fungi in the field and the colonization rate ranged from 73.33%to 96.67%,and Claroideoglomus etunicatum was identified as the dominant AM fungi species in the rhizosphere of V.philippica by morphology combined with sequencing for AM fungal AML1/AML2 target.Inoculation with both the species resulted in the formation of mycorrhizal symbiosis(the colonization rate was more than 70%)and AM fungi significantly enhanced plants’tolerance to salt stress of varying magnitude.Higher activity of antioxidant enzymes and augmented levels of proline and other osmoregulators were observed in AM plants. The content of MDA in CK was higher than that in the inoculations with the stress of 100,200,and 250 mM.All indices except soluble protein content and MDA content were significantly correlated with AM fungal colonization indices. The analysis for different AM fungal effects showed that the mixtures and R.irregularis worked even better than C.etunicatum.These results will provide theoretical support for the exploration and screening of salt-tolerant AM fungi species and also for the application of AM-ornamental plants in saline-alkali urban greening. 展开更多

K439B nickel-based superalloy is a new type of high-temperature material. There is insufficient research on its constitutive equations and numerical modeling of thermal stress.Isothermal tensile experiments of K439B superalloy at different temperatures(20°C-1,000°C)and strain rates(1.33×10^(-3)s^(-1)-5.33×10^(-3)s^(-1))were performed by using a Gleeble-3800 simulator. The elastic moduli at different temperatures(20°C-650°C)were measured by resonance method.Subsequently,stress-strain curves were measured for K439B superalloy under different conditions. The elastic-viscoplastic constitutive equations were established and the correspongding parameters were solved by employing the Perzyna model. The verification results indicate that the calculated values of the constitutive equations are in good agreement with the experimental values. On this basis, the influence of process parameters on thermal stress was investigated by numerical simulation and orthogonal experimental design. The results of orthogonal experimental design reveal that the cooling mode of casting has a significant influence on the thermal stress, while pouring temperature and preheating temperature of shell mold have minimal impact. The distribution of physical fields under optimal process parameters, determined based on the orthogonal experimental design results, was simulated. The simulation results determine separately the specific positions with maximum values for effective stress, plastic strain, and displacement within the casting. The maximum stress is about 1,000.0 MPa,the plastic strain is about 0.135,and the displacement is about 1.47 mm.Moreover, the distribution states of thermal stress, strain, and displacement are closely related to the distribution of the temperature gradient and cooling rate in the casting. The research would provide a theoretical reference for exploring the stress-strain behavior and numerical modeling of the effective stress of the alloy during the casting process. 展开更多

Dry storage containers must be secured and reliable during long-term storage, and the effect of decay heat released from the internal spent fuel on the cask has become an important research topic. In this paper,a 3D computational fluid dynamics model is presented, and the accuracy of the calculation is verified, with computational errors of less than 6.2%.The thermal stress of the dry storage cask was estimated by coupling it with a transient temperature field. The total power remained constant and adjusting the power ratio of the inner and outer zones had a small effect on the stress results, with a maximum equivalent stress of approximately 5.2 kPa,which occurred at the lower edge of the shell. In the case of tilt, the temperature gradient varied in a wavy distribution, and the wave crest moved from right to left.Altering the tilt angle affects the air distribution in the annular gap, leading to the shell temperature being transformed, with a maximum equivalent stress of 202 MPa at the bottom of the shell. However, the equivalent stress in both cases was less than the yield stress(205 MPa). 展开更多

Ocean warming is altering the habitats of marine invertebrates, which has resulted in an increased physiological stress to marine molluscs, especially those intertidal bivalves, such as the ark shell Scapharca broughtonii. We investigated the physiological and transcriptional responses of ark shells to acute and chronic thermal stress results showed that at 33℃,a significantly higher cumulative mortality(55.7%)occurred under acute thermal stress than chronic thermal stress. The apoptosis rate of hemocytes was sustained at higher levels and the necrosis rate was increased significantly in a time-dependent manner under acute thermal stress. However, under chronic thermal stress, the apoptosis and necrosis rates exhibited similar change trends:a rapid increase followed by a gradual decline and sustained at a relatively high level until the end of the experiment. The expressions of heat shock protein genes(HSP20 and HSP90),apoptosis-related genes(TRAF6,GRP78,NIX,and Casp-3),antioxidative-related genes(GST and MRP)and cellular detoxification-related genes(HbⅡB,NOS-1,HO-1,and ENO-1)were upregulated significantly under both acute and chronic thermal stresses. These results demonstrated that the anti-apoptotic system, antioxidant defense system, cellular detoxification system, and heat shock proteins(HSPs)played vital roles for ark shells in response to thermal stress. As acute thermal stress can result in irreversible damage to marine molluscs,it is thus advised that chronic thermal stress should be used to select thermal-resistant ark shell strains. 展开更多

The development of thermal stress in the exhaust manifold of a gasoline engine is considered. The problem is addresses in the frame of a combined approach wherefluid and structure are coupled using the GT-POWER and STAR-CCM+software.First,the external characteristic curve of the engine is compared with a one-dimen-sional simulation model, then the parameters of the model are modified until the curve matches the available experimental values.GT-POWER is then used to transfer the inlet boundary data under transient conditions to STAR-CCM+in real-time.The temperature profiles of the inner and outer walls of the exhaust manifold are obtained in this way, together with the thermal stress and thermal deformation of the exhaust manifold itself.Using this information, the original model is improved through the addition of connections. Moreover, the local branch pipes are optimized, leading to significant improvements in terms of thermal stress and thermal deforma-tion of the exhaust manifold(a 7%reduction in the maximum thermal stress). 展开更多

Cadmium(Cd) pollution has emerged as a critical global environmental concern, due to its significant toxicity, environmental persistence, and the pervasiveness of contamination. Significantly, the bioaccumulation of Cd in agricultural crops constitutes a primary vector for its entry into the human diet. This issue warrants urgent attention from both the scientific community and policymakers to develop and implement effective mitigation strategies. This review delves into the physiological impacts of Cd stress on plants, including the suppression of photosynthetic activity, amplification of oxidative stress, and disruptions in mineral nutrient homeostasis. Additionally, the resistance mechanisms deployed by plants in response to Cd stress have been explored, and the prospective contributions of molecular breeding strategies in augmenting crop tolerance to Cd and minimizing its bioaccumulation have been assessed. By integrating and analyzing these findings, we seek to inform future research trajectories and proffer strategic approaches to enhance agricultural sustainability, safeguard human health, and protect environmental integrity. 展开更多

Drought(water shortage)can substantially limit the yield and economic value of rose plants(Rosa spp.).Here,we characterized the effect of exogenous calcium(Ca^(2+))on the antioxidant system and photosynthesis-related properties of rose under polyethylene glycol 6000(PEG6000)-induced drought stress.Chlorophyll levels,as well as leaf and root biomass, were significantly reduced by drought;drought also had a major effect on the enzymatic antioxidant system and increased concentrations of reactive oxygen species.Application of exogenous Ca^(2+)increased the net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance of leaves, enhanced water-use efficiency, and increased the length and width of stomata following exposure to drought.Organ-specific physiological responses were observed under different concentrations of Ca^(2+).Application of 5 mmol·L^(-1)Ca^(2+)promoted photosynthesis and antioxidant activity in the leaves, and application of 10 mmol·L^(-1)Ca^(2+)promoted antioxidant activity in the roots.Application of exogenous Ca^(2+)greatly enhanced the phenotype and photosynthetic capacity of potted rose plants following exposure to drought stress.Overall, our findings indicate that the application of exogenous Ca^(2+)enhances the drought resistance of roses by promoting physiological adaptation and that it could be used to aid the cultivation of rose plants. 展开更多

The objective of this study was to explain the physiological mechanisms through which Na_(2)SeO_(3) mitigates the growth and developmental inhibition of pakchoi under HgCl_(2)stress.The results showed that treatment with HgCl_(2)(40 mg L^(−1))led to reduced biomass, dwarfing, root shortening, and root tip necrosis in pakchoi.Compared to control(CK),the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD)and peroxidase(POD)in Hg treatment increased, and the content of malondialdehyde(MDA)also dramatically increased, which negatively impacted the growth of pakchoi.Low concentrations of Na_(2)SeO_(3)(0.2 mg L^(−1))significantly increased the content of soluble sugars compared with control, while chlorophyll, soluble proteins, free amino acids, and vitamin C had no significant changes. The results of the mixed treatments with HgCl_(2)and Na_(2)SeO_(3) suggested that selenium may be able to reduce the toxicity of mercury in pakchoi. The biomass, plant height, root length, chlorophyll content, soluble protein, other physiological indicators, and proline showed significant increases compared with the HgCl_(2)treatment.Additionally,the MDA content and mercury accumulation in pakchoi decreased. Our results revealed the antagonistic effects of selenium and mercury in pakchoi. Thus,a theoretical basis for studying pakchoi’s mercuryexcreted and selenium-rich cultivation technology was provided. 展开更多

In order to explore the response mechanism of Passiflora edulis Sims to drought stress, the changes in morpho-logical and physiological traits of Passiflora edulis Sims under different drought conditions were studied.A total of 7 germplasm resources of Passiflora edulis Sims were selected and tested under drought stress by the pot culture method under 4 treatment levels:75%–80%(Control,CK)of maximumfield water capacity,55%–60%(Light Drought,LD)of maximumfield water capacity,i.e.,mild drought,40%–45%(Moderate Drought,MD)of max-imumfield water capacity,i.e.,moderate drought and 30%–35%(Severe Drought,SD)of maximumfield water capacity,i.e.,severe drought. On the 40th day of drought treatment,13 indices, including seedling growth mor-phology,physiology,and biochemistry, were measured. The results showed that under drought stress, the height and ground diameter of P.edulis Sims gradually decreased with increasing drought stress, and there were signifi-cant differences in seedling height and ground diameter among the treatments.Drought stress significantly inhib-ited the growth of seven P.edulis Sims varieties. The contents of soluble sugar(SS),soluble protein(SP),proline(Pro),and other substances in P.edulis Sims basically increased with increasing drought stress. With the aggrava-tion of drought stress, the malondialdehyde(MDA)content of P.edulis Sims tended to increase to different degrees, the superoxide dismutase(SOD)activity and peroxidase(POD)activity both tended to increase atfirst and then decrease, and the change in catalase(CAT)activity mostly showed a gradual increasing trend. The con-tents of endogenous hormones in P.edulis Sims significantly differed under different degrees of drought stress. With the aggravation of drought stress, the abscisic acid(ABA)content of P.edulis Sims tended to increase, whereas the contents of gibberellin(GA),indoleacetic acid(IAA),and zeatin nucleoside(ZR)exhibited a down-ward trend.A comprehensive evaluation of the drought resistance of seven P.edulis Sims varieties was conducted based on the principal component analysis method, and the results showed that the drought resistance decreased in the order XH-BL>XH-TWZ>TN1>GH1>ZJ-MT>LP-LZ>DH-JW. 展开更多

Enhancing the lifetime of perovskite solar cells(PSCs)is one of the essential challenges for their industrialization.Although the external encapsulation protects the perovskite device from the erosion of moisture and oxygen under various harsh conditions. However, the perovskite devices still undergo static and dynamic thermal stress during thermal and thermal cycling aging, respectively, resulting in irreversible damage to the morphology, component, and phase of stacked materials.Herein, the viscoelastic polymer polyvinyl butyral(PVB)material is designed onto the surface of perovskite films to form flexible interface encapsulation. After PVB interface encapsulation, the surface modulus of perovskite films decreases by nearly 50%,and the interface stress range under the dynamic temperature field(−40 to 85°C)drops from−42.5 to 64.8 MPa to−14.8 to 5.0 MPa.Besides,PVB forms chemical interactions with FA+cations and Pb^(2+),and the macroscopic residual stress is regulated and defects are reduced of the PVB encapsulated perovskite film.As a result, the optimized device's efficiency increases from 22.21%to 23.11%.Additionally,after 1500 h of thermal treatment(85°C),1000 h of damp heat test(85°C&85%RH),and 250 cycles of thermal cycling test(−40 to 85°C),the devices maintain 92.6%,85.8%,and 96.1%of their initial efficiencies, respectively. 展开更多

In this paper, the detailed analysis of the influence of thermal and non-Newtonian aspects of lubricant(couple stress fluid)on EHL line contact as a function of slide-roll ratio is presented. The novel low complexity FAS(full approximation scheme),of the multigrid scheme, with Jacobi dipole and Gauss Seidel relaxation is used for the solution of coupled equations viz.modified Reynolds equation, film thickness equation and energy equation satisfying appropriate boundary conditions. The analysis reveals the combined influence of non-Newtonian,thermal and slide-roll ratio(of bearing moving with different speeds)on pressure, film thickness and pressure spike covering a wide range of physical parameters of interest. Results show that pressure spike is strongly influenced by thermal,slide-roll ratio and non-Newtonian character of lubricant with negligible effect on the overall pressure distribution. Also, the minimum film thickness is slightly altered and it increases with the increase in the couple stress parameter. These findings confirm the importance of non-Newtonian and thermal effects in the study of EHL. 展开更多
