Burn injury is a major public health concern, with an estimated 180,000 deaths each year associated with burn-related infections. The majority of these occur in low-and middle-income countries, and almost two-thirds occur in the World Health Organization African and South-East Asia Regions. There is a risk of an escalation of burn injury site infections if nurses who are directly involved in burn care do not develop a mechanism to mitigate this risk in the coming years.Hence, this study aims at explaining what burn injuries are and how nurses can prevent the occurrence of infection among burn victims. This review analyzed published studies using keywords such as burn injury, infection in burn patients, and nurses’involvement in infection prevention and control(IPC)on search engines such as PubMed,Science Direct, and Google Scholar. The literature was retrieved and reviewed for eligibility to capture just the variables indicated in this seminar objective;the date range chosen in the literature search was from 2015 to 2023.The study found that many patients die from burn injuries as a result of exposure to infection and most nurses are not adequately informed about infection control. The study also found that nurses’responsibilities include proper hand hygiene, wound care, the use of personal protective equipment, antibiotic medication, cleaning the patient’s surroundings, and preventing patient cross-contamination.Burn injuries pose a significant risk to patients, necessitating infection control and prevention. Therefore, nurses in burn units should be informed on IPC practices and also educate patients, families, and coworkers on their importance. 展开更多

Cervical cancer remains a major public health problem accounting for continuous female death in developing countries.Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women globally with an estimated number of 500,000 new cases of cervical cancer and 273,000 mortalities annually.Cervical screening is the best cancer screening test in the history of medicine and most cost-effective of all medical screening tests. The study review aimed to highlight methods of cervical cancer prevention, identify the uptake of cervical screening among women, and explain the role of nurses in uptake of cervical screening.Cervical cancer is preventable and easily treatable if it is detected at early stages, but poor information on prevention and access to screening and treatment contributes to 90%of deaths. In the developing countries such as Nigeria,a large proportion of cervical cancers are diagnosed in advanced stages, with poor rates of survival. The three main methods for preventing cervical cancer are through primary prevention(human papillomavirus vaccination and health education),secondary prevention(cervical screening, early detection of precancerous lesions, and treatment),and tertiary prevention(measures to slow the progression or recurrence, surgical removal, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy).Nurses can help improve the acceptability of this neglected promise by focusing on health education on cervical screening and vaccination in prenatal clinics and infant welfare clinics where there are more women.Inclusion of cyberspace could also serve as a successful and popular platform for this health teaching. All nurses/midwives must preach and fervently work toward the WHO 90–70–90 plan for eradicating cervical cancer. 展开更多

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is the second reason of death due to tumor. In order to find more effective methods for prevention of DVT due to gynecologic tumor, the advances of study and practice in this aspect should be summarized. As an important and effective measure for prevention of DVT, the comprehensive nursing is to be analyzed carefully. Lots of practices show that proper nursing measures can prevent effectively the occurrence of postoperative DVT. Virchow thought that DVT is caused by three factors: injury of venous wall, slowed blood flow and hypercoagulability. Thus, the prevention measures are presented on the factors such as application of sequential decompression elastic socks, intraoperative intervention etc. Clinical nursing pathway is shown to be very effective method recently. More effective measures and related facilities for prevention of DVT should be built in the future. Physical and psychological methods should be combined in the nursing of DVT. 展开更多

Pressure ulcers (PU) are one of the most common hospital-acquired problems that occur in patients with mobility limitations. Such wounds can produce pain and deterioration of the underlying condition. Sometimes, they can be life-threatening, and their treatment can impose a financial burden on both the patient’s family and society. Nurses’ knowledge, attitude, and practice are the most important weapons to fight this preventable burden of PU among patients with impaired mobility. The purpose of this study was to assess nurses’ knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding PU prevention and treatment at Clinique Prince Louis Rwagasore (CPLR) in Bujumbura, Burundi. A cross-sectional study design was used. Convenience sampling was used to invite all 28 qualified nurses and nurses’ aids who work in the services where critically ill patients are admitted to participate. A questionnaire was created, and underwent evaluation of face validity before using it to collect data which was analysed using SPSS 21.0. Results revealed that nurses’ knowledge and practice scores were low as participants scored less than 50% on the six knowledge items and the six practice items. However, the attitude scores were greater than 65% on the five items used to evaluate attitude. A strong negative correlation was found between nurses’ knowledge and their attitude scores (r = ?0.479, p = 0.015). Education level was negatively associated with nurses’ knowledge and practice scores of PU prevention and treatment. A high attitude score did not correlate with a higher practice score which might be explained by low knowledge scores (less than 50% on knowledge items). Continuous professional development (CPD) was recommended to improve nurses’ knowledge scores and implementation of PU preventive practices at CPLR. 展开更多

The purpose of this paper is to explore the stimulating factors and the obstacles experienced by nurses in community health centres in their work with prevention and health promotion. We conducted the qualitative research design consisting of fifteen nurses in five community health centres in Ghent. There was also a focus group and participant observation. All participants experienced stimulating factors as well as obstacles in their work with preventive interventions. The most strongly facilitators were the Electronic Medical File and the multidisciplinary approach. The obstacles mentioned by the nurses were the communication problems and the financial problems. This study may have an important impact on nursing practice and nursing prevention. Further research is needed on nurses working in community health centres and the way they approach their patients in the course of preventive actions. 展开更多

Background: Infants with developmental skull asymmetry referred to the physiotherapist have increased since 1990. At the physiotherapy clinic the parents often claim that they did not get enough or unclear information from the Health Care Centre. Aim: To investigate where a possible gap between parents and nurses comprehension is, and also to give proposals how to achieve more effective information. Method: A survey with quantitative approach, questionnaires were distributed to nurses and parents. Results: 84% of the nurses totally agreed that they inform all parents about preventative intervention. 98% of the nurses totally agreed that they inform about tummy time and 85% stated that they inform about the variation of head position. There were significant differences between nurses and parents’ perception regarding optimal time of receiving information, parents estimated that it was provided late. Only 19% of the nurses totally agreed that the routines were good enough. Conclusion: This study indicates that nurses inform but the parents do not always comprehend the information or understand the importance. Only a fifth of the nurses totally agreed that the routines are good enough, this indicates that better routines are needed. The nurses found it easier to give preventative information than giving information when a skull asymmetry had developed. 展开更多

Background: Surgical Site Infection (SSI) is one of the most common healthcare-associated infections, its account for up to 16% of all healthcare-associated infections worldwide. The SSIs can contribute to post-operative morbidity, prolonged recovery, delayed discharge and increasing cost. Nurses’ knowledge of the evidence-based recommendations is necessary to provide high-quality nursing care. Aims: To assess the level of Jordanian nurses’ knowledge regarding evidence based guidelines for the prevention of SSIs, to describe the relationship between nurses’ knowledge and selected sociodemographics, to examine the differences in nurses’ knowledge with respect to selected dichotomized variables, and to identify the most significant predictors of Jordanian nurses’ knowledge regarding evidence based guidelines for the prevention of SSIs. Design: Cross-sectional design. Sample: Two hundred registered nurses at four targeted hospitals were recruited conveniently. Results: The mean of the total knowledge scores of the sample was 3.28 out of nine (SD = 1.72, range = 0 - 7), the median was 3 out of nine. There were a statistically significant correlation between all tested continuous sociodemographics variables and the total knowledge score (p > 0.05). There is a significant difference in nurses’ knowledge between those who are attending to special surgical related training course and who are not. The most significant predictors of Jordanian nurses’ knowledge were: the number of credit hours attended by nurses for surgical-related training courses and the total years of work experience in nursing. These variables explained 16.7% of variance. Conclusion: The results of this study shed light on the obstacles that hampers the Jordanian nurses’ knowledge regarding evidence based guidelines for the prevention of SSIs in acute care settings. However, the successful implementation of infection control measures, particularly SSIs prevention measures, and well-structured continuing education programs are considered as a substantial element that would improve nurses’ knowledge. 展开更多

As dehydration is related to negative health outcomes in the elderly, including an increased risk of disability and death, prevention may help improve health, functional status, and quality of life.Dehydration diagnosis can be challenging in the elderly as the traditional physical indications of dehydration may be absent or ambiguous.Numerous etiologies place the elderly at an increased risk. The role of the community health nurse(CHN)derives from the responsibilities attached to her,and the Betty Neuman’s Systems Model of health care with three levels of protection is usually applied to the CHN.In this mini-review,we try to integrate the Betty Neuman’s Systems Model with the results of identified articles. This study includes a literature search of reputable international databases such as SpringerLink,PubMed,Embase, and Wanfang, particularly for the period 2005 to the present.Ten articles that met the qualifying criteria were included in this study. The findings of this study draw a picture of the role of CHN in preventing dehydration across the three levels of prevention as mentioned by Betty Neuman. 展开更多
