Design: Feasibility study. Setting: A single center. Participants: Twenty women having a preexisting diagnosis of FM based on American College of Rheumatology criteria were recruited. Intervention: Subjects received a total of 18 sessions of light massage administered by a physical therapist twice a week and then performed passive stretching exercises. Main out-come measures: heart rate (HR) and Heart Rate variability (HRV), the assessment of joint flexi-bility through elettrogoniometer, the Fibromyal-gia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Borg scale or Rating of Perceived exertion (RPE). Evalua-tions were conducted at the screening visit (T0), immediately at the end of the session of mas-sage (T1) and after completion of 18 sessions (T2). Results: HRV showed an improvement in terms of decreased sympathetic tone and in-crease of parasympathetic tone at the end of treatment. Also joint flexibility showed a sig-nificant improvement at T2 compared with the screening. FIQ, PSQI, RPE did not change. Conclusions: the findings highlight the excellent compliance of FM patients to the combined therapy of massage and stretching, showing an amelioration of muscle stiffness and an improvement of autonomic nervous system with a decrease of sympathetic tone and an increase of parasympathetic tone. The questionnaires did not show any ameliorations, probably because in these patients the perception of quality of life is distorted compared with more objective pa-rameters, such as muscle rigidity, the articular mobility and the autonomic nervous system. 展开更多

Obesity, particularly abdominal obesity, increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study investigates the effects of six-week (twice a week, 12 sessions total) extracorporeal shockwave therapy (SWT) and hand massage therapy (HT) on body composition and serum lipids in overweight and obese Korean women aged between 35 and 59, according to their serum cholesterol level (≥200 mg/dL versus <200 mg/dL). After the program, weights decreased significantly in both the HT Group and SWT Group (p < 0.05);weights of those with cholesterol < 200 mg/dL significantly decreased in the HT Group (p = 0.038), while weights of those with cholesterol ≥ 200 mg/dL significantly decreased in the SWT Group (p = 0.001). BMIs decreased significantly in both the HT Group and the SWT Group (p < 0.05);BMIs of those with cholesterol < 200 mg/dL significantly decreased in the HT Group (p = 0.018), while BMIs of those with cholesterol ≥ 200 mg/dL significantly decreased in the SWT Group (p = 0.001). The body fat percentage of subjects significantly decreased only in the SWT Group (p = 0.027);the waist-hip ratio significantly decreased only in HT Group (p = 0.034). Serum cholesterol levels significantly decreased in those with cholesterol < 200 mg/dL in the HT Group (p < 0.05) and those with cholesterol ≥ 200 mg/dL in SWT Group (p = 0.055). Triglyceride significantly decreased in both those with cholesterol < 200 mg/dL and those with cholesterol ≥ 200 mg/dL, but did not significantly decrease in either subgroup of the HT Group. The study results suggest that SWT is effective in improving body measurements and serum lipids in those with cholesterol ≥ 200 mg/dL, while HT therapy is effective in those with cholesterol < 200 mg/dL. In conclusion, SWT and HT improved abdominal obesity by reducing body weight and waist circumference and helped improving serum lip index, suggesting the benefit for managing body measurements and serum lipids of overweight and obese individuals. 展开更多

Sub-health state is a kind of low-quality state between health and disease, and will lead to disease if not intervened in time. As one of the external treatment options in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), massage therapy has achieved an ideal curative effect in the treatment of the sub-health state. This paper summarizes the articles on massage treatment for the treatment of patients in the sub-health state from the past decade. It mainly includes the current understanding of sub-health, treatment ideas and specific methods, as well as clinical classification of treatment modalities. From the perspective of treatment ideas and specific methods, most massage therapies are performed under the guidance of the holistic concept of TCM, and the concept of treatment based on syndrome differentiation (four diagnostic methods of TCM: inspection, auscultation, inquiry, and palpation). In this treatment, not only are the therapeutic functions of meridians and acupoints emphasized, but the selection of the therapeutic time is also performed according to the "Ziwuliuzhu" and the "Lingguibafa"(the acupuncture method based on time in ancient China). According to the different clinical symptoms of sub-health, it can be divided into three types: physical sub-health, psychological sub-health, and social adaptive sub-health. Massage therapy eliminates pain, relieves physical fatigue, and has a good therapeutic effect on physical sub-health. It can alleviate anxiety and depression, promote psychosomatic pleasure of patients, and has a satisfactory regulatory effect on the psychological sub-health symptoms. However, basic research on using modern medical theories and the means to explain its mechanism of action is relatively weak. Therefore, only constantly improving the quality of clinical observation and strengthening basic research can provide more and better evidence for the clinical application of massage therapy in treating the symptoms of the sub-health status. 展开更多

Background and Purpose: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common source of hand numbness and pain. The goal of this study was to compare longitudinal stretching of muscles and nerve to deep transverse friction massage for decreasing pain and improving hand function in patients with chronic CTS. Subjects and Methods: Thirty patients, 25 to 40 years old, were included in this study and randomized into two groups: the first group (36.8 ± 0.262) followed a physical therapy program group receiving stretching of wrist and hand flexors in combination with ultrasound, strengthening exercises of wrist and hand flexors, and wrist splint, three sessions per week for 12 weeks;and the second group (35.9 ± 0.225) followed the physical therapy program of deep transverse friction massage on the carpal tunnel site at the wrist joint, with using ultrasonic therapy, strengthening exercises of wrist and hand flexors and wrist splint, three sessions per week for 12 weeks. Outcome measures were range of motion (ROM), pain using visual analog scale (VAS), and hand grip strength measured with a sphygmomanometer. Results: There was a significant difference in both groups in all outcome measures compared to baseline. Over stretching group showed significant difference at the end of study in terms of range of motion of wrist flexion, extension and strength of handgrip when compared to deep friction massage group P < 0.05. However, there is no significant difference between groups in pain. Discussion and Conclusion: This study showed that the effect of stretching exercises is more beneficial than deep transverse friction massage in the treatment of patients with CTS in decreasing the compression of the median nerve in the tunnel. 展开更多

Objective:To evaluate the clinical value of synthetical therapy of acupuncture and massage for treating vertebral artery type cervical spondylosis (VACS). Methods: In the present study, triple-center, single-blind, randomized and control methods were adopted. Qualified subjects were randomly assigned to three groups: acupuncture-massage (acu-mas) group, acupuncture group, and massage group (60 subjects in each group). Bilateral Fengchi (风池GB 20), Jiaji (夹脊EX-B 2, C_ 4-7) and Baihui (百会GV 20) were punctured in combination with massage at the neck-shoulder and back region. The treatment was conducted once daily, 14 times altogether. Results: After treatment, of the 60 cases in each of acu-mas, acupuncture and massage groups, 28, 11 and 13 were cured, 13, 20 and 17 markedly effective, 12, 14 and 16 effective, and 7, 15 and 14 ineffective, with the total effective rates being 88.3%, 75.0% and 76.7% respectively. The therapeutic effect of acu-mas group was significantly superior to that of simple acupuncture and massage groups (P<0.05). The scores of clinical symptoms and signs in 3 groups all declined significantly after treatment (P<0.01), and the score of symptoms of acu-mas was markedly lower than those of acupuncture and massage groups (P<0.05). No significant differences were found among 3 groups in the score of clinical signs and between acupuncture and massage groups in the score of clinical symptoms (P>0.05). The time for producing therapeutic effects in acu-mas group was significantly shorter than those of acupuncture and massage groups (P<0.01, 0.05), meaning a faster of acu-mas group in producing clinical effect. No adverse events were found in all the 3 groups. Conclusion: Acupuncture and massage are effective and safe in the treatment of VACS, and the therapeutic effect of acupuncture combined with massage is superior to that of simple acupuncture and simple massage therapy. 展开更多

Objective: To observe the effect of acupuncture combined with massage on blood flow velocity of the vertebro-basilar artery in cervical spondylosis of vertebral arterial type (CSVAT) patients. Methods: In the present study, methods of evidence-based medicine, triple-centers, single-blindness, randomization and control were used. A total of 100 cases of CSVAT patients were randomized into acupuncture plus massage (acu-massage) group (n=38), acupuncture group (n=32) and massage group (n=30). Acupoints used were Fengchi (风池GB 20), cervical Jiaji (颈夹脊EX-B 2), Baihui (百会GV 20), and the methods of massage used were kneading-rolling, adhesion-separating and acupoint-digital pressing, topical digital pressing and rubbing, traction-extending and mild palm-rubbing. The treatment was conducted once daily, with 7 sessions being a therapeutic course and continuously for 2 courses. Changes of peak velocity (Vp), end-diastolic velocity (Vd), mean velocity (Vm) of blood flow of the vertebral artery (VA) and basilar artery (BA), etc were detected before and after the treatment by using transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasonography. Results: After the treatment, the abnormally low Vp of both VA and BA in acu-massage, acupuncture and massage groups, Vm of VA in acu-massage and acupuncture groups, Vm of BA in acu-massage and massage groups, and Vd of VA and BA in the 3 groups all increased significantly in comparison with their own pretreatment (P<0.05, 0.01), and the therapeutic effects of acu-massage group in the 3 indexes were significantly superior to those of acupuncture group and/or massage group (P<0.05, 0.01). The abnormally increased Vp of VA in acu-massage and acupuncture groups, Vm of VA in the 3 groups, and Vd of VA in acu-massage and massage groups decreased obviously after the treatment in comparison with their own pretreatment (P<0.05, 0.01), and the therapeutic effects of acu-massage group were significantly superior to those of acupuncture and/or massage group in the 3 indexes of VA (P<0.05, 0.01).
