The relation among electronic structure, chemical bond and property of Ti2AlC, Ti3AlC2 and doping Si into Ti2AlC was studied by density function and the discrete variation (DFT-DVM) method. After adding Si into Ti2AlC, the interaction between Si and Ti is weaker than that between Al and Ti, and the strengths of ionic and covalent bonds decrease both. The ionic and covalent bonds in Ti3AlC2, especially in Ti-Al, are stronger than those in Ti2AlC. Therefore, in synthesis of Ti2AlC, the addition of Si enhances the Ti3AlC2 content instead of Ti2AlC. The density of state (DOS) shows that there is mixed conductor characteristic in Ti2AlC and Ti3AlC2. The DOS of Ti3AlC2 is much like that of Ti2AlC. Ti2SiAl1-xC has more obvious tendency to form a semiconductor than Ti2AlC, which is seen from the obvious difference of partial DOS between Si and Al 3/7. 展开更多

These excellent properties indicate that Ti3AlC2 is a very promising material to extensive applications. Ti3AlC2 ceramic material was prepared by mechanical alloying. The effects of milling time and sintering temperature on the fracture, microstmctttre and mechanical properties of Ti3AlC2 ceramic material were analyzed by laser particle analyzer, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. The experimental results showed that Ti3AlC2 had the best comprehensive properties after the composite powder was milled for 3 h and sintered at 1630℃ for 2 h. The relative density, bending strength, and hardness of the sample reached 92.23%, 345.2 MPa, and HRA 34.1, respectively. The fracture surface indicated that the fracture of the material belonged to ductile rapture. 展开更多

The effect of silicon on synthesis of Ti3AlC2 by spark plasma sintering (SPS) from TiC/Ti/Al powders was investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used for phase identification and microstructure evaluation. The results show that addition of silicon can considerably accelerate the synthesis reaction of Ti3AlC2 and fully dense, essentially single-phase (purity 〉98%) polycrystalline Ti3AlC2 could be successfully obtained by sintering 2TiC/lTi/lAl/0.2Si powders at 1 200- 1 250 ℃ under a pressure of 30 MPa. SEM photographs show that the obtained Ti3AlC2 samples from mixtures powders are in plane-shape with a size of about 2-5 μm and 10-25 μm in the thickness dimension and elongated dimension, respectively. 展开更多

The interfacial reaction behavior of Al and Ti_3AlC_(2)at different pouring temperatures and its effect on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated.The results show that the addition of3.0 wt.%Ti_3AlC_(2)refines the average grain size ofα(Al)in the composite by 50.1%compared to Al6061 alloy.Morphological analyses indicate that an in-situ Al_(3Ti)transition layer of-180 nm in thickness is generated around the edge of Ti_3AlC_(2)at 720℃,forming a well-bonded Al-Al_(3Ti)interface.At this processing temperature,the ultimate tensile strength of A16061-3.0 wt.%Ti_3AlC_(2)composite is 199.2 MPa,an improvement of 41.5%over the Al6061 matrix.Mechanism analyses further elucidate that 720℃is favourable for forming the nano-sized transition layer at the Ti_3AlC_(2)edges.And,the thermal mismatch strengthening plays a dominant role in this state,with a strengthening contribution of about 74.8%. 展开更多

Quaternary carbide Ti3NiAl2C ceramics has been investigated as a potential nuclear fusion structural material,and it has advantages in certain aspects compared with Ti2AlC,Ti3AlC2,and Ti3SiC2 structural materials.In this paper,quaternary carbide Ti3NiAl2C ceramics is pressurized to investigate its structural,mechanical,electronic properties,and Debye temperature.Quaternary carbide Ti3NiAl2C ceramics still maintains a cubic structure under pressure(0–110 GPa).At zero pressure,quaternary carbide Ti3NiAl2C ceramics only has three bonds:Ti–Al,Ni–Al,and Ti–C.However,at pressures of 20 GPa,30 GPa,40 GPa,60 GPa,and 70 GPa,new Ti–Ni,Ti–Ti,Al–Al,Ti–Al,and Ti–Ti bonds form.When the pressure reaches 20 GPa,the covalent bonds change to metallic bonds.The volume of quaternary carbide Ti3NiAl2C ceramics can be compressed to 72%of its original volume at most.Pressurization can improve the mechanical strength and ductility of quaternary carbide Ti3NiAl2C ceramics.At 50–60 GPa,its mechanical strength can be comparable to pure tungsten,and the material changes from brittleness to ductility.However,the degree of anisotropy of quaternary carbide Ti3NiAl2C ceramics increases with the increasing pressure.In addition,we also investigated the Debye temperature,density,melting point,hardness,and wear resistance of quaternary carbide Ti3NiAl2C ceramics under pressure. 展开更多

In this study, vacuum atmosphere. The diffusion bonding of TiAI alloy and Ti3AlC2 ceramic was carried out using Ni foil as interlayer in a interfacial microstructures and the mechanical properties of the diffusion bonded joints were evaluated. Result showed that the interfacial microstructure of the joint from TiAl to Ti3AlC2 side could be divided into Al3NiTi2 , AlNi2 Ti , Ni3 ( Al, Ti) , Ni , Ni3 ( Al , Ti) , Ni ( Al , Ti ) , Ni3Al + TiC~ + Ti3AlC2 , respectively. The shear strength test showed that an average value of 45.9 MPa was achieved. The crack propagated along the interface between TiAl intermetallic and Ni interlayer during the shear test. The mechanisms f or formation of those compound layers during bonding process and the determinant of the fracture location were also discussed. 展开更多

Slip casting and subsequent pressureless sintering(PLS)allow the preparation of complex-shaped and large-sized Ti3AlC2 components for many potential applications.The behaviors of the suspensions,green compacts,and sintered samples of Ti3AlC2 were studied in this paper.The optimized condition of 1 wt%of arabic gum as dispersant at pH=10 results in a Ti3AlC2 suspension for slip casting Ti3AlC2 green compacts without macro defects or cracks.The sintering temperature and Al4C3 embedding powder are found to dominate the properties of the sintered Ti3AlC2 samples.The Ti3AlC2 sample sintered at 1450℃for 1.5 h with Al4C3 embedding powder reaches the best properties,namely 95.3%relative density,hardness of 4.18 GPa,thermal conductivity of 29.11W·m-1·K-1,and electrical resistivity of 0.39μΩ·m.The findings in this work may pave the way for the application of MAX phases with large size and complex shape. 展开更多
