The results showed that walnuts were rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, and the ratio of ω-6 to ω-3 fattyacids was close to the recommendation of Chinese Nutrition Society. Moreover, walnuts contain high contents oftocopherols (331.20–414.71 mg/kg), phytosterols (97.17–110.35 mg/100 g) and phenols (38.51–48.08 mg GAE/kg). Significant chemical differences exist among walnuts from three production regions. The highest content ofpolyunsaturated fatty acids was found in walnuts from the northern China, the highest content of tocopherols inwalnuts from southwest China, and the highest contents of phytosterol and TPC in walnuts from northwest China. However, there was no significant difference in the tocopherol, phytosterol and TPC content of walnuts betweenthe Northern China and Northwest China. The above results provide important references for manufacturers andconsumers to select suitable walnut scientifically and reasonably.展开更多

The objective of this work was to highlight the importance of green tea by evaluating the antioxidant activity of the most popular green tea brands in Saudi Arabia, Lipton and Rabea. To our knowledge, no studies have so far been done to estimate the antioxidant activity of these brands. To determine the antioxidant activities of these two brands, 10 mg/ml of each brand was extracted and their total phenolic content (TPC), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity, ferric reducing power and ferrous ion chelating effect were measured. The TPC of Lipton tea was 678.7 υg of gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/10mg, whereas in Rabea tea, the TPC was 647.1 υg GAE/10mg. The presence study indicated that there were no significant differences in total phenolic contents and the percentage inhibition as shown in DPPH and H2O2 assays among Lipton and Rabea green teas. Moreover, it was found that all assays have exhibited high antioxidant activity in both green teas. In conclusion, our study showed evidence for evenness and stability of the antioxidant activity of the two commercial green teas available in the markets of Saudi Arabia. Continued researches are needed to further the current knowledge on the health-promoting effects of this popular beverage using different supplements by different mechanisms.展开更多

The above results provide important references for manufacturers andconsumers to select suitable walnut scientifically and reasonably.

文摘The antioxidant activities and the total phenolic contents of the water and/or ethanol extracts of the nine selected culinary spices from China were systematically investigated. Both ethanol extracts and water extracts had high ability of 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) radical scavenging, 2, 2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)(ABTS) radical scavenging and ferric reducing antioxidant power(FRAP). The ethanol extract of Sichuan pepper showed the highest ability of DPPH radical scavenging. The extract with the highest ABTS radical scavenging effect was that of ethanol extract of cinnamon. Both ethanol and water extracts of cinnamon possessed the high ferric reducing antioxidant power(FRAP) with the values of 4 541.87 and 1 134.52 μmol of Fe(Ⅱ)/g. The extracts with high hydroxyl radical-mediated deoxyribose degradation were all the ethanol extracts as follows: cinnamon, bay leaf, Sichuan pepper, star anise and fennel. The extracts with high antioxidant activities also had the high contents of the phenols. The study indicated that these spices might be potentially be used as natural antioxidants in food.

文摘In this study,we investigated the effects of environmental factors on plant phenolic variability, seasonal dynamics of total phenolic content(TP),extractable condensed tannins(ECT),protein-bound condensed tannins(PBCT),fiber-bound condensed tannins(FBCT),total condensed tannins(TCT),protein precipitation capacity(PPC)and nutrient content in the branchlets and fine roots of Casuarina equisetifolia.TP and TCT concentrations in branchlets were lowest in the spring, then increased in summer and autumn, similar to the seasonal dynamics in air temperature.TP and TCT concentrations in fine roots were highest in summer, coinciding with heavy precipitation. In general,TP and TCT concentrations were higher in branchlets than in fine roots. No significant difference was found in C concentration among various seasons for either branchlets or fine roots.Branchlets had significantly higher N and P concentrations than fine roots in most seasons. The C/N and N/P ratios in branchlets were significantly lower than in fine roots in all seasons, except summer. The relationship between branchlets and fine roots was significant for C,P and FBCT,but no significant relationships were found for N,TP,ECT,PBCT and TCT.Additionally,TP and TCT content were each significantly correlated with PPC in branchlets and in fine roots. Both TP/N and TCT/N ratios were highest in the autumn for the branchlets and in the summer for fine roots. The results indicate that high temperatures lead to increased tannin production in branchlets, but that the tannin content in fine roots is mainly affected by precipitation.Tannin content was greater in branchlets than in fine roots, which may indicate that selective pressure is greater on branchlets than on fine roots.

文摘Objective:To investigate the antioxidant, antibacterial, and chemical ingredients of Ardisia elliptica(A.elliptica) methanolic extracts. Methods:The plant was extracted using methanol.Antibacterial and antioxidant activities were evaluated. Results:The results showed that both fruit and leaf extract of A.elliptica have significant antibacterial activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.Fruit extracts showed higher content of phenolic(71 ± 0.03 GAE/mg extract dry weight),in comparison to the leaf extracts(37 ± 0.05 GAE/mg extract dry weight).Flavonoid content, and Fe2+chelating activity of fruit extracts were higher than leaf extract. The percentage radical inhibition of fruit extract is found to be higher(70%) than that of leaf extract(60%).LCMS results indicated that the major compounds in the fruit extract were Gingerol,Aspidin,Kampherol, and Stercuresin, while the leaf extract contained Gingerol,Aspidin,Triangularin, and Salicyl acyl glucuronide.Furthermore, the results of GCMS indicated that fruit extract contained these major compounds:Vitamin E Tocopherol,5-hepylresornicol,2-Nonylmalonic acid,5-pentadecylresornicol,and Stigmasta-7-22-dien-3-ol.However,leaf extract of A.elliptica contained these major compounds:Alpha Amyrenol,4,4,6,6a,6b,8,8a,9,10,11,12,12 a,14,14 a,14 b octadehydro-2H-picen-3-one,and Lonasterol,4-t-Butyl-2-[4-nitrophenyl] phenol. Conclusions:The results provide evidence that fruit and leaf of A.elliptica extracts might indeed be used as a potential source of effective natural antimicrobial and antioxidant agents in pharmaceutical and food industries.
文摘This present study compared antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of acetone and water extracts of <i>Theobroma cacao</i> beans against <i>Escherichia coli</i>. Total phenolic content (TPC) in both extracts was estimated by the Folin-Denis reagent. The present study showed that the 70% (v/v) acetone extract had a higher extraction yield and TPC (37% and 109 mg TAE g-1 dry weight) than the water extract (33% and 76 mg TAE g-1 dry weight). The antioxidant activities of both extracts were estimated by the DPPH Scavenging Assay. The extract obtained using 70% (v/v) acetone showed higher antioxidant activity (54%) compared to the antioxidant activity obtained using water (34%). Antimicrobial activities of acetone and water extracts from <i>Theobroma cacao</i> were measured against <i>Escherichia coli</i> and were screened by agar well diffusion method and further confirmed with the disc diffusion method. The bacterial growth was measured in Mueller Hinton agar. The extracts inhibited the growth of the <i>Escherichia coli</i> cultured, and the acetone extracts showed antimicrobial capacity comparable or equivalent, as seen in commercial ampicillin.
文摘Objective:To evaluate the antioxidant potential and pancreatic lipase inhibitory action of optimized hydroethanolic extracts of Solanum nigrum. Methods:Optimized extraction for maximum recovery of metabolites was performed using a combination of freeze-drying and ultrasonication followed by determination of antioxidant and antiobesity properties. The ultra-high performance liquid chromatography equipped with mass spectrometry was used to analyze metabolite profiling of Solanum nigrum.Computational studies were performed using molecular docking and electrostatic potential analysis for individual compounds. The hypolipidemic potential of the most potent extract was assessed in the obese mice fed on fat rich diet. Results:The 80%hydroethanolic extract exhibited the highest extract yield, total phenolic contents, total flavonoid contents along with the strongest 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl scavenging activity, total antioxidant power, and pancreatic lipase inhibitory properties. The 80%hydroethanolic extract not only regulated the lipid profile of obese mice but also restricted the weight gain in the liver, kidney, and heart. The 80%hydroethanolic extract also reduced alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase concentrations in serum. The effects of plant extract at 300 mg/kg body weight were quite comparable with the standard drug orlistat. Conclusions:Solanum nigrum is proved as an excellent and potent source of secondary metabolites that might be responsible for obesity mitigation.

文摘Objective:To determine the total phenolic content, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the extracts from Calophyllum symingtonianum. Methods:The extracts were tested for their antioxidant activity by the DPPH radical scavenging assay and the β-carotene bleaching assay, while the antimicrobial activity was determined by disc diffusion method. Results:All the tested extracts showed antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The extracts showed moderate antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus with zone of inhibition values of 10,11 and 12 mm for n-hexane,dichloromethane and methanol extracts respectively at 30μg/disc.N-hexane showed low antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa(5 mm)at 30μg/disc.The total phenolic test showed that methanol has high phenolic content(162.25 mg GAE/g of extract)compared to the other extracts. Conclusions:The ability of the extracts to inhibit microbial growth at a concentration of 30μg/disc indicated the its potent antimicrobial activity.
文摘Background:Vitis vinifera is universally appreciated herb(especially fruit)for their delicacy, nutrition and conventional as functional food.In the present study,we evaluated anti-hypercholesterolemic potential of Vitis vinifera red leaves extract in experimental wistar male rats.Material and methods:Qualitative and quantitative phytochemical screening of vitis vinifera methanolic extract(VVME)and vitis vinifera aqueous extract aqueous(VVAE)extract was carried out to identify the phytoconstituents. The anti-hypercholesterolemic activity was evaluated by inducing hypercholesterolemia with high cholesterol diet for 21 days in experimental animals.During the experimental periods parameters like lipid profile, liver function test, atherogenic index and histopathological studies were analysed. Results:Total tannins, total flavonoids and total phenolic contents were found in major amount in VVME.The lipid levels were significantly attenuated by different doses of VVME and VVAE.Moreover,VVME was found more effective than VVAE and histopathological results confirmed the effectiveness of VVME.Conclusion:It can be concluded that anti-hypercholesterolemic efficacy of Vitis vinifera might be due to presence of active phytoconstituents and its antioxidant efficacy.
文摘The purpose of the current study was to determine the total phenolic and flavonoid content and total antioxidant activity of the Curcuma longa, Acorus calamus, and Camellia sinensis ethanolic extracts and their free radical scavenging activity. The study concluded that the Curcuma longa, Acorus calamus, and Camellia sinensis ethanolic extracts have a good source of phenolics, flavonoids, and antioxidant sources in turn which opens the high possibility of the extracts being used as food preservatives. The DPPH assay for scavenging free radicals showed that the IC50 value was above 123% of Curcuma longa ethanolic extract, 129.9% μg/ml of Acorus calamus ethanolic extract and 25% of Camellia sinensis ethanolic extracts shows very strong inhibition of the free radicals. Thus, comparing the DPPH assay for scavenging free radicals of Curcuma longa, Acorus calamus and Camellia sinensis ethanolic extracts with the positive control ascorbic acid, Curcuma longa and Camellia sinensis ethanolic extracts showed strong inhibition of the free radicals.
文摘The effect of foliar spray of young lemon trees with Chitosan (CH) (200 - 300 - 400 ppm), on antioxidant enzymes activities (peroxidase POD, polyphenol oxidase PPO) and total phenolic content, and their influence on leaf miner (Phyllocnistis citrella) activity (tunnel length and damage density) under field condition was investigated. The results showed that treatment with chitosan 300 ppm enhanced the total phenolic content (5.975 mg/g) and the POD activity (0.533 min-1 mg-1 protein), while PPO activity was increased by chitosan 200 ppm (1.394 ΔA/min/g FW). The results demonstrated as well that chitosan treatment has a beneficial effect in reducing leaf miner activity, by decreasing tunnel length and damage density.
文摘Antioxidants have numerous applications due to their multiple roles in diminishing harmful effects of oxidative stress. Continued researches are needed to further the current knowledge on the health-promoting effects of this popular beverage using different supplements by different mechanisms.
