As an important platform on which culture can be demonstrated, the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics not only showcases to the world China's profound traditional culture, but manifests the brilliant modern Chinese civilization. This fully reflects that Chinese culture is deeply rooted in its tradition and thus obtains and exhibits its strong vitality. In the performances of the opening ceremony, how is the traditional Chinese culture blended with the modern civilization through the programming? What kinds of cultural elements should be selected so as to present the spirit and the essence of the Chinese culture to the world? This paper, through grasping the overall form and scrutinizing meticulously the typical elements in the performances, aims to explore the cultural mechanism included in the large-scale modern cultural activities on the one hand. On the other, it intends to reveal that China tries to demonstrate the achievements of its modernization drive through successfully hosting the Games which is taken as a vital part of modern project. More importantly, China which is in the period of social transformation uses the opening ceremony to demonstrate its cultural awareness, cultural strategies and cultural consultation in a globalized world. 展开更多

China's traditional business cultureConfucian thought has had a profound influence on the way Chinese people do business. For example, "etiquette," the basic element of Confucianism, originated from the ritual worship of, and sacrifice to, the ancestors. Later it developed into a set of moral rules based On kinship and hierarchy, and has been weaved into five interpersonal relations: those between ruler and subject, father and son, husband and wife, brothers and friends. Not only did it play a role in solidifying patriarchal-feudal relationship, but it is deeply rooted in the living habits and customs of today and has become a force which regulates social interactions and behaviors. Since ancient times, the principle that "an even temper brings wealth" has been an essential part of Confucianism. 展开更多

This paper reexamines the metamorphosis of China's moral and cultural traditions in the course of modernization over the last hundred years and the complex relationship between Chinese modernity and the moral and cultural traditions latent in this metamorphosis, in the context of contemporary China. We deduce and demonstrate the following basic conclusion: modem China's attempt at resolving the dichotomy of liberalism and conservatism of moral cultural traditions shows that the country's post-tradition ethical culture faces the dilemma of whether to hold on to tradition or abandon it. However, the final result may be that modem China is still "within tradition" rather than "outside tradition." The only difference is that new socialist morality has risen dramatically to prominence out of intellectual debates in the last century and has become the mainstream moral culture of modem China. However, this does not represent something that is purely alien or "outside tradition," but rather a new stage in the development of Chinese moral tradition and Chinese modernity; it is still part of the chain of transmitted variants in China's long, profound and continuous moral cultural tradition. 展开更多

Traditional Chinese culture covers a variety of ethical principles and behavioral norms that have arisen from thousands of years of Chinese social life to handle interpersonal relationships in an appropriate way. Such principles and norms are a typical expression of Chinese people's wisdom in the analysis of their surroundings. However, traditional Chinese culture also contains some poisonous thinking that has been carefully nurtured by feudal rulers to maintain their power. In the practice of the great social changes of pre-1949 China, after repeated experience, people gained a relatively clear and comprehensive understanding of traditional Chinese culture: it should neither be totally affirmed nor totally rejected. Rather, we should analyze it concretely, endeavoring to separate the dross from the essence. In late Qing and Republican China, traditional culture was continuously handed on and renewed, and this process will be carried on and on. 展开更多

New Literature's Attack on and Inheritance of Traditional Culture

Although Chinese New Literature was strongly anti-traditional in expression, this does not sever the ties of blood that link it to traditional culture; and although it advocates a Western humanistic spirit, it does not install Western literature's aesthetic values. Due to the cultural distinctiveness and historical continuity of the Chinese language, it was never possible for the New Literature to become totally "Westernized" and turn its back on the mother culture. Therefore, when examining the modem transition of Chinese literature as a whole, we must pay attention to its conscious inheritance of the national cultural tradition and to its operating strategy of attacking traditional culture by making use of it, instead of insisting on its inevitable ties with modem Western literature. The New Literature is after all "Chinese" new literature; no matter how many external factors intervene or are involved, they cannot change its cultural attributes or identification with national culture. This is the premier precondition for our understanding of the modernity of New Literature. 展开更多

The present paper discusses the tension between tradition and modernity with respect to the teaching of English in Iran. It demonstrates that the second decade of the present century marks a shift, albeit nascent, in a) Iranian teachers and officials' attitudes towards the content and method of English language teaching in terms of the need for greater interaction in the classroom, and b) raised awareness of the importance of culture in language teaching. We pose the question: "how can Iran continue to build on new ideas about English language teaching at school and tertiary levels with a view to improving not only pupils'/students' performance but also embracing modernity in a globalized world?" The discussion is based on a survey of literature addressing the current state of English education in Iran. 展开更多

Global climate change and the accelerated melting of glaciers have raised concerns about the ability to manage ice-snow environments.Historically, human ancestors have mastered the ecological wisdom of working with ice-snow environments, but the phenomenon has not yet been articulated in cultural landscape methodologies that emphasize“nature-culture relevance”.The challenging living environment often compels indigenous people to form a strong bond with their surroundings, leading to the creation of long-term ecological wisdom through synergistic relationships with the environment. This ecological environment is conceptualized as a cognitive space in the form of the landscape, with which the aboriginal community norms and individual spirits continually interact.Such interactions generate numerous non-material cultural evidences, such as culture, art, religion, and other ideological aspects of the nation. These evidences symbolize the intellectual outcome of the relationship between humans and the landscape, and they create the“spiritual relevance”through personification and contextualization. The aim of the study is to explore the traditional ecological wisdom of the Inuit people who live in the harsh Arctic, and analyze the Inuit’s interaction with the landscape through the lens of“associative cultural landscape”,and decode the survival experience that the Inuit have accumulated through their long-term synergy with the Arctic environment. The findings focus on the synergy between the Inuit and the ice-snow landscape, examining the knowledge and ecological wisdom that the Inuit acquire from the ice-snow landscape. Our goal is to develop a perspective of the ecological environment from the viewpoint of aboriginal people and establish a methodology, model, and framework for“associative cultural landscape”that incorporates ethnic non-material cultural evidences. From the results,a total of nine models for interpreting traditional Inuit ecological wisdom are generated based on the“diamond model”of“associative cultural landscape”,covering the transition from the physical landscape to a spiritual one and demonstrating the associative role of the landscape in stimulating potential spiritual cognitive abilities in humans. 展开更多

Faith as a way of life and social memory exercises a decisive influence on the shape of the construction environment. Yet this relationship is rarely analyzed. On a general level, one reason for this deficiency is probably due to the spread of the ideology of modernity. Given that modernity is implicitly secular, it does not prompt to understand faith in its relationship with other phenomena. It is the same for architecture. We believe on the contrary that the construction environment and the cultural aspect must interact and complement each other. When this is not true or only partially true, this results in user dissatisfaction, and refusal to engage and participate in the process of changing that environment. Many authors have tried to show explicitly the influence of Islamic thought on the social organization and the housing as well as the link between housing and identity, but its implications have not always been understood and transmitted concretely. One thing is certain: the ideological -symbolic-metaphoric sphere is the essence of architecture, as are the program requirements: functionality, distributivity, health of the environment and technology of construction. In this contribution we will address the thorny issue of cultural and religious influences on the choice of the morphology of the habitat and its components, and we will try to highlight the interaction between architecture, faith and culture through analysis of a Mediterranean type "House with Patio" as a particular architectural style, which has been enriched through the centuries by different cultures. Although the course of this typology in each of these cultures and at different times has not been the same, this has only strengthened the mission and spirit of the "Patio" until the appropriation of this model by the Arab-Muslim peoples who were able to incorporate the Islamic perception in this space. 展开更多
