Correlation between Traditional Chinese Medicine symptom patterns and serum concentration of zinc,iron,copper and magnesium in patients with hepatitis B and associated liver cirrhosis

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the correlation between the patterns of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)syndromes and the serum concentration of zinc,iron,copper and magnesium of patients with chronic hepatitis B(CHB) and hepatitis B virus(HBV)-induced liver cirrhosis.METHODS:A total of 86 patients were included in the study between March 1,2009 and January 1,2010.All were diagnosed with CHB or HBV-induced liver cirrhosis according to the diagnosis standard of the Chinese Medical Association.Fasting serum concentrations of zinc,iron,copper and magnesium were measured.Patients were classified into different patterns of TCM symptoms according to TCM theory and clinical experience.RESULTS:In the HBV-induced liver cirrhosis group,the mean zinc concentration in patients with the TCM pattern of stagnation of fluid-Dampness was lower than that in patients with obstruction of collaterals by Blood stasis(P < 0.034).In the CHB group,the mean magnesium concentration in patients with toxic Heat flourishing was significantly lower than that in those with Damp-Heat in the Liver and Gallbladder,and those with Liver depression and Spleen deficiency(P < 0.021).The concentrations of iron and copper showed little difference among the different TCM symptom patterns.CONCLUSION:The serum zinc and magnesium concentrations correlated with certain TCM patterns of symptoms in patients with HBV-induced liver cirrhosis and CHB.It may be helpful to interpret the pathogenic change in the TCM symptom patterns in liver cirrhosis and CHB,and also to conduct clinical treatment of the diseases based on identified TCM patterns.

Systematic evaluation on curative effects of traditional Chinese medicine retention enemas for patients with radiation proctitis

Objectives： To systematically evaluate the curative effects of traditional Chinese medicine retention enemas for patients with radiation proctitis. Methods： Reports on randomized controlled trials （RCTs） on traditional Chinese medicine retention enemas in the treatment of radiation proctitis were searched in the Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, EBSCO, ISI, CNKI, V1P, WanFang Data and CBM databases. The publication dates were from inception to May 2014, and a literature screening, data extraction, quality evaluation and cross checks were inde- pendently conducted by two reviewers in accordance with the inclusion and exclusion criteria. A meta- analysis was then carried out using RevMan 5.3 software. Remits： In total, 14 RCTs were included, and of these, only 10 RCTs involving 702 patients were included in the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis showed that the total efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine retention enemas was higher for patients with radiation proctitis compared with that in control group, RR - 4.83, 95% C1 （2.98, 7.84）, P 〈 0.000 01 ; the results from four studies indicated that the improvement of clinical symptoms due to traditional Chinese medicine retention enemas was higher than that of the control group. Conclusions： The implementation of traditional Chinese medicine retention enemas could improve the total efficacy of treatment and provide relief in patients with radiation proctitis.

A quantification model of Traditional Chinese Medicine syndromes in children with idiopathic precocious puberty and early puberty

OBJECTIVE:To establish a quantification model of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)syndromes by sampling patients undergoing idiopathic precocious puberty(IPP)and early puberty.METHODS:A questionnaire for classifying and quantifying TCM syndromes was designed and administered.All the results were analyzed;the relationship between 3 types of syndrome and 47symptoms were summated.Meanwhile,the frequency distribution of each symptom or sign was aggregated.Fuzzy mathematics was used to develop a quantification model ofTCM syndromes.RESULTS:We found that precocious puberty had 3types of syndrome,including hyperactivity of fire due to Yin deficiency(Syndrome I),depressed liver Qi transforming into fire(Syndrome II),and end retention of damp heat(Syndrome III).In the IPP group,Syndrome I was the most common principal syndrome(100%).Forty-six patients(43.81%)werediagnosed with Syndrome I accompanied by Syndrome II and 11(10.48%)were diagnosed with Syndrome I accompanied by Syndrome III.In the early puberty group,Syndrome I was also the main syndrome(98.39%).The degrees of most symptoms were mild to moderate.Reddened tongue was the most common tongue manifestation(62.86%prevalence)in the IPP group.The most common pulse manifestations were slippery pulse,thread pulse,and taut pulse.The Asymptotic Normalization Coefficient(ANC)method was used to quantify the TCM syndromes in 167 cases.Diagnostic accuracy rate reached 91%,comparable to expert diagnosis.CONCLUSION:We find that there are 3 types of syndrome in the IPP group and in the early puberty group.Syndrome I(hyperactivity of fire due to Yin deficiency)is the main syndrome in the two groups.ANC may be an appropriate for quantification model ofTCM syndromes.

Clinical study on fire needle acupuncture treating irregular menstruation with spleen deficiency syndrome

Objective:To observe the clinical efficacy of fire needle acupuncture in treating irregular menstruation with spleen deficiency syndrome.Methods:60 patients with spleen deficiency-irregular menstruation were randomly divided into treatment group and control group of 30 each.In the treatment group,fire needle acupuncture was used to insert into Guanyuan,Qihai,Pishu,Sanyinjiao,Zusanli and Taibai points,while the filiform needle was used to needle the corresponding acupoints in the control group.After 8 weeks of treatment,menstrual cycle,menstrual period,menstrual volume,irregular menstrual symptom score and spleen deficiency symptom score were recorded.Results:Both treatments could effectively improve the menstrual cycle,menstrual period and menstrual volume,but there was no statistical significance between the two groups(P>0.05).Both treatments were effective in regulating the symptoms of menstruation,and fire needle acupuncture was better than filiform needle(P<0.05).Both treatments relieved the symptoms of spleen deficiency,and fire needle acupuncture was better than filiform needle(P<0.05).In terms of overall curative effect,the curative effect of fire needle acupuncture therapy was significantly better than filiform needle therapy,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusion:Fire needle acupuncture therapy could effectively regulate menstrual volume of patients with irregular menstruation of spleen deficiency syndrome,and relieve the symptoms of traditional Chinese medicine.
