This paper introduces a systems theory-driven framework to integration artificial intelligence(AI)into traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)research, enhancing the understanding of TCM’s holistic material basis while adhering to evidence-based principles.Utilizing the System Function Decoding Model(SFDM),the research progresses through define, quantify, infer, and validate phases to systematically explore TCM’s material basis. It employs a dual analytical approach that combines top-down,systems theory-guided perspectives with bottom-up,elements-structure-function methodologies, provides comprehensive insights into TCM’s holistic material basis. Moreover, the research examines AI’s role in quantitative assessment and predictive analysis of TCM’s material components, proposing two specific AIdriven technical applications. This interdisciplinary effort underscores AI’s potential to enhance our understanding of TCM’s holistic material basis and establishes a foundation for future research at the intersection of traditional wisdom and modern technology. 展开更多

Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)has become very popular in the treatment of complex diseases worldwide in recent decades.Despite the promising performance of TCM,how herbs work synergistically in a formula and their therapeutic targets remain ambiguous. This largely limits the correct use and modernization of TCM formulas clinically. The study of disassembled prescriptions is important for investigating the compatibility theory of Chinese medicines.By dissecting the mechanisms of TCM formulae, the compatibility principles of some well-known formulae, such as Realgar-Indigo naturalis, have been elucidated to a certain extent. In this review, several common methods of disassembled prescription studies are summarized, including those of single herb or mineral,sub-prescription,active ingredients or effective parts, large formulae, and systems pharmacology studies,as well as the methods of grouping based on the properties or efficacy of Chinese medicines,in order to provide evidence for formulae study. Moreover, some challenges to be addressed in disassembled prescriptions studies have been identified in this review. 展开更多

By using mathematical reasoning, this paper demonstrates the treatment principle: “Virtual disease is to fill his mother but real disease is to rush down his son” and “Strong inhibition of the same time, support the weak” based on “Yin Yang Wu Xing” Theory in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). We defined two kinds of opposite relations and one kind of equivalence relation, introduced the concept of steady multilateral systems with two non-compatibility relations, and discussed its energy properties. Later based on the treatment of TCM and treated the healthy body as a steady multilateral system, it has been proved that the treatment principle is true. The kernel of this paper is the existence and reasoning of the non-compatibility relations in steady multilateral systems, and it accords with the oriental thinking model. 展开更多

Theory of both Zangxiang (藏象) and Jingluo (经络) is useful in understanding disease. By using mathematical reasoning based on Yin Yang Wu Xing Theory in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this paper demonstrates the treatment principle: “Searching for a root cause of disease in cure, treatment of both the root-cause and symptoms at the same time” (治病求本, 标本兼治). It means that for a human body, there is the mathematical structure of both Zangxiang and Jingluo as her/his second physiological system. It can be used to determine both the root-cause and symptoms of the sick organ by using both Zangxiang and Jingluo. In general, for the human blood pH value, the normal range of theory is [7.34539, 7.45461] nearly to [7.35, 7.45], and the center is 7.4. The first or second transfer law of a human body’s energies changes according to the different blood pH values whether in the normal range or not. Human disease treatment should protect and maintain the balance of two incompatibility relations: the loving relationship and the killing relationship. As an application, acupuncture is used to treat limb-girdle muscular dystrophy. 展开更多

Although new drugs and intervention strategies have emerged from recent studies of neuroprotection, compared with haemodynamic and hemorheologic factors, knowledge of vascular factors of ischemic stroke is rather limited. In practical terms, any strategy shown to reduce the incidence of fatal and nonfatal vascular events can be termed "vascular protection", including anti-thrombotic and anti-hypertensive therapies, as well as agents that directly benefit vascular endothelium. Vascular events include myocardial infarction, stroke, and claudication. Factors involved in these events include statins, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, and angiotensin receptor blockers. In traditional Chinese medicine, the principles of "activating blood circulation to remove stasis", "tonifying the kidney and replenishing the essence", "dispelling pathogenic wind and removing obstruction from the meridians", and "warming Yang and promoting water metabolism" are possibly related to vascular protection. However, more evidence is needed to correlate these positive effects with vascular protection. 展开更多

Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)clinical efficacy evaluation runs through the development of TCM and has been progressing so far. With the introduction of evidence-based medicine(EBM)in recent 20 years,TCM clinical efficacy evaluation has developed rapidly, accumulated research and experience, improved the quality and standardization of research, but also gradually found deep-seated deficiencies. In 2019,the China Center for Evidence-based Traditional Chinese Medicine(CCEBTCM)was established, and TCM was included in the 11th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases(ICD-11).In above opportunities for TCM clinical efficacy evaluation,it is necessary to face up to the previous deficiencies,so that the TCM clinical efficacy evaluation can truly reflect the actual clinical practice characteristics, including TCM clinical problems,TCM thinking and TCM diagnosis&treatment mode.Based on the summary and analysis of past research, development concepts are proposed in this article. On the one hand, original concepts of TCM should be confidently paid more attention to the design and implementation of TCM clinical efficacy evaluation to be close to TCM clinical practice. On the other hand,it is necessary to consolidate the foundation of TCM clinical practice before evaluating efficacy.Evaluated object built on TCM ontology knowledge should be demonstrated based on clinical practice, and unknown evaluated object combined with new methods, technologies and concepts should be maturely integrated in clinical practice firstly. 展开更多

Colloidal gold immunochromatographic assay(CGIA)is commonly used for the on-site detection ofβ-agonists that are sometimes used illegally as feed additives in swine diets. However, few studies have evaluated the causes of false-positive results that sometimes occur when applying CGIA in agricultural settings. In this study,we investigated if this false-positive phenomenon is related to the addition of certain traditional Chinese medicines(TCMs)to swine feed.We established and verified an extraction method for TCMs,and then applied CGIA to detectβ-agonists in the extracts of 105 TCMs and in the urine of swine dosed with TCMs,respectively.Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used to validate the results of the urine samples tested positive forβ-agonists using CGIA.The results were also verified using TCMs and colloidal gold test strips produced by different manufacturers. The extracts of Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride,Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium,Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex,Chaenomelis Fructus, and Rhodiolae Crenulatae Radix Et Rhizoma were tested positive forβ-agonists.Meanwhile,the addition of Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium to swine feed resulted in false-positive results forβ-agonists in swine urine. The results provide a new way to explain false-positive CGIA results and provide valuable information for livestock feeding programs. 展开更多

Ischemic brain injury occurs when the metabolic needs of brain tissue cannot be met due to insufficient blood supply to the brain. It is one of the main causes of death and adult disability worldwide. The recurrence rate of ischemic brain injury is high.It places a heavy economic burden on families and society, and seriously affects human health and quality of life.In traditional Chinese medicine, ischemic stroke belongs to the category of“stroke”.The use of traditional Chinese medicine to treat stroke has a long history. After years of experimental research,a large amount of theoretical knowledge and practical experience have been accumulated.Promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis is the basis of traditional Chinese medicine theory on the treatment of ischemic stroke.Commonly used single Chinese medicines include Chuangxiong(Ligusticum chuanxiong hort),Danggui(Angelica sinensis),Danshen(Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge),Honghua(Carthamus tinctorius L.),Mudanpi(Moutan Cortex),and Huangqi(Astragali Radix).Buyang Huanwu decoction,Xinglou Chengqi decoction,Taohong Siwu decoction, and other traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions are believed to have a protective effect against brain damage caused by ischemic stroke. With the development of modern medical technology, the mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine treatments for ischemic brain injury has gradually been explored. This article reviews the mechanisms of traditional Chinese medicine’s protection against ischemic brain injury and its current clinical application. 展开更多
