A Translator’s Feed-Back About the Practice of Pun-Translation-From the Chinese Version of The Life of Napoleon Bonaparte

It has been acknowledged by Chinese translators that in translating English puns the center should be put on the thorough comprehension of the original expression that more often than not has more than one meanings and the flexible handling of conversion from the native language to the target one. Literal translation will often be impossible, annotation redundant, and the restructuring and remaking of new ways that create and maintain balance or similarity in function and value will be more preferred as a possible way-out for pun-translation. Examples attached are from the writer of this article who is also the translator of a published historical book where punning can be found.

A Corpus-Based Study on the Translators’Styles in the English Versions of The True Story of Ah-Q

The True Story of Ah-Q written by Lu Xun has been translated into forty different languages,making great contributions to the external dissemination of Chinese culture.This paper adopts the corpus stylistics method to analyze the translators’styles presented by William A.Lyell and Julia Lovell’s translations of Ah-Q.Based on the self-built comparable corpus of the two translations,the paper investigates and analyzes them from the lexical and sentence level.In terms of vocabulary,the translations are statistically analyzed from the standardized type-token ratio,word frequency,word length and vocabulary density;at the sentence level,the article studies the average sentence lengths and sentence complexity.The first major finding is that Lovell’s vocabulary is richer than that of Lyell,and Lovell’s average word length is longer.Also,the average sentence length of both translations exceeds the original text,and Lovell has the highest average sentence length.Secondly,Lovell prefers to use simple sentences while Lyell prefers complex sentences.Nevertheless,both of them strive to make Lu Xun’s works understandable to foreign readers,thus understanding Chinese culture better.

Translator Stylistics:A Corpus Analysis of Two English Translations of Traditional Chinese Medicine Classic Da Sheng Bian

Da Sheng Bian,a significant work on obstetrics and gynecology that emerged in the early Qing Dynasty,was initially published as“A Treatise on Midwifery”in 1842 by William Lockhart,a British missionary to China.In 1894,John G.Kerr,an American missionary,translated the text as“The Tat Shang Pin”.This paper conducts a comparative study of the two English translations using a self-constructed English-Chinese parallel corpus of Da Sheng Bian.The study explores the translation styles of the two translators by examining the token-types ratio and frequency at the lexical level,mean sentence length at the syntactic level,and the use of conjunctions at the discourse level.The observed differences in translation styles between the two translations are analyzed in relation to the translators’backgrounds and translation strategies.

On social-oriented translator training in colleges and universities

With the deepening of globalization, the demand of translators is on the rise. The upsurge of translation does not mean that there is no any worry in translation teaching, since the translators trained in colleges and universities do not satisfy the social demands. The particularity of translation determines the peculiarity of training pattern, so the present translation teaching is out of date. Thus, the translator training should be oriented according to the social demands in certain degree. From the aspects of current situation, social demands, translation teaching and its reform, this paper aims at exploring the pattern of translator training in the light of social demands.

From the methodological perspective, the thesis summarized leisure tea act, judging-time tea act to map translator's style. Through investigations on all these, the thesis succeeded in confirming the translator's styles and pinpointing cultural identity as essential factors influencing their styles. Hopefully, this could help to provide a new angle of view to make research on translator's style. Complexity Theory, Emergence, and Translation： Educating Translators as Agents of Human Interaction in a Complex Society

This paper sets out to argue the relevance for translation studies of complexity theory. It endeavours to argue, though briefly, that translation can be conceptualized as an emergent concept. It then indicates how theories of emergence in social studies provide new scope to theorise agency. Lastly, it considers the implications of the conceptualization for translator education. The arguments put forward in this paper lay the foundation for a philosophy of translation, i.e., a meta-theory of translation in which translation is viewed both as emerging from particular complex human interactions such as language and as being co-determined by complex contextual factors.

The translator, as the main body of a translation, has been in an invisible and ignored state for a long time. This essay is a research report, which is based on results of grammatical error analysis and interviews with linguistic teachers. These researches are conducted in four language streams, namely, Chinese, Spanish, Korean and Japanese. It will talk about problems identified in all these four language streams, with Chinese as the focus. Although according to various definitions, translation competence includes several parts, which are all required for a professional translator; this essay covers mainly the linguistic competence with tense and aspect issue as the main point. Meanwhile, some major causes of mistakes will be identified, such as interference of mother tongue, lack of second language proficiency. Translation studies has undergone three different periods： the traditional philological period, the modem linguistic period and the contemporary cultural period. Ever since the cultural turn, especially after the introduction of deconstruction into translation, traditional translation theories have been greatly affected. The traditional principle like faithfulness to the source text and the writer has been attacked and the translator＇s subjectivity and creativity have been greatly advocated. Under such circumstances, this paper, however, holds that translation studies should turn to ethics for the messy situation, and translators should be able to identify norms of honor and shame in translation practice.

On Translators and Dictionaries

This paper demonstrates the relationship between translators and dictionaries, and the proper approaches to using dictionaries. Dictionaries play an indispensable role in translation through providing definitions and showing various translation skills. However, translators should handle properly the dictionary definition for each word, and interpret within context with consideration of its target readers and the possible effect the translation will possibly have on them.
