The Development Path of China-South Korea-Japan International Relations From the New Hua-yi System

The Hua-yi system represents an enduring international order in East Asia,dating back nearly two millennia,structured and developed within the framework of Chinese culture.While the contemporary international system predominantly follows the Westphalian model,mainstream international relations theories are primarily grounded in it.However,Western theories have proven inadequate in explaining the longstanding Hua-yi system in East Asia comprehensively.Adopting a positivist stance,this paper undertakes an examination of the theoretical underpinnings of the Hua-yi system through an analysis of its connotations and historical development.It elucidates the system through the lenses of hegemony stability theory and constructivist cultural perspectives.Present-day East Asian nations are urged to engage dialectically with the Hua-yi system and uphold its practices of“cultural soft border”.Amidst the global trend of multi-polarization,East Asian nations should realign with East Asian perspectives and interests,endeavoring to establish a neo-Hua-yi system with responsibility at its core.

Research Progress on MEF2B Gene in Human and Animals

Myocyte enhancer factor 2B （MEF2B） gene belongs to myocyte enhancer factor 2 （MEF2） gene family. They are all widely expressed in muscle and nerve tissues of human and animals. MEF2B plays an important role in the growth of muscle, development and differentiation of nerve system and liver fibrosis. This re- view mainly focused on the structural characteristics, tissue distribution, biological functions and research progress of MEF2B gene in human and animals.

Contributions of Fuqing ZHANG to Predictability,Data Assimilation,and Dynamics of High Impact Weather:A Tribute

This article reviews Fuqing ZHANG’s contributions to mesoscale atmospheric science,from research to mentoring to academic service,over his 20-year career.His fundamental scientific contributions on predictability,data assimilation,and dynamics of high impact weather,especially gravity waves and tropical cyclones,are highlighted.His extremely generous efforts to efficiently transmit to the community new scientific knowledge and ideas through mentoring,interacting,workshop organizing,and reviewing are summarized.Special appreciation is given to his tremendous contributions to the development of mesoscale meteorology in China and the education of Chinese graduate students and young scientists.

British Clocks in Eighteenth-Century China:Presents,Tribute,or Trade?

It is commonly believed that most European clocks that reached China before the nineteenth century were sent to the emperor as diplomatic presents from European rulers,or were given to Chinese officials by European merchants in attempts to improve trading conditions.Although such presents had been given in earlier times,British records show that,by the eighteenth century when the export of clocks to China reached its height,most clocks,including the finest,reached China as private trade goods.Once in Canton(Guangzhou),the best clocks were bought by local Chinese officials for inclusion in their annual tribute to the emperor and senior members of the government in Beijing,where many of these clocks survive in the former imperial collection.

The Supportive Shipping Policies in Late Qing Dynasty： A Comparative Study between China and Foreign Countries

This study makes a comparison between China and foreign countries about the ＂supportive shipping policies＂ in the period of late Qing Dynasty, from 1840 to 1911. After the first opium war, China was forced to open the gate of the old oriental country to the world. As more treaty ports opened, the import and export of goods increased the growing trade that brought about the increased demands of shipping transportation. In the same period, British, France, America, Germany and Japan governing bodies instated various kinds of laws, regulations and other policies encouraging their national shipping companies to grab shipping market share. As a result, foreign steamship companies monopolized Chinese shipping market quickly. Faced with this situation, in 1872, the China Merchants＇ Steam Navigation Company was the fisst steamship company of China to be formed. It was a government-supervised and merchant-managed company, and the Qing Dynasty government took a series of measures to support it under the fierce competition, these measures were different from foreign countries＇.

A review of federated learning in renewable energy applications:Potential,challenges,and future directions

Federated learning has recently emerged as a privacy-preserving distributed machine learning approach.Federated learning enables collaborative training of multiple clients and entire fleets without sharing the involved training datasets.By preserving data privacy,federated learning has the potential to overcome the lack of data sharing in the renewable energy sector which is inhibiting innovation,research and development.Our paper provides an overview of federated learning in renewable energy applications.We discuss federated learning algorithms and survey their applications and case studies in renewable energy generation and consumption.We also evaluate the potential and the challenges associated with federated learning applied in power and energy contexts.Finally,we outline promising future research directions in federated learning for applications in renewable energy.

A priori error estimates of finite volume element method for hyperbolic optimal control problems

In this paper,optimize-then-discretize,variational discretization and the finite volume method are applied to solve the distributed optimal control problems governed by a second order hyperbolic equation.A semi-discrete optimal system is obtained.We prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution to the semidiscrete optimal system and obtain the optimal order error estimates in L ∞(J;L 2)-and L ∞(J;H 1)-norm.Numerical experiments are presented to test these theoretical results.

The"Chinese World Order"Encounters the"East Asian World Order"—Post-War Japanese Historians'Debates on the Tribute System

In this paper,I trace the post-war Japanese genealogy of studies on China's tribute system(imperial China's relatively tolerant approach to its foreign relations)in relation to the English-language work of historian John King Fairbank(1907-91).I emphasize that,together with the sporadic Chinese studies into China's tribute system prior to the 1950s,it was the post-war research of Japanese historians that inspired Fairbank,who,in turn,further stimulated critical debates on the topic in Japan.I first concentrate on post-war Japanese debates concerning an"East Asian world order"based on a"system of investiture/tribute."This notion,developed by the Japanese historian Nishijima Sadao in 1962,precisely corresponds to Fairbank's 1941 understanding of the"tribute system"or"Confucian world-order,"but contrasts with Fairbank's later,controversial understanding of a"Chinese world order"as proposed in 1968.In the second part of this paper,I introduce Japanese historian Hamashita Takeshi's 1980s and 1990s arguments on the"tribute trade system"as representative of the younger generation within this genealogy,contrasting it with the work of Immanuel Wallerstein and Andre Gunder Frank.In the third part,Ⅰlocate this Japanese genealogy within the wider historical context of post-war Japanese intellectual cultural politics.This means that I examine Japanese historians'arguments both from the angle of historiography and from the perspective of post-war Japanese intellectual history.

Restoring p53 in cancer:the promises and the challenges

A tribute to Dr Arnold J.Levine This perspective was written in celebration of Dr Arnold J.Levine's 80th birthday.I chose to write this prospective about restoration of p53 activity in tumors for two reasons:Arnie (as we all know him) has become interested in restoring p53 activity in tumor cells and such a review did not exist.Amie was also my postdoctoral advisor and writing this perspective is just a small tribute for the huge impact he has had on my research career (and that of many others),from supporting me when I left his laboratory for a faculty position before I had even published a paper,to serving as a sounding board for numerous ideas.

David Neely was an internationally recognised scientist who formed collaborations and friendships across the world. His passion for his work always shone through. He always made time for early-career scientists and became a mentor and supervisor to many. He was an active Editorial Board Member of the international journal High Power Laser Science and Engineering. Sadly, David was taken from us much too early. In this Editorial we pay tribute to his work through his publications in the journal.
