As a typical nonlinear wave,forward-leaning waves can be frequently encountered in the near-shore areas, which can impact coastal sediment transport significantly.Hence,it is of significance to describe the characteristics of the boundary layer beneath forward-leaning waves accurately, especially for the turbulent boundary layer. In this work, the linearized turbulent boundary layer model with a linear turbulent viscosity coefficient is applied, and the novel expression of the near-bed orbital velocity that has been worked out by the authors for forward-leaning waves of arbitrary forward-leaning degrees is further used to specify the free stream boundary condition of the bottom boundary layer. Then,a variable transformation is found so as to make the equation of the turbulent boundary layer model be solved analytically through a modified Bessel function.Consequently,an explicit analytical solution of the turbulent boundary layer beneath forward-leaning waves is derived by means of variable separation and variable transformation. The analytical solutions of the velocity profile and bottom shear stress of the turbulent boundary layer beneath forward-leaning waves are verified by comparing the present analytical results with typical experimental data available in the previous literature. 展开更多

Turbulence in the nocturnal boundary layer(NBL)is still not well characterized, especially over complex underlying surfaces.Herein, gradient tower data and eddy covariance data collected by the Beijing 325-m tower were used to better understand the differentiating characteristics of turbulence regimes and vertical turbulence structure of urban the NBL.As for heights above the urban canopy layer(UCL),the relationship between turbulence velocity scale(VTKE)and wind speed(V)was consistent with the“HOckey-Stick”(HOST)theory proposed for a relatively flat area.Four regimes have been identified according to urban nocturnal stable boundary layer.Regime 1 occurs where local shear plays a leading role for weak turbulence under the constraint that the wind speed V<VT(threshold wind speed).Regime 2 is determined by the existence of strong turbulence that occurs when V>VT and is mainly driven by bulk shear.Regime 3 is identified by the existence of moderate turbulence when upside-down turbulence sporadic bursts occur in the presence of otherwise weak turbulence.Regime 4 is identified as buoyancy turbulence, when V>VT,and the turbulence regime is affected by a combination of local wind shear, bulk shear and buoyancy turbulence. The turbulence activities demonstrated a weak thermal stratification dependency in regime 1,for which within the UCL,the turbulence intensity was strongly affected by local wind shear when V<VT.This study further showed typical examples of different stable boundary layers and the variations between turbulence regimes by analyzing the evolution of wind vectors.Partly because of the influence of large-scale motions, the power spectral density of vertical velocity for upsidedown structure showed an increase at low frequencies. The upside-down structures were also characterized by the highest frequency of the stable stratifications in the higher layer. 展开更多

The flat-plate turbulent boundary layer at Reτ=1140 is manipulated using a spanwise array of bidirectional dielectric barrier discharge(DBD)plasma actuators.Based on the features of no moving mechanical parts in the DBD plasma control technology and hot-wire anemometer velocity measurements,a novel convenient method of local drag reduction(DR)measurement is proposed by measuring the single-point velocity within the linear region of the viscous sublayer. We analyze the premise of using the method, and the maximum effective measurement range of-73.1%<DR<42.2%is obtained according to the experimental environment in this work. The local drag decreases downstream of the center of two adjacent upper electrodes and increases downstream of the upper electrodes. The magnitude of the local DR increases with increasing voltage and decreases as it moves away from the actuators. For the spanwise position in between, the streamwise distribution of the local DR is very dependent on the voltage. The variable-interval time-average detection results reveal that all bursting intensities are reduced compared to the baseline, and the amount of reduction is comparable to the absolute values of the local DR.Compared with previous results,we infer that the control mechanism is that many meandering streaks are combined together into single stabilized streaks. 展开更多

The low-Reynolds-number full developed turbulent flow in channels is simulated using large eddy simulation(LES)method with the preconditioned algorithm and the dynamic subgrid-scale model, with a given disturbance in inlet boundary, after a short development section. The inlet Reynolds number based on momentum thickness is 670.The computed results show good agreement with direct numerical simulation(DNS),which include root mean square fluctuated velocity distribution and average velocity distribution. It is also found that the staggered phenomenon of the coherent structures is caused by sub-harmonic.The results clearly show the formation and evolution of horseshoe vortex in the turbulent boundary layer, including horseshoe vortex structure with a pair of streamwise vortexes and one-side leg of horseshoe vortex.Based on the results, the development of the horseshoe-shaped coherent structures is analyzed in turbulent boundary layer. 展开更多

Classical turbulent K closure theory of the atmospheric boundary layer assumes that the vertical turbulent transport flux of any macroscopic quantity is equivalent to that quantity's vertical gradient transport flux. But a cross coupling between the thermodynamic processes and the dynamic processes in the atmospheric system is demonstrated based on the Curier-Prigogine principle of cross coupling of linear thermodynamics. The vertical turbulent transportation of energy and substance in the atmospheric boundary layer is related not only to their macroscopic gradient but also to the convergence and the divergence movement. The transportation of the convergence or divergence movement is important for the atmospheric boundary layer of the heterogeneous underlying surface and the convection boundary layer. Based on this, the turbulent transportation in the atmospheric boundary layer, the energy budget of the heterogeneous underlying surface and the convection boundary layer, and the boundary layer parameterization of land surface processes over the heterogeneous underlying surface are studied. This research offers clues not only for establishing the atmospheric boundary layer theory about the heterogeneous underlying surface, but also for overcoming the difficulties encountered recently in the application of the atmospheric boundary layer theory. 展开更多

Direct numerical simulation of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer over a compliant wall with anisotropic wall material properties is performed. The Reynolds number varies from 300 to approximately 860 along the streamwise direction, based on the external flow velocity and the momentum thickness. Eight typical cases are selected for numerical investigation under the guidance of the monoharmonic analysis. The instantaneous flow fields exhibit the traveling wavy motion of the compliant wall, and the frequency-wavenumber power spectrum of wall pressure fluctuation is computed to quantify the mutual influence of the wall compliance and the turbulent flow at different wave numbers. It is shown that the Reynolds shear stress and the pressure fluctuation are generally enhanced by the wall compliance with the parameters considered in the present study. A dynamical decomposition of the skin-friction coefficient is derived, and a new term (CW) appears due to the wall-induced Reynolds shear stress. The influence of the anisotropic compliant wall motion on the turbulent boundary layer through the wall-induced negative Reynolds shear stress is discussed. To elucidate the underlying mechanism, the budget analysis of the Reynolds stresses transportation is further carried out. The impact of the wall compliance on the turbulent flow is disclosed by examining the variations of the diffusion and velocity-pressure correlation terms. It is shown that increase of the Reynolds stresses inside the flow domain is caused by enhancement of the velocity-pressure correlation term, possibly through the long-range influence of the wall compliance on the pressure field, rather than diffusion of the wall-induced Reynolds shear stress into the fluid flow. 展开更多

The effect of micro-bubbles on the turbulent boundary layer in the channel flow with Reynolds numbers (Re) ranging from 0.87 × 105 to 1.23 × 105 is experimentally studied by using particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. The microbubbles are produced by water electrolysis. The velocity profiles,Reynolds stress and instantaneous structures of the boundary layer, with and without micro-bubbles,are measured and analyzed. The presence of micro-bubbles changes the streamwise mean velocity of the fluid and increases the wall shear stress. The results show that micro-bubbles have two effects, buoyancy and extrusion, which dominate the flow behavior of the mixed fluid in the turbulent boundary layer. The buoyancy effect leads to upward motion that drives the fluid motion in the same direction and, therefore, enhances the turbulence intense of the boundary layer. While for the extrusion effect, the presence of accumulated micro-bubbles pushes the flow structures in the turbulent boundary layer away from the near-wall region. The interaction between these two effects causes the vorticity structures and turbulence activity to be in the region far away from the wall. The buoyancy effect is dominant when the Re is relatively small, while the extrusion effect plays a more important role when Re rises. 展开更多

The present experimental work focuses on a new model for space-time correlation and the scale-dependencies of convection velocity and sweep velocity in turbulent boundary layer over a flat wail. A turbulent boundary layer flow at Reo = 2460 is measured by tomographic particle image velocimetry (tomographic PIV). It is demonstrated that arch, cane, and hairpin vortices are dominant in the logarithmic layer. Hairpins and hairpin packets are responsible for the elongated low-momentum zones observed in the instantaneous flow field. The conditionally-averaged coherent structures systemically illustrate the key roles of hairpin vortice in the turbulence dynamic events, such as ejection and sweep events and energy transport. The space-time correlations of instantaneous streamwise fluctuation velocity are calculated and confirm the new elliptic model for the space-time correlation instead of Taylor hypothesis. The convection velocities derived from the space-time correlation and conditionally-averaged method both suggest the scaling with the local mean velocity in the logarithmic layer. Convection velocity result based on Fourier decomposition (FD) shows stronger scale- dependency in the spanwise direction than in streamwise direction. Compared with FD, the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) has a distinct distribution of convection velocity for the large- and small-scales which are separated in light of their contributions of turbulent kinetic energy. 展开更多

A kind of fast changing structure was observed. That is a spot in which all the hydrogen bubbles vanish much faster than in other regions. This investigation verified that dark-spot is formed by a strong sweep from outer layer. Inside a dark-spot the local instantaneous flow speed might be four times of its neighboring high-speed streaks. Comparing with the low/high speed streaks, both dark-spot and the vortical structures around it are changing very fast. Around dark-spot intensive shear layers are formed and indications of the generation of small-scale structures could be observed. 展开更多

Time-resolved particle image velocimetry(TRPIV) experiments are performed to investigate the coherent structure's performance of riblets in a turbulent boundary layer(TBL) at a friction Reynolds number of 185. To visualize the energetic large-scale coherent structures(CSs) over a smooth surface and riblets, the proper orthogonal decomposition(POD) and finite-time Lyapunov exponent(FTLE) are used to identify the CSs in the TBL. Spatial-temporal correlation is implemented to obtain the characters and transport properties of typical CSs in the FTLE fields. The results demonstrate that the generic flow structures, such as hairpin-like vortices, are also observed in the boundary layer flow over the riblets, consistent with its smooth counterpart. Low-order POD modes are more sensitive to the riblets in comparison with the high-order ones, and the wall-normal movement of the most energy-containing structures are suppressed over riblets. The spatial correlation analysis of the FTLE fields indicates that the evolution process of the hairpin vortex over riblets are inhibited. An apparent decrease of the convection velocity over riblets is noted, which is believed to reduce the ejection/sweep motions associated with high shear stress from the viscous sublayer. These reductions exhibit inhibition of momentum transfer among the structures near the wall in the TBL flows. 展开更多

With a piezoelectric (PZT) oscillator, the predetermined controls of the turbulent boundary layer (TBL) are effective in reducing the drag force. The stream-wise velocities in the TBL are accurately measured downstream of the oscillator driven by an adjustable power source. The mean velocity profiles in the inner and outer scales are reported and the skin friction stresses with different voltage parameters are compared. Reduction of integral spatial scales in the inner region below y+ of 30 suggests that the oscillator at work breaks up the near-wall stream-wise vortices responsible for high skin friction. For the TBL at Reo of 2183, the controls with a frequency of 160Hz are superior among our experiments and a relative drag reduction rate of 26.83% is exciting. Wavelet analyses provide a reason why the controls with this special frequency perform best. 展开更多

A numerical analysis of the log-law behavior for the turbulent boundary layer of a wall-bounded flow is performed over a flat plate immersed in three nanofluids(Zn O-water,SiO_(2)-water,TiO_(2)-water).Numerical simulations using CFD code are employed to investigate the boundary layer and the hydrodynamic flow.To validate the current numerical model, measurement points from published works were used, and the compared results were in good compliance.Simulations were carried out for the velocity series of 0.04,0.4 and 4 m/s and nanoparticle concentrations0.1% and 5%.The influence of nanoparticles’ concentration on velocity, temperature profiles, wall shear stress, and turbulent intensity was investigated. The obtained results showed that the viscous sub-layer,the buffer layer, and the loglaw layer along the potential-flow layer could be analyzed based on their curving quality in the regions which have just a single wall distance. It was seen that the viscous sub-layer is the biggest area in comparison with other areas.Alternatively, the section where the temperature changes considerably correspond to the thermal boundary layer’s thickness goes a downward trend when the velocity decreases. The thermal boundary layer gets deep away from the leading edge. However,a rise in the volume fraction of nanoparticles indicated a minor impact on the shear stress developed in the wall.In all cases, the thickness of the boundary layer undergoes a downward trend as the velocity increases, whereas increasing the nanoparticle concentrations would enhance the thickness.More precisely, the log layer is closed with log law,and it is minimal between Y^(+)=50 and Y^(+)=95.The temperature for nanoparticle concentration φ=5%is higher than that for φ=0.1%,in boundary layers, for all studied nanofluids. However,it is established that the behavior is inverted from the value of Y^(+)=1 and the temperature for φ =0.1% is more important than the case of φ =5%.For turbulence intensity peak, this peak exists at Y^(+)=100 for v=4 m/s,Y^(+)=10 for v=0.4 m/s and Y^(+)=8 for v=0.04 m/s. 展开更多

It is a very difficult task to develop a method of reducing turbulent boundary layer drag. However,in recent years, plasma flow control technology has demonstrated huge potential in friction drag reduction. To further investigate this issue,a smooth plate model was designed as a testing object arranged with a bidirectional dielectric-barrier-discharge(DBD)plasma actuator. In addition, measurement of skin friction drag was achieved by applying hot wire anemometry to obtain the velocity distribution of the turbulent boundary layer.A method of quantifying the friction drag effect was adopted based on the Spalding formula fitted with the experiment data. When plasma actuation was conducted,a velocity defect occurred at the two measuring positions, compared with the no plasma control condition;this means that the DBD plasma actuation could reduce the drag successfully in the downstream of the actuator. Moreover, drag reduction caused by backward actuation was slightly more efficient than that caused by forward actuation. With an increasing distance from plasma actuation, the drag-reduction effect could become weaker.Experimental results also show that the improvement of drag-reduction efficiency using a DBD plasma actuator can achieve about 8.78%in the local region of the experimental flat model. 展开更多

An area of protruding feathers found around the beak of many penguin species is thought to induce a turbulent boun~dary layer whilst swimming. Hydrodynamic tests on a model Humboldt penguin, Spheniscus humboldti, suggest that induced turbulence causes a significant reduction in boundary layer height, flow separation, and an average of 31 % reduction in drag (1.0 m/s to 4.5 m/s). Visualisation of surface flow showed it to follow the body profile, over the feet and tail, before separating. Movement of the feet in swimming penguins correlates with steering of the bird. Induced turbulence may therefore further increase swimming efficiency by reducing the amount of foot movement required to direct the swimming bird. 展开更多

Based on the measurement of the velocity field in the convective boundary layer (CBL) in a convection water tank with the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique, this paper studies the characteristics of the CBL turbulent velocity in a modified convection tank. The experiment results show that the velocity distribution in the mixed layer clearly possesses the characteristics of the CBL thermals, and the turbulent eddies can be seen obviously. The comparison of the vertical distribution of the turbulent velocity variables indicates that the modeling in the new tank is better than in the old one. The experiment data show that the thermal's motion in the entrainment zone sometimes fluctuates obviously due to the intermittence of turbulence. Analyses show that this fluctuation can influence the agreement of the measurement data with the parameterization scheme, in which the convective Richardson number is used to characterize the entrainment zone depth. The normalized square velocity wi^2/w*^2. at the top of the mixed layer seems to be time-dependent, and has a decreasing trend during the experiments. This implies that the vertical turbulent velocity at the top of the mixed layer may not be proportional to the convective velocity (w*). 展开更多

This work investigates the active control of a fully developed turbulent boundary layer by a submerged synthetic jet actuator. The impacts of the control are explored by measuring the streamwise velocities using particle image velocimetry, and reduction of the skin-friction drag is observed in a certain range downstream of the orifice. The coherent structure is defined and extracted using a spatial two-point correlation function, and it is found that the synthetic jet can efficiently reduce the streamwise scale of the coherent structure.Proper orthogonal decomposition analysis reveals that large-scale turbulent kinetic energy is significantly attenuated with the introduction of a synthetic jet.The conditional averaging results show that the induction effect of the prograde vortex on the low-speed fluid in a large-scale fluctuation velocity field is deadened, thereby suppressing the bursting process near the wall. 展开更多

A numerical simulation is performed to find out a key vortical structure in the laminar-turbulent transition. A low-speed streak is generated inside a laminar boundary layer using an isolated cuboid roughness, aimed at providing an environment unstable to outer disturbances. Then, a short duration jet is issued into the boundary layer. When the jet velocity is low, some vortices appear in the boundary layer, but the transition of the boundary layer does not take place. However, when the jet velocity exceeds a certain threshold, two vortices newly appear above the elongated legs of a V-shaped vortex and only one of them is stretched and survives. After that, vortices are generated one after another around the survived one. By comparing the decayed and the survived vortices, it is found that the difference in their heights is the key characteristic which leads to the transition. 展开更多
