Ulysses is Joyce's optimum work, which takes 3 Dublin characters' experience in one day as the main line to show the paralysation and crisis of the whole Western society, people's emptiness on their minds, loneliness on their feelings and labefaction on their spirits, also, it showed the inextricable perplexity. To treat the theme of inextricable perplexity, this paper is trying to set about the inextricable Catholic Church and identity problems, with the ideas of Alick West-the outstanding English Marxist literary critic of the 20th century.展开更多

An intertextual study of these texts shows that Tennyson's Ulysses resonates with Homer's Iliad and Odyssey in a profound and multidimensional way. The former is largely informed by the latter in setting, event, perception of death, heroism and so forth. A sequel to the Homeric epics, Tennyson's Ulysses however also ingeniously rewrites the fate of Achilles, thus adding a more humanistic dimension to the classical texts.展开更多

This is not mentioned in Homer, but in Fabulae by Gaius Julius Hyginus. Similarly, Hamlet put on an "antic disposition" after the ghost exhorted him to kill King Claudius. In these two cases taken from mythology and literature, and pertaining to the Classical period and the Elizabethan age respectively, intelligent characters put on the pretence of madness, in their battle with society though they are in control of their senses. It is the aim of this paper to examine the dynamics of reason and non-reason when combined and brought so close to one another, that they could be easily confounded, in light of Derrida's reading of Descartes' formulations about reason. Since the two examined works pertain to the Classical and Elizabethan ages respectively, the paper will shed light on the historical background of madness in these periods to give a broader perspective of reason and madness in these works.展开更多

During its first rapid pole-to-pole transit from September 1994 to June 1995, Ulysses observed a fast speed flow with magnitude reaching 700—800 km/s at high latitudinal region except 20°area near the ecliptic plane where the velocity is 300—400 km/s. The observations also showed a sudden jump of the velocity across the two regions. In this note, based on the characteristic and representative observations of the solar magnetic field and K-coronal polarized brightness, the large-scale solar wind structure mentioned above is reproduced by using a three-dimensional MHD model. The numerical results are basically consistent with those of Ulysses observations. Our results also show that the distributions of magnetic field and plasma number density on the solar source surface play an important role in governing this structure. Furthermore, the three-dimensional MHD model used here has a robust ability to simulate this kind of large-scale wind structure.展开更多

These problems are analyzed as special cases of a problem that could arise in any profession, a problem easily resolved using a theory of professional ethics (more or less) absent from medical ethics until now though common outside. Employing a physician--rather than an ordinary officer, some other kind of healer, or scientist--is to enter a sort of "Ulysses contract" requiring the physician's professional standards to preempt obligations otherwise applying to an employee. In this way, the article also illustrates the benefits that might accrue to medical ethics from drawing (more than is now common) on other fields of practical ethics.展开更多
