The US Sate Department has always professed to be a "Judge of Human Rights in the World." Year upon year, it issues country-specific human rights reports, accusing more than 190 countries and regions, including China, of their human fights conditions. Yet it tums a blind eye to its own. It is just behind the "Statue of Liberty’" that hides serious infringements upon human rights. 展开更多

BACKGROUND: We compare educational environments(i.e. physical, emotional and intellectual experiences) of emergency medicine(EM) residents training in the United States of America(USA) and Saudi Arabia(SA).METHODS: A cross-sectional survey study was conducted using an adapted version of the validated Postgraduate Hospital Educational Environment Measure(PHEEM) survey instrument from April 2015 through June 2016 to compare educational environments in all emergency medicine residency programs in SA and three selected programs in the USA with a history of training Saudi physicians. Overall scores were compared across programs, and for subscales(autonomy, teaching, and social Support), using chi-squared, t-tests, and analysis of variance.RESULTS: A total of 219 surveys were returned for 260 residents across six programs(3 SA, 3 USA), with a response rate of 84%. Program-specific response rates varied from 79%–100%. All six residencies were qualitatively rated as "more positive than negative but room for improvement". Quantitative PHEEM scores for the USA programs were significantly higher: 118.7 compared to 109.9 for SA, P=0.001. In subscales, perceptions of social support were not different between the two countries(P=0.243); however, role autonomy(P<0.001) and teaching(P=0.005) were better in USA programs. There were no significant differences by post-graduate training year.CONCLUSION: EM residents in all three emergency medicine residency programs in SA and the three USA programs studied perceive their training as high quality in general, but with room for improvements. USA residency programs scored higher in overall quality. This was driven by more favorable perceptions of role autonomy and teaching. Understanding how residents perceive their programs may help drive targeted quality improvement efforts. 展开更多

Nursing education in the United States began in the 1870s with hospital training schools modeled after the Nightingale plan. Presently there are three educational paths that students may take to become a registered nurse (RN). These are the baccalaureate degree (BS), the associate degree (AD) and the diploma. Accelerated nursing programs are also available for people who have a baccalaureate degree in another field. Nursing education and nursing practice in the United States is regulated by each of the 50 states. The focus of nursing education is the preparation of nurses who use critical thinking skills to provide comprehensive patient-centered care to a variety of clients. It is expected that nurses will function using evidence-based practice in a culturally competent, safe manner. Nursing schools must be approved by the state in which they exist. In addition to this, most nursing schools are also accredited, a voluntary process that is done by a non-governmental association. All graduates take the same licensing exam, a computer adaptive test that is from 75 to 265 items long educated graduates were first time test takers; 85.5% passed the exam. Trends in nursing education In 2008 almost 120,000 US include a focus on evidence based practice, an emphasis on safety and quality, patient education and management of chronic conditions, genetics and genomics and the use of simulation in nursing education 展开更多

Purpose: In this contribution, we want to detect the document type profiles of the three prestigious journals Nature, Science, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States (PNAS) with regard to two levels: journal and country. Design/methodology/approach: Using relative values based on fractional counting, we investigate the distribution of publications across document types at both the journal and country level, and we use (cosine) document type profile similarity values to compare pairs of publication years within countries. Findings: Nature and Science mainly publish Editorial Material, Article, News Item and Letter, whereas the publications of PNAS are heavily concentrated on Article. The shares of Article for Nature and Science are decreasing slightly from 1999 to 2014, while the corresponding shares of Editorial Material are increasing. Most studied countries focus on Article and Letter in Nature, but on Letter in Science and PNAS. The document type profiles of some of the studied countries change to a relatively large extent over publication years. Research limitations: The main limitation of this research concerns the Web of Science classification of publications into document types. Since the analysis of the paper is based on document types of Web of Science, the classification in question is not free from errors, and the accuracy of the analysis might be affected.Practical implications: Results show that Nature and Science are quite diversified with regard to document types. In bibliometric assessments, where publications in Nature and Science play a role, other document types than Article and Review might therefore be taken into account. Originality/value: Results highlight the importance of other document types than Article and Review in Nature and Science. Large differences are also found when comparing the country document type profiles of the three journals with the corresponding profiles in all Web of Science journals. 展开更多

COVID-19 virus has been spreading worldwide for more than a year.At present, the situation of the new crown pneumonia epidemic remains full of tension and uncertainty. It is of concern is that the worst outbreak in the world is in the United States. The total number of confirmed new cases of COVID-19 and the total number of new deaths in the United States have entered their second and third cyclical peaks since the White House announced the“Open America Again”guidelines on April 16,2020,and the start of the US presidential election season in August 2020.This paper combines the generalized exponential model(EXPM)with Chebyshev polynomials to develop a special generalized growth model(GGM)to predict the total number of daily new confirmed cases and the total number of new deaths in the United States for three periods under a 14-day sensitivity regression model. In this paper, the US epidemic is divided into three periods from early January 2020 to early January 2021,and three forecasts are made for the three periods. The first two prediction periods have already occurred and the predictions match well with known results, and the third period predicts that the total number of new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and the total number of new deaths in the United States will fall to a minimum level by next July, when the supply of COVID-19 vaccine has already begun. The results suggest that the“Open America Again”policy and the events of the 2020 US presidential election season have contributed to the worsening of the COVID-19 in the United States. 展开更多

Marshall Plan is an important declaration that dominated world economy and politics after the World War II. It is also evidence that policy of the United States of America to make for its internal politics between two world wars was abandoned and it was intended to dominate world politics. Likewise, it can be considered as the smoking gun for power loss of continental Europe, including England, against the Soviet Union. When Turkey had to find its way into Western alliance in this new period divided into two poles and called as "Cold War", it intended to enter into economic acquis formed by Marshall Plan. Turkey, in the process to prevent the spread of communism against the Soviet Union that started mainly by Truman Doctrine, was of the first priority status by the USA just like Greece. It can be said that Turkish economy made an important progress to move into liberal system from its statist structure through Marshall Plan. Accession process to European Union integration mandated by the USA was started by Republican People's Party (CHP) and it was also continued in Democratic Party period with liberal program that took over the power as a result of elections in Turkey. Although Marshall Plan created economic added value in Turkey at the beginning, it could not create a sustainable welfare process as consultants coming from the USA had insisted on unilateral economic policies and Turkey was directed towards military spending due to being seen mainly as a buffer state against the Soviet Union and Middle East. It can be also said that arrangements arising from double standards in the application compared to European countries caused economic instabilities in the long run. 展开更多

Auditor independence provisions enshrined in the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) were promulgated in 2002 in response to the Errron-Anderson scandal leading to a diminution of trust in the audit profession. In seeking to regulate auditor independence in the name of investor protection, SOX has been heralded as "ground-breaking" public interest reform. Ironically, when one considers the substance of these reforms and contrasts them with the situation prevailing in South Africa, a different impression results. Despite the fact that South Africa is classified as a "developing" nation and one which has only recently transitioned to democracy, many of the auditor independence principles legislated under SOX have been part of generally accepted practice in South Africa since the 1950s. Accordingly, SOX may not be the progressive example of auditor regulation that it is generally perceived to be. 展开更多

There is a vast colony of microbes in the human gut that not only maintains intestinal function but also has intricate links to the brain via the “microbiota-gut-brain” (MGB) axis. The axis now has been demonstrated to have implications for the treatment of several neuro-psychological illnesses, including Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), a condition that affects a person’s ability to connect socially and communicate effectively. Previously thought to be a rare disorder, it is now thought to affect 1 in 9 individuals in the United States. Unfortunately, there is not FDA-approved drug for the primary symptoms of AD, and the current cognitive-behavioral therapy procedures for the condition are time-consuming and expensive. Scientists are currently investigating the MGB axis to identify potential treatment targets to reduce AD symptoms. This review aims to highlight the functioning of the MGB axis;research into this dysfunction may effectively demonstrate the need of innovative AD treatment approaches, ranging from probiotics and dietary changes to more contemporary techniques like fecal transplants, vagal nerve stimulation, and gene therapy. Not simply behavioral intervention therapy, but also microbes, may hold the key to curing AD. 展开更多
