This paper investigates the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) boundary layer flow of an incompressible upper-convected Maxwell (UCM) fluid over a porous stretching surface. Similarity transformations are used to reduce the governing partial differential equations into a kind of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The nonlinear prob- lem is solved by using the successive Taylor series linearization method (STSLM). The computations for velocity components are carried out for the emerging parameters. The numerical values of the skin friction coefficient are presented and analyzed for various parameters of interest in the problem. 展开更多

In this paper, a least-squares finite element method for the upper-convected Maxell (UCM) fluid is proposed. We first linearize the constitutive and momentum equations and then apply a least-squares method to the linearized version of the viscoelastic UCM model. The L2 least-squares functional involves the residuals of each equation multiplied by proper weights. The corresponding homogeneous functional is equivalent to a natural norm. The error estimates of the finite element solution are analyzed when the conforming piecewise polynomial elements are used for the unknowns. 展开更多

The present study examines the effect of induced magnetic field and convectiveboundary condition on magnetohydrodynamic(MHD)stagnation point flow and heat transfer dueto upper-convected Maxwell fluid over a stretching sheet in the presence of nanoparticles.Boundary layer theory is used to simplify the equation of motion, induced magnetic field, energyand concentration which results in four coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations.Thestudy takes into account the effect of Brownian motion and thermophoresis parameters.Thegoverning equations and their associated boundary conditions are initially cast into dimensionlessfonm by similarity variables. The resulting system of equations is then solved numerically usingfourth order Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg method along with shooting technique. The solution for thegoverning equations depends on parameters such as,magnetic, velocity ratio parameter B,Biotnumber Bi,Prandtl number Pr,Lewis number Le,Brownian motion Nb,reciprocal of magnetic Prandtl number A,the thermophoresis parameter Nt,and Maxwell parameter β.The numerical results are obtained for velocity, temperature, induced magnetic field andconcentration profiles as well as skin friction coefficient, the local Nusselt number andSherwood number. The results indicate that the skin friction coefficient, the local Nusseltnumber and Sherwood number decrease with an increase in B and M parameters. Moreover, local Sherwood number-φ'(O)decreases with an increase in convective parameter Bi,but the local Nusselt number-φ'(0)increases with an increase in Bi.The results are displayed both ingraphical and tabular form to illustrate the effect of the governing parameters on thedimensionless velocity, induced magnetic field, temperature and concentration. The numericalresults are compared and found to be in good agreement with the previously published resultson special cases of the problem. 展开更多

The fractional calculus approach in the constitutive relationship model of viscoelastic fluid is introduced. The flow near a wall suddenly set in mo- tion is studied for a non-Newtonian viscoelastic fluid with the fractional Maxwell model.Exact solutions of velocity and stress are obtained by using the discrete in- verse Laplace transform of the sequential fractional derivatives. It is found that the effect of the fractional orders in the constitutive relationship on the flow field is signif- icant. The results show that for small times there are appreciable viscoelastic effects on the shear stress at the plate, for large times the viscoelastic effects become weak. 展开更多

A numerical analysis is presented for the oscillatory flow of Maxwell fluid in a rectangular straight duct subjected to a simple harmonic periodic pressure gradient. The numerical solutions are obtained by a finite difference scheme method. The stability of this finite difference scheme method is discussed. The distributions of the velocity and phase difference are given numerically and graphically. The effects of the Reynolds number, relaxation time, and aspect ratio of the cross section on the oscillatory flow are investigated. The results show that when the relaxation time of the Maxwell model and the Reynolds number increase, the resonance phenomena for the distributions of the velocity and phase difference enhance. 展开更多

The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) graphene-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) nanofluid flow between two squeezing parallel plates in the presence of thermal radiation effects is investigated. The energy efficiency of the system via the Bejan number is studied extensively. The governing partial differential equations are converted by using the similarity transformations into a set of coupled ordinary differential equations. The set of these converted equations is solved by using the differential transform method (DTM). The entropy generation in terms of the Bejan number, the coefficient of skin-friction, and the heat transfer rate is furthermore investigated under the effects of various physical parameters of interest. The present study shows that the Bejan number, the velocity and thermal profiles, and the rate of heat transfer decrease with a rise in the Deborah number De while the skin-friction coefficient increases. It is also observed that the entropy generation due to frictional forces is higher than that due to thermal effects. Thus, the study bears the potential application in powder technology as well as in biomedical engineering. 展开更多

The effects of variable fluid properties and variable heat flux on the flow and heat transfer of a non-Newtonian Maxwell fluid over an unsteady stretching sheet in the presence of slip velocity have been studied. The governing differential equations are transformed into a set of coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations and then solved with a numerical technique using appropriate boundary conditions for various physical parameters. The numerical solution for the governing non-linear boundary value problem is based on applying the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method coupled with the shooting technique over the entire range of physical parameters. The effects of various parameters like the viscosity parameter, thermal conductivity parameter, unsteadiness parameter, slip velocity parameter, the Deborah number, and the Prandtl number on the flow and temperature profiles as well as on the local skin-friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number are presented and discussed. Comparison of numerical results is made with the earlier published results under limiting cases. 展开更多

The unsteady flow of an incompressible fractional Maxwell fluid between two infinite coaxial cylinders is studied by means of integral transforms. The motion of the fluid is due to the inner cylinder that applies a time dependent tor- sional shear to the fluid. The exact solutions for velocity and shear stress are presented in series form in terms of some generalized functions. They can easily be particularized to give similar solutions for Maxwell and Newtonian fluids. Fi- nally, the influence of pertinent parameters on the fluid motion, as well as a comparison between models, is highlighted by graphical illustrations. 展开更多

Peristaltic motion induced by a surface acoustic wave of a viscous, compressible and electrically conducting Maxwell fluid in a confined parallel-plane microchannel through a porous medium is investigated in the presence of a constant magnetic field. The slip velocity is considered and the problem is discussed only for the free pumping case. A perturbation technique is employed to analyze the problem in terms of a small amplitude ratio. The phenomenon of a “backward flow” is found to exist in the center and at the boundaries of the channel. In the second order approximation, the net axial velocity is calculated for various values of the fluid parameters. Finally, the effects of the parameters of interest on the mean axial velocity, the reversal flow, and the perturbation function are discussed and shown graphically. We find that in the non-Newtonian regime, there is a possibility of a fluid flow in the direction opposite to the propagation of the traveling wave. This work is the most general model of peristalsis created to date with wide-ranging applications in biological, geophysical and industrial fluid dynamics. 展开更多

This paper introduces a new model for the Fourier law of heat conduction with the time-fractional order to the generalized Maxwell fluid. The flow is influenced by magnetic field, radiation heat, and heat source. A fractional calculus approach is used to establish the constitutive relationship coupling model of a viscoelastic fluid. We use the Laplace transform and solve ordinary differential equations with a matrix form to obtain the velocity and temperature in the Laplace domain. To obtain solutions from the Laplace space back to the original space, the numerical inversion of the Laplace transform is used. According to the results and graphs, a new theory can be constructed. Comparisons of the associated parameters and the corresponding flow and heat transfer characteristics are presented and analyzed in detail. 展开更多

This paper analytically investigates the unsteady peristaltic transport of the Maxwell fluid in a finite tube. The walls of the tube are subjected to the contraction waves that do not cross the stationary boundaries. The analysis is carried out by a long wavelength approximation in the non-dimensional form. The expressions for the axial and radial velocities are derived. The pressures across the wavelength and the tubelength are also estimated. The reflux phenomenon is discussed, which culminates into the determination of the reflux limit. Mathematical formulations are physically interpreted for the flow of masticated food materials such as bread and white eggs in the oesophagus. It is revealed that the Maxwell fluids are favorable to flow in the oesophagus as compared with the Newtonian fluids. This endorses the experimental finding of Takahashi et al. (Takahashi, T., Ogoshi, H., Miyamoto, K., and Yao, M. L. Viscoelastic properties of commercial plain yoghurts and trial foods for swallowing disorders. Rheology, 27, 169- 172 (1999)). It is further revealed that the relaxation time does not affect the shear stress and the reflux limit. It is found that the pressure peaks are identical in the integral case while different in the non-integral case. 展开更多

The property of acoustic guided waves generated in a fluid-filled borehole surrounded by a non-Newtonian (Maxwell) fluid-saturated porous formation with a permeable wall is investigated. The influence of non-Newtonian effects on acoustic guided waves such as Stoneley waves, pseudo-Rayleigh waves, flexural waves, and screw waves propagations in a fluid-filled borehole is demonstrated based on the generalized Biot-Tsiklauri model by calculating their velocity dispersion and attenuation coefficients. The corresponding acoustic waveforms illustrate their properties in time domain. The results are also compared with those based on generalized Biot's theory. The results show that the influence of non-Newtonian effect on acoustic guided wave, especially on the attenuation coefficient of guided wave propagation in borehole is noticeable. 展开更多

The flow is generated by a bidirectional stretching surface. The mathematical formulation is carried out through a boundary layer approach with the heat source/sink, the Brownian motion, and the thermophoresis effects. The newly developed boundary conditions requiring zero nanoparticle mass flux at the boundary are employed in the flow analysis for the Maxwell fluid. The governing nonlinear boundary layer equations through appropriate transformations are reduced to the coupled nonlin- ear ordinary differential system. The resulting nonlinear system is solved. Graphs are plotted to examine the effects of various interesting parameters on the non-dimensional velocities, temperature, and concentration fields. The values of the local Nusselt number are computed and examined numerically. 展开更多

In the investigation, a constant wall mass transfer is considered. With the help of similarity transformations, the governing partial differential equations(PDEs) are converted into a nonlinear self-similar ordinary differential equation(ODE). For the numerical solution of transformed self-similar ODE, the shooting method is applied. The study reveals that the steady flow of Maxwell fluid is possible with a smaller amount of imposed mass suction compared with the viscous fluid flow. Dual solutions for the velocity distribution are obtained. Also, the increase of Deborah number reduces the boundary layer thickness for both solutions. 展开更多

The main focus of this study is to investigate the impact of heat generation/absorption with ramp velocity and ramp temperature on magnetohydrodynamic(MHD)time-dependent Maxwell fluid over an unbounded plate embedded in a permeable medium.Non-dimensional parameters along with Laplace transformation and inversion algorithms are used to find the solution of shear stress, energy, and velocity profile.Recently, new fractional differential operators are used to define ramped temperature and ramped velocity. The obtained analytical solutions are plotted for different values of emerging parameters.Fractional time derivatives are used to analyze the impact of fractional parameters(memory effect)on the dynamics of the fluid. While making a comparison,it is observed that the fractional-order model is best to explain the memory effect as compared to classical models. Our results suggest that the velocity profile decrease by increasing the effective Prandtl number. The existence of an effective Prandtl number may reflect the control of the thickness of momentum and enlargement of thermal conductivity. The incremental value of the M is observed for a decrease in the velocity field, which reflects to control resistive force.Further,it is noted that the Atangana-Baleanu derivative in Caputo sense(ABC)is the best to highlight the dynamics of the fluid. The influence of pertinent parameters is analyzed graphically for velocity and energy profile.Expressions for skin friction and Nusselt number are also derived for fractional differential operators. 展开更多

The Lie symmetry group transformations are used to convert the boundary layer equations into coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The ordinary differential equations are solved numerically by the Bvp4c with MATLAB, which is a collocation method equivalent to the fourth-order mono-implicit Runge-Kutta method. The weakly nonlinear stability of the triple diffusive convection in a Maxwell fluid saturated porous layer is investigated. In some cases, disconnected oscillatory neutral curves ave found to exist, indicating that three critical thermal Darcy-Rayleigh numbers are required to specify the linear instability criteria. However, another distinguishing feature predicted from that of Newtonian fluids is the impossibility of quasi-periodic bifurcation from the rest state. Besides, the co-dimensional two bifurcation points are located in the Darcy-Prandtl number and the stress relaxation parameter plane. It is observed that the value of the stress relaxation parameter defining the crossover between stationary and oscillatory bifurcations decreases when the Darcy-Prandtl number increases. A cubic Landau equation is derived based on the weakly nonlinear stability analysis. It is found that the bifurcating oscillatory solution is either supercritical or subcritical, depending on the choice of the physical parameters. Heat and mass transfers are estimated in terms of time and area-averaged Nusselt numbers. 展开更多
