Background: Chronic paronychia is a chronic inflammatory reaction of the proximal and lateral nail folds of multifactorial in etiology like irritant, bacterial and monilial causes. But housewife work is a major cause of chronic paronychia. Objective: To assess the efficacy and prophylactic effects of Vaseline by occlusion of nail folds in comparison with nystatin ointment and fucidic acid in treatment of housewife chronic paronychia. Patients and Methods: This double, blinded, comparative therapeutic, clinical trial is conducted at the Department of Dermatology-Baghdad Teaching Hospital from May 2010 to May 2011. Eighty female housewife patients with chronic paronychia were included in this trial. They were divided into three groups according to the following therapeutic model: Group A treated by Vaseline consisted of 40 patients;Group B and Group C treated by nystatin ointment, fucidic acid ointment respectively and each group consisted of 20 patients. All demographic points related to the disease were recorded from all patients. Invented score system was applied to assess the severity of disease and the response to therapy. Patients had used therapy twice daily on the proximal and lateral nail folds. Treatment duration was 12 weeks. Results: Group A (Vaseline): The recovery rate after 12 weeks of treatment was 26 (65%) patients, while there was no recovery in 14 (35%) patients. Group B (Nystatin ointment): The recovery rate after 12 weeks was 13 (65%) cases and there was no recovery in 7 (35%) patients. Group C (Fucidic acid ointment): The recovery rate 12 weeks of treatment was 12 (60%) patients and there was no recovery in 8 (40%) patients. The earliest signs of recovery in all groups were decreased in nail fold tenderness, redness, swelling followed by improvement in the nail shape, then decreased in the separation of proximal nail fold from nail bed followed by re-growth of cuticle. There was significant difference in clinical response before and after therapy in all groups (P ≤ 0.0001) while there was no statistical significant difference when the three groups were compared with each other (P = 0.784). Conclusions: Vaseline occlusion therapy of the nail folds in patient with chronic paronychia was enough to induce recovery from the disease and there was no statistical significant difference when compared with nystatin or fucidic acid treatment of chronic paronychia. 展开更多

Lithium metal anode(LMA)is the ultimate"Holy Grail"electrode for next generation high-energy-density batteries.Nevertheless, its instinct high reactivity is a formidable challenge and has intensified side reactions, destabilized the electrode/electrolyte interface and restricted the operating conditions strictly, thus hampering its practical application. Here,we"make up"the Li metal(M-Li)by constructing vaselinecoated layer by a simple dip-coating or casting method. With the chemically stable and hydrophobic vaseline protective layer, the stability of Li towards humid and corrosive atmosphere has been greatly improved. The M-Li guaranteed stable and prolonged cycling life after the anode suffering from corrosion in moist air(relative humidity-65%)or corrosive electrolyte(with 10,000 ppm H2O or S)both in symmetric cells and LiFePO4 full cells. This work illustrates a convenient, economic, and industrial applicable method for stable LMA. 展开更多

In order to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Mentholatumò AP Soft Lotion (APA), which is a Vaseline-based preparation that has been converted to nanoparticles by high-pressure emulsification technology, we conducted a study of 4-week continuous use on the atopic dry skin of patients with minor to moderate atopic dermatitis (AD). The results showed that improvements in the skin findings (dryness and scaling) and itching were observed beginning one week after starting to apply APA and that the symptoms had almost completely resolved at 3 to 4 weeks after the start of application. In addition, a significant increase in the degree of high-frequency conductivity, which is an indicator of the amount of moisture in the stratum corneum, and significant decrease in transepidermal water loss (TEWL) were observed, and improvements in skin functions were observed. The results for overall degree of improvement showed “improvement” or better in 100% of the subjects, and no side effects were observed in any of the cases. Based on the above results, it was concluded that APA is a preparation that has excellent efficacy and safety as skin care for atopic dry skin, in which reduced stratum corneum function is observed in the skin, and as a supplemental method of treatment of AD or treatment method to maintain remissions. 展开更多

Diaper dermatit is among the widely seen inflamatory skin diseases in neonatals and small 0 - 18 month old children. Control of causative agents as well as providing good genital care may prevent or reduce the risk of the disease. The aim of this study is find out the effect of protective genital care on reducing the diaper dermatit development in 0 - 18 months old inpatient 0 - 18 month old children who are using antibiotic. The study was conducted as prospective half-experimetal using control-experimental groups. Our samples comprise of 0 - 18 month old children admitted at Dokuz Eylul University Practical and Research Hospital, pediatric clinic between January and May 2009, 41 0 - 18 month old children as a control group were not under protective genital care, and 42 0 - 18 month old children as an experimental group were under the protecion and using vaseline. The mothers of the experimental group 0 - 18 month old children were given education. All 0 - 18 month old children were followed-up 3 - 7 days and the collected data were evaluated in computer using Pearson’s chisquare, Fisher’s exact chi-square and Yatest-corrected chi-square tests. The diaper dermatit develop- ment ratio was 34.1% in the control group and 7.1% in the experimental group 展开更多
