In this article, the effect of internal flow velocity and functional loads on vortex-induced vibration (VIV) response is investigated. On the basis of the Hamilton principle, a differential equation was derived to describe the motion of a pinned-pinned tensioned spanning pipeline conveying fluid. The VIV response was calculated according to DNV-RP-F105 under different functional loads. The results showed that functional loads influence free spanning pipeline VIV response by changing the natural frequency. Internal flow velocity was found less important for VIV response than other functional load factors, such as effective axial force, because the speed in reality is not high enough to be significant. The research may provide a reference for sensitivity studies of the effect of functional loads on allowable free span lengths.展开更多

During the tests, the cylinder models fitted with and ...A series of experimental tests of passive VIV suppression of an inclined flexible cylinder with round-sectioned helical strakes were carried out in a towing tank. During the tests, the cylinder models fitted with and without helical strakes were towed along the tank. The towing velocity ranged from 0.05 to 1.0 m/s with an interval of 0.05 m/s.Four different yaw angles(a=0°, 15°, 30° and 45°), defined as the angle between the axis of the cylinder and the plane orthogonal of the oncoming flow, were selected in the experiment. The main purpose of present experimental work is to further investigate the VIV suppression effectiveness of round-sectioned helical strakes on the inclined flexible cylinder. The VIV responses of the smooth cylinder and the cylinder with square-sectioned strakes under the same experimental condition were also presented for comparison. The experimental results indicated that the roundsectioned strake basically had a similar effect on VIV suppression compared with the square-sectioned one, and both can significantly reduce the VIV of the vertical cylinder which corresponded to the case of a=0°. But with the increase of yaw angle, the VIV suppression effectiveness of both round-and square-section strakes deteriorated dramatically, the staked cylinder even had a much stronger vibration than the smooth one did in the in-line(IL)direction.展开更多
A prediction model of the deepwater steel catenary riser VIV is proposed based on the forced oscillation test data, taking into account the riser-seafloor interaction for the cross-flow VIV-induced fatigue damage at t...A prediction model of the deepwater steel catenary riser VIV is proposed based on the forced oscillation test data, taking into account the riser-seafloor interaction for the cross-flow VIV-induced fatigue damage at touch-down point (TDP). The model will give more reasonable simulation of SCR response near TDP than the previous pinned truncation model. In the present model, the hysteretic riser-soil interaction model is simplified as the linear spring and damper to simulate the seafloor, and the damping is obtained according to the dissipative power during one periodic riser-soil interaction. In order to validate the model, the comparison with the field measurement and the results predicted by Shear 7 program of a full-scale steel catenary riser is carried out. The main induced modes, mode frequencies and response amplitude are in a good agreement. Furthermore, the parametric studies are carried out to broaden the understanding of the fatigue damage sensitivity to the upper end in-plane offset and seabed characteristics. In addition, the fatigue stress comparison at TDP between the truncation riser model and the present full riser model shows that the existence of touch-down zones is very important for the fatigue damage assessment of steel catenary riser at TDP.展开更多
In the paper,an experiment investigation was conducted for one-and two-degree of freedom vortex-induced vibration(VIV) of a horizontally-oriented cylinder with diameter of 11 cm and length of 120 cm.In the experimen...In the paper,an experiment investigation was conducted for one-and two-degree of freedom vortex-induced vibration(VIV) of a horizontally-oriented cylinder with diameter of 11 cm and length of 120 cm.In the experiment,the spring constants in the cross-flow and in-line flow directions were regulated to change the natural vibration frequency of the model system.It was found that,in the one-degree of freedom VIV experiment,a "double peak" phenomenon was observed in its amplitude within the range of the reduced velocities tested,moreover,a "2T" wake appeared in the vicinity of the second peak.In the two-degree of freedom VIV experiment,the trajectory of cylinder exhibited a reverse "C" shape,i.e.,a "new moon" shape.Through analysis of these data,it appears that,besides the non-dimensional in-line and cross-flow natural vibration frequency ratios,the absolute value of the natural vibration frequency of cylinder is also one of the important parameters affecting its VIV behavior.展开更多

First, the CFD time domain simulation approach was applied to analyze the wake field behind a stationary cylinder and a vibrating cylinder. Then a vertical riser VIV response under uniform current was studied. The VIV response time histories revealed some valuable clues that could lead to explanation of the higher harmonics. After that, a vertical riser VIV response under shear current was investigated. A 3 000 ft (1 ft=-0.304 8 m) water depth top tensioned riser was sized, and its VIV responses under uniform and shear current were studied. Then this paper continues to discuss one catenary flexible riser VIV response during normal lay. Last, the time domain simulation approach was applied to a partially submerged flexible jumper, to study the jumper VIV behavior, and dynamic motion envelopes. It was demonstrated that the time domain simulation ap- proach is able to disclose details of the flow field, vortex shedding pattern, and riser dynamic behavior, and han- dle different tvoes of risers under different Woe of currents.展开更多

In the present work, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations were combined with the SST κ-ω turbulent model to simulate the stream-wise and transverse motion of an elastically mounted cylinder with a low mass-ratio, a natural frequency ratio of fx/fy = 1 and an Re number between 5 300 and 32 000, The four-order Runge-Kutta method was applied to solve the oscillating equation of the cylinder. The relationship between reduced velocity and parameters of the cylinder, including the lift coefficient, the drag coefficient, displacement and the vortex structure were then compared with recent experimental results and discussed in detail. The present numerical simulation reproduced effects have been observed in experiments, such as the lock-in phenomenon, the hysteretic phenomenon and beating behavior.展开更多

This not only results in static and dynamic loads on the flowline at span sections,but also generates vortex induced vibration (VIV),which can lead to fatigue issues. The phenomenon,if not predicted and controlled properly,will negatively affect pipeline integrity,leading to expensive remediation and intervention work. Span analysis can be complicated by:long span lengths,a large number of spans caused by a rough seabed,and multi-span interactions. In addition,the complexity can be more onerous and challenging when soil uncertainty,concrete degradation and unknown residual lay tension are considered in the analysis. This paper describes the latest developments and a'state-of-the-art' finite element analysis program that has been developed to simulate the span response of a flowline under complex boundary and loading conditions. Both VIV and direct wave loading are captured in the analysis and the results are sequentially used for the ultimate limit state (ULS) check and fatigue life calculation.展开更多

According to the measured value, the accuracy curves are given to show the advantages of HPD-S method over others. Based on the comparison above, HPD-S method is used to calculate the influence of ice covering on the mast to VIV responses. The research reported here is an analysis of the cylinder's trajectories. System identification methods were used to derive a best Fourier representation for these motions and to parse these motions into symmetric and asymmetric behaviors. It was postulated that the asymmetric behavior was due to distortions caused by the free surface and bottom used at the test facility, and that the symmetric behavior is representative of deepwater VIV. Further application of systems identification methods was used to associate the symmetric behavior and test conditions to a traditional vortex street model. These models were analyzed for their ability to predict details of VIV trajectories.展开更多
