Interdecadal Variability of East Asian Summer Monsoon Precipitation over 220 Years (1777-1997)

In this study, long-term (1777–1997) precipitation data for Seoul, Korea, wetness indices from eastern China, and modern observations are used to identify the interdecadal variability in East Asian summer monsoon precipitation over the last 220 years. In the East Asian monsoon region, two long-term timescales of dry–wet transitions for the interdecadal variability and quasi-40-and quasi-60-year timescales are dominant in the 220-year precipitation data of Seoul, as well as in the wetness indices over China. The wet and dry spells between Seoul (southern China) and northern China are out-of-phase (out-of-phase) at the quasi-60-year timescale, and in-phase (out-of-phase by approximately 90 ? before 1900 and in-phase after 1900) at the quasi-40-year timescale. In particular, during the last century, the dominant long-term timescales over East Asia tend to decrease from the quasi-60-year to the quasi-40-year with increasing time. The dominant quasi-40-year and quasi-60-year timescales of the Seoul precipitation in Korea are strongly correlated with these timescales of the northern Pacific Ocean. 展开更多

Using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis geopotential height (GHT) and wind at 850 hPa, GHT at 500 hPa, precipitation rate, sea level pressure (SLP) and precipitation observations from more than 600 stations nationwide in June-August from 1951 to 2006, and focusing on the East Asia-West Pacific region (10°-80°N, 70°-180°E), interannual variation of East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and its correlations with general circulation and precipitation patterns are studied by using statistical diagnostic methods such as 9-point high pass filtering, empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis, composite analysis and other statistical diagnosis, etc. It is concluded as follows: (1) EOF analysis of SLP in the East Asia-West Pacific region shows the existence of the zonal dipole oscillation mode (APD) between the Mongolia depression and the West Pacific high, and APD index can be used as an intensity index of EASM. (2) EOF analysis of GHT anomalies at 500 hPa in the East Asia-West Pacific region shows that the first EOF mode is characterized with an obvious meridional East Asian pattern (EAP), and EAP index can also be used as an EASM intensity index. (3) The composite analysis of high/low APD index years reveals the close correlation of APD index with EAP at 500 hPa (or 850 hPa). The study shows an obvious opposite correlation exists between APD index and EAP index with a correlation coefficient of -0.23, which passes the confidence test at 0.10 level. (4) Both APD and EAP indexes are closely correlated with precipitation during flood-prone season in China and precipitation rate over the East Asia-West Pacific region. The significant correlation area at 5% confidence level is mainly located from the southern area of the Yangtze River valley to the ocean around southern Japan, and the former is a positive correlation and the latter is a negative one. 展开更多

Based on the EAP (East Asia/Pacific) teleconnection in the summer circulation anomalies over the Northern Hemisphere, an index measuring the strength of the East Asian summer monsoon, i.e., the so-called EAP index, is defined in this paper. From the analyses of observed data, it is clearly shown that the EAP index defined in this study can well describe the interannual variability of summer rainfall and surface air temperature in East Asia, especially in the Yangtze River valley and the Huaihe River valley, Korea, and Japan. Moreover, this index can also reflect the interannual variability of the East Asian summer monsoon system including the monsoon horizontal circulation and the vertical-meridional circulation cell over East Asia. From the composite analyses of climate and monsoon circulation anomalies for high EAP index and for low EAP index, respectively, it is well demonstrated that the EAP index proposed in this study can well measure the strength of the East Asian summer monsoon. 展开更多

The results agree on the point that the East Asia monsoon has undergone an interdecadal variability in the mid-1970s. The intensity of the East Asia monsoon is weaker after this transition. Moreover the intensity and location of subtropical high that is an important component in East Asia monsoon system also shows interdecadal variation obviously. It is the interdecadal variation in atmospheric circulation that causes the drought over North China and flooding along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River after the mid-1970s. 展开更多

THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE PRECEDING WINTER MJO ACTIVITIES AND THE SUMMER PRECIPITATION IN YANGTZE-HUAIHE RIVER BASIN OF CHINA 被引量:4

The first two series(RMM1 and RMM2) of RMM Index(all-Season Real-time Multivariate MJO Index) are computed to obtain the interannual variation of the preceding winter(preceding December to current February) MJO strength,according to which active(or inactive) years of preceding winter MJO are divided.By utilizing the data provided by NCEP/NCAR,CMAP and China's 160 stations from 1979 to 2008,we studied the preceding winter MJO strength and discovered that the summer precipitation in the basin are of significantly negative correlation,i.e.when the preceding winter MJO is relatively active,the summer precipitation in the basin decreases,and vise verse.We also analyzed the causes.When the preceding winter MJO is relatively active,its release of potential heat facilities Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone(ITCZ) to strengthen and locate northward in winter and propagate northeastward.This abnormal situation lasts from winter to summer.In mid-May,ITCZ jumps northward to the South China Sea,the western Pacific subtropical high withdraws eastward,and the South China Sea summer monsoon sets off and strengthens.In summer,ITCZ propagates to South China Sea-subtropical western Pacific,the zonal circulation of subtropical Pacific strengthens,and a local meridional circulation of the South China Sea to the basin area forms,giving rise to the East Asia Pacific teleconnection wave-train.An East Asian monsoon trough and the Meiyu front show opposite features from south to north,the East Asian summer monsoon strengthens and advances northward.As a result,the summer monsoon is weakened as the basin is controlled by the subtropical high continually,with less rain in summer.On the contrary,when the preceding winter MJO is inactive,ITCZ weakens and is located southward,the subtropical high is located southward in summer,and the basin is in a region of ascending airflow with prevailing southwest wind.The East Asian monsoon trough and EASM weaken so that summer monsoon is reduced in the basin where precipitation increases. 展开更多

Wavelet analysis and Mann-Kendall tests are employed to evaluate the variation in the East Asian summer monsoon(EASM) and hydrological variables in the Haihe River basin calculated by the Variable Infiltration Capacity model. The relationships between those variables and the EASM are also examined. The results indicate consistent 40 a periodic variation in both the hydrological variables and the EASM. The hydrologic variables show downward trends in the Haihe River basin over the past 60 years, especially in piedmont regions of the Taihang-Yan Mountains. The variables are closely related to the EASM, whose continuous weakening since the 1970 s has resulted in prolonged drought and severe water shortages in the basin. The periodicity of the EASM index was analyzed using continuous wavelet transform methods. We found the most significant periodic signal of the EASM is ~80 years; therefore, the EASM may reinforce and reach a maximum in the 2040 s, resulting in more precipitation and other impacts on basin water resources. Hydrologic variables in the basin in the 2040 s are predicted, and their spatial distributions in the Haihe River basin are also discussed. These results allow for the estimation of water resources under forecasted EASM, which will be useful for water resources management in the Haihe River basin. 展开更多

Antarctic sea-ice oscillation index with a seesaw pattern is defined using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis girds data of monthly Antarctica sea-ice concentration from 1979 to 2002.The relationships between the index of winter and the summer precipitations in China as well as the onset date of the summer East Asia monsoon are presented.The study result shows that the grids of correlation coefficients passed 5% confidence level between Antarctic sea-ice oscillation index and Antarctic sea-ice concentration are more than 1/3 of all grids of Antarctica sea-ice,that means the index can represent 1/3 sea-ice area.The winter index has a significant correlation with abnormal summer(June-August) precipitation in China.The area of positive correlation lies in the Yangtze River basin and its south,and that of negative correlation lies mainly in the north of Yangtze River basin.While the winter index is positive(negative),the onset date of South China Sea monsoon is earlier(later),with a probability of 79%(80%).Consequently, a conceptual model is given in term of discussing the possible process between the winter Antarctic sea ice and the monsoon precipitation in China. 展开更多

In this study, we report that the EASM has been recovering since the early 1990s, although its strength is still less than in previous decades (averaged over the period 1965-1980). Following the recovery of the EASM, there has been a tendency in the last decade toward northward-moving rainbands and excessive rainfall in the Huaihe River valley (110°-120°E, 30°-35°N). There is evidence suggesting that the strengthening EASM since the early 1990s is linked to interdecadal change of land-sea thermal contrast. 展开更多

The East Asian subtropical summer monsoon(EASSM) is one component of the East Asian summer monsoon system,and its evolution determines the weather and climate over East China.In the present paper,we firstly demonstrate the formation and advancement of the EASSM rainbelt and its associated circulation and precipitation patterns through reviewing recent studies and our own analysis based on JRA-55(Japanese 55-yr Reanalysis) data and CMAP(CPC Merged Analysis of Precipitation),GPCP(Global Precipitation Climatology Project),and TRMM(Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) precipitation data.The results show that the rainy season of the EASSM starts over the region to the south of the Yangtze River in early April,with the establishment of strong southerly wind in situ.The EASSM rainfall,which is composed of dominant convective and minor stratiform precipitation,is always accompanied by a frontal system and separated from the tropical summer monsoon system.It moves northward following the onset of the South China Sea summer monsoon.Moreover,the role of the land-sea thermal contrast in the formation and maintenance of the EASSM is illustrated,including in particular the effect of the seasonal transition of the zonal land-sea thermal contrast and the influences from the Tibetan Plateau and midlatitudes.In addition,we reveal a possible reason for the subtropical climate difference between East Asia and East America.Finally,the multi-scale variability of the EASSM and its influential factors are summarized to uncover possible reasons for the intraseasonal,interannual,and interdecadal variability of the EASSM and their importance in climate prediction. 展开更多

Amplification of the Solar Signal in the Summer Monsoon Rainband in China by Synergistic Actions of Different Dynamical Responses 被引量:6

A rainband meridional shift index (RMSI) is defined and used to statistically prove that the East Asian summer monsoon rainband is usually significantly more northward in the early summer of solar maximum years than that of solar minimum years. By applying continuous wavelet transform, cross wavelet transform, and wavelet coherence, it is found that throughout most of the 20th century, the significant decadal oscillations of sunspot number (SSN) and the RMSI are phase-locked and since the 1960s, the SSN has led the RMSI slightly by approximately 1.4 yr. Wind and Eliassen-Palm (EP) flux analysis shows that the decadal meridional oscillation of the June rainband likely re- sults from both a stronger or earlier onset of the tropical monsoon and poleward shift of the subtropical westerly jet in high-solar months of May and June. The dynamical responses of the lower tropical monsoon and the upper subtropical westerly jet to the 11-yr solar cycle transmit bottom-up and top-down solar signals, respectively, and the synergistic actions between the monsoon and the jet likely amplify the solar signal at the northern boundary of the monsoon to some extent. 展开更多

提出了确定东亚夏季风活动区域、划分热带季风和副热带季风活动区域的指标,利用大气对流层风速、位势高度、湿度、温度、OLR以及TBB等NCEP/NCAR资料,从月、候和过程平均多种时间尺度,诊断分析了2005年6月(简称“0506”)华南持续性暴雨... 提出了确定东亚夏季风活动区域、划分热带季风和副热带季风活动区域的指标,利用大气对流层风速、位势高度、湿度、温度、OLR以及TBB等NCEP/NCAR资料,从月、候和过程平均多种时间尺度,诊断分析了2005年6月(简称“0506”)华南持续性暴雨的季风环流活动变化特征。结果表明:副热带高压强度偏强,西脊点位置偏西偏南,热带西太平洋(130°~140°E)区域越赤道气流偏强,华南处于气旋性低压异常区,无论是月时间尺度还是暴雨过程时间尺度都表现出这些明显特征;暴雨过程水汽除了来源于孟加拉湾和南海外,水汽通量异常部分主要来自南海和热带西太平洋,热带西太平洋水汽随着副高边缘气流经过南海向华南输送,从而为暴雨过程提供了丰富的水汽来源;2005年6月热带季风前沿在华南沿海地区停滞时间比气候平均偏长(2候),该特征是华南暴雨预报值得参考的信号;6月整个南海地区平均季风偏强,主要体现于经向风明显偏强,但华南持续性暴雨过程开始于南海地区夏季风非活跃期,这与热带季风季节内振荡向北传播到华南有关。以上季风活动变化特征为华南强降水提供了有利的动力条件和丰富的水汽来源。 展开更多

利用NCEP/NCAR海平面气压场和中国站点月降水量资料,研究了中国近47 a来的降水量变化空间分布特征及东亚夏季风与中国夏、秋季降水的关系。1961-2007年中国年降水量减少的区域主要在东北、华北、西北东部、西南东部和华南西部,形成一个... 利用NCEP/NCAR海平面气压场和中国站点月降水量资料,研究了中国近47 a来的降水量变化空间分布特征及东亚夏季风与中国夏、秋季降水的关系。1961-2007年中国年降水量减少的区域主要在东北、华北、西北东部、西南东部和华南西部,形成一个东北-西南向的带状区域,其余大部为增加趋势,其中陕西北部和四川中南部减少趋势显著,增加趋势显著的地区主要在西部,特别是新疆西北部。冬季降水量中国大部分地区为增加趋势,只有华北和西南的少部分地区为减少趋势;春季降水量青藏高原东部显著增加,陕西南部显著减少;夏季东北、华北和西南地区降水量为减少趋势,东南和西北大部为增加趋势,其中新疆北部和青海北部增加显著;秋季降水量中国的西部大部为增加趋势,东部大部为减少趋势,在甘肃南部和四川东部减少趋势显著。年降水量为增加趋势的区域面积大于减少趋势的区域面积;冬、春、夏季为增加趋势的面积显著地大于减少趋势的面积,其中冬季差异最大,只有秋季减少趋势的面积大于增加趋势的面积。年降水量相对变率低值区主要在西南和华南,高值区主要在新疆南部的塔里木盆地(盆地中有著名的塔克拉玛干沙漠),其次是内蒙古西部的沙漠地带。四个季节的降水量相对变率与年的分布类似。近61 a来东亚夏季风强度分别在20世纪60年代中期和70年代中期出现了两次明显的减弱过程。东亚夏季风与中国夏、秋季的降水量相关明显。东亚夏季风的减弱可能是中国夏季东北、华北和西南地区以及秋季东部地区降水量减少的一个重要原因。 展开更多

本文对2012年我国夏季降水的实况和预测进行简要回顾,发现2012年夏季降水大体呈北方涝、长江旱的分布,主雨带位于黄河流域及其以北,降水异常偏多的区域主要位于西北大部、内蒙古和环渤海湾,黄淮与江淮地区降水偏少,江汉至淮河上游一带... 本文对2012年我国夏季降水的实况和预测进行简要回顾,发现2012年夏季降水大体呈北方涝、长江旱的分布,主雨带位于黄河流域及其以北,降水异常偏多的区域主要位于西北大部、内蒙古和环渤海湾,黄淮与江淮地区降水偏少,江汉至淮河上游一带干旱严重;预测的主雨带位于华北南部至淮河,较实况偏南。对我国北方降水异常偏多的成因分析表明:2012年夏季欧亚中高纬地区阻塞高压(简称阻高)强盛,同时东北冷涡活动频繁,中高纬500 hPa高度场从西至东呈"+-+"的分布,这种环流形势没有造成长江洪涝是因为东亚夏季风异常偏强,同时西太平洋副热带高压(副高)偏北,冷暖空气对峙于我国北方地区,导致北方降水异常偏多。分析还表明阻高、东北冷涡、东亚夏季风和副高这四个系统的不同配置影响着冷暖气流的对峙位置,进而形成我国夏季的主雨带。最后通过定量和定性判断相结合的方法,选取了2012年夏季降水的最佳相似年和最佳相反年,对比分析了2012年夏季降水与其最佳相似年和最佳相反年的海温演变与东亚夏季风环流系统主要成员的差异:1959年夏季降水作为2012年夏季降水的最佳相似年,虽然海温及东亚夏季风系统关键成员异常不明显,但是和2012年也呈近似相反的特征;而1980年夏季降水作为2012年夏季降水的最佳相反年,海温及东亚夏季风环流系统关键成员和2012年呈显著的反向特征,这些观测事实反映了我国夏季降水与海温及东亚夏季风环流系统关键成员这些主要影响因子之间关系的年代际变化。 展开更多

东亚地区降水主要集中在夏季,是亚洲夏季风系统的重要特征。本文利用NCEP再分析资料和CRU的降水资料,分析了青藏高原非绝热加热对东亚夏季降水的影响。结果表明,东亚地区夏季降水的分布形势与青藏高原非绝热加热变化有很好的相关关系。... 东亚地区降水主要集中在夏季,是亚洲夏季风系统的重要特征。本文利用NCEP再分析资料和CRU的降水资料,分析了青藏高原非绝热加热对东亚夏季降水的影响。结果表明,东亚地区夏季降水的分布形势与青藏高原非绝热加热变化有很好的相关关系。由于高原非绝热加热可在亚洲东部沿海地区强迫出类似Rossby波列的大气环流低频振荡结构,而此低频波可以影响到西太平洋副热带高压的形态和位置变化,从而使得东亚夏季降水的形势发生变化。而青藏高原非绝热加热的形态从春季到夏季有很好的持续性,春季高原加热与夏季东亚的降水形势分布也有很好的相关。本研究中采用的青藏高原非绝热加热指数可作为东亚夏季降水预测的一个指标,亚洲季风降水不仅受赤道太平洋海温的影响,青藏高原地区的非绝热加热对其也有显著的影响作用。 展开更多

本研究利用逐日降水资料对中国东部夏季极端降水进行检测,并对转变前后的特征进行对比分析,进而从海、陆对增温的响应不同导致的环流调整给出成因分析。结果表明,(1)中国东部夏季极端降水在1990年前后出现显著的年代际转变,极端降水由... 本研究利用逐日降水资料对中国东部夏季极端降水进行检测,并对转变前后的特征进行对比分析,进而从海、陆对增温的响应不同导致的环流调整给出成因分析。结果表明,(1)中国东部夏季极端降水在1990年前后出现显著的年代际转变,极端降水由偏少转为偏多。转折后与转折前相比,中国东部夏季极端降水落区南移,南方偶极子分布型加强,南方极端降水增加、北方极端降水减少,其中华南和华东地区,极端降水量和降水日数增加,对夏季降水的贡献率增大;华北地区,极端降水量和降水日数减少,对夏季降水的贡献率减小。(2)西太平洋暖池区异常升温造成的海陆温差减小是中国东部夏季极端降水1990年前后转变的重要驱动因素之一。它造成1990年之后低纬度季风强度减弱、西太平洋副热带高压增强并南移、南海副高增强,而中高纬度气旋性环流异常被破坏、东亚大槽增强,进而导致华北经向水汽输送减弱,下沉运动显著加强,极端降水量和降水日数减少。于此同时,华南和华东地区则水汽输送加强,上升运动显著,有利于降水偏多,并伴随极端降水量和降水日数有所增加。 展开更多

为研究黄河流域水文气象要素变化规律,并揭示各要素与东亚夏季风之间的潜在关系,建立了全流域VIC水文模型、MK突变检验和MK相关检验。结果表明:从20世纪80年代中期开始,流域绝大部分地区气温上升趋势明显,而降水、蒸散发、径流深和土壤... 为研究黄河流域水文气象要素变化规律,并揭示各要素与东亚夏季风之间的潜在关系,建立了全流域VIC水文模型、MK突变检验和MK相关检验。结果表明:从20世纪80年代中期开始,流域绝大部分地区气温上升趋势明显,而降水、蒸散发、径流深和土壤湿度呈整体减小趋势,且中游地区减幅最大。各要素与东亚夏季风相关密切,但空间差异性明显。气温与东亚夏季风强度普遍呈负相关,且宁蒙河段及内流区相关性显著;其他要素则相反,正相关显著区域主要位于河口镇到三门峡区间。研究还发现相比较降水,黄土高原径流深对夏季风强度变化更为敏感。因此,对东亚夏季风的研究可为预测黄河流域内水文过程及水资源的变化提供重要的科学参考。 展开更多
