Based on the Schapery three-dimensional viscoelastic constitutive relationship with growing damage, a damage model with transverse matrix cracks for the unidirectional ?bre rein- forced viscoelastic composite plates is developed. By using Karman theory, the nonlinear dynamic governing equations of the viscoelastic composite plates under transverse periodic loading are es- tablished. By applying the ?nite di?erence method in spatial domain and the Newton-Newmark method in time domain, and using the iterative procedure, the integral-partial di?erential gov- erning equations are solved. Several gelatin-silicate composites, with or without incorporation of Ca2+ ions, were synthesized through sol-gel processing starting from gelatin and 3- (glycidoxypropyl) trimethoxysilane. The structure around the Si atoms was similar for all the samples. The measurement of viscoelastic properties indicated that the glass transition temperature and activation energy decreased with the incorporation of Ca2+ ions. The Ca2+ ion-containing composites were bioactive as they spontaneously deposited apatite when soaked in a simulated body fluid of the Kokubo recipe. 展开更多

Quantitative modelling of viscoelasticity of isotropic fibrous composites with viscoelastic matrices

Despite the wide usage of isotropic fibrous composites with a viscoelastic polymer matrix,no analytic model for their mechanical behaviour is known.This paper develops such a model for time-dependent Young’s modulus,showing that for typical constituents the time constants of composites are up to about 6% greater than the matrix shear time constant.Viscoelasticity is strongly suppressed for stiff fibres even at modest fibre volume fractions.Comparison with known results for particle and oriented fibre composites confirms isotropic fibrous composites as between the two in terms of viscoelastic behaviour,but more similar to the latter. 展开更多

Mathematical models for phenomena in the physical sciences are typically parameter-dependent, and the estimation of parameters that optimally model the trends suggested by experimental observation depends on how model-observation discrepancies are quantified. Commonly used parameter estimation techniques based on least-squares minimization of the model-observation discrepancies assume that the discrepancies are quantified with the L<sup>2</sup>-norm applied to a discrepancy function. While techniques based on such an assumption work well for many applications, other applications are better suited for least-squared minimization approaches that are based on other norm or inner-product induced topologies. Motivated by an application in the material sciences, the new alternative least-squares approach is defined and an insightful analytical comparison with a baseline least-squares approach is provided. 展开更多
