Furthermore, we have calculated the longshore drift sediment transport rates and equilibrium cross-sectional areas of the entrance channel by using the method of sedimentary dynamics. The results indicate that the longshore drift sediment transport is dominated by waves with a direction from south to north, which result in rapid changes of the entrance channel. Therefore, some suggestions were proposed for improving the water quality and restoring the ecosystem of estuary. The engineering method includes increasing the sea-route of entrance channel, tidal prism and water exchanges in Shamei Lagoon.展开更多

A study of the relationship between the process of development and evolution of the sequential step-variation and the regional seismicity indicated that the sequential step-variation anomalies are rather better in coincidence with the time, magnitude and frequency of regional seismic activities, which may predict the seismicity trend in months. Furthermore, on this basis, if the water level changes in a characteristic manner, the seismic regime during the time period from several days to 20 days or more may be evaluated. By using the method presented in this paper we had a prediction about the Baotou ML=6.6 earthquake on May 3, 1996. This event occurred within the predicted time span but with a less magnitude and a little location deviation.展开更多

This fault strikes mainly northeast or northeast to north, dipping southeast, and extends over a length of 15km. It is a major geological and geomorphological margin, controlling the neotectonic movement in this region. On the southeast side of Wanquan fault are the Late Quaternary unconsolidated deposits, forming a basin or deposition; but on the other side is Mesozoic volcano debris, forming lower-mountains and hills. Wanquan fault is a mid- to-high-angle normal fault dipping southeast. This fault was more active in the Quaternary. Since the middle-late part of the alate Pleistocene, the average rate with vertical slip of a single fault is over 0. 03 ~ 0. 3mm /a,but the fault has multiple slipping surfaces, and a total rate with vertical slip will be estimated.展开更多

Totalsulfur and d 13C values decreased upwards in the top 30 cm of a sediment core that spanned the last 200 years of deposi-tion. Total sulfur concentration and d 13C values respectively decreased upward from 1.92% to 0.36%, and -20.63?to -23.64? The C/S ratio in the 19th century and earlier was relatively stable in the range of 0.47—0.80, and there was a positive correlation between organic carbon and total sulfur. Since around 1900 AD, the C/S ratio increased rapidly to a maximum of 3.94, but no simple correlation was found be-tween organic carbon and total sulfur during this more re-cent period. These results indicated that before 1800 AD, the lagoon had a fully marine character, and the location of to-day抯 Wanquan River Estuary was an open embayment. From 1800 to 1900, the salinity of Shamei Lagoon decreased noticeably. The amount of seawater which could enter thelagoon decreased gradually as the Yudai spit grew. Today, seawater scarcely affects the lagoon; it is essentially a fresh-water basin.展开更多
