The subduction rate census for potential density classes showed a peak corresponding to Indian Ocean subtropical mode water (IOSTMW) in the southwestern part of the South Indian Ocean subtropical gyre. The deeper mixed layer depth, the sharper mixed-layer fronts and the associated relatively faster circulation in the present climatology resulted in a larger lateral induction, which primarily dominants the IOSTMW subduction rate, while with only minor contribution from vertical pumping. Without loss of generality, through careful analysis of the water characteristics in the layer of minimum vertical temperature gradient (LMVTG), the authors suggest that the IOSTMW was identified as a thermostad, with a lateral minimum of low potential vorticity (PV, less than 200× 10^-12 m^-1·s^-1) and a low dT/dz (less than 1.5℃/(100 m)). The IOSTMW within the South Indian Ocean subtropical gyre distributed in the region approximately from 25° to 50° E and from 30° to 39°S. Additionally, the average characteristics (temperature, salinity, potential density) of the mode water were estimated about (16.38 ± 0.29)℃, (35.46 ±0.04), (26.02 ±0.04) ae over the past 60 years.展开更多

A SWRC is often described as a single-valued function that relates the soil water potential ψ to volumetric water content θ of the soil. However, an in-situ ψ − θ relation should show soil water hysteresis, though this fact is often neglected in analyses of field soil water regimes while long-term in-situ soil water hysteresis is not well characterized. This study aimed at probing and characterizing in-situ ψ − θ relations. The developments of large hysteresis in the in-situ ψ − θ relations were observed only a few times during the study period of 82 months. Any of the large hysteretic behaviors in the ψ − θ relations began with an unusually strong continual reduction in ψ. The completion of a hysteresis loop required a recorded maximum rainfall. Because the study field had very small chances to meet such strong rainfall events, it took multiple years to restore the fraction of soil water depleted by the unusually strong continual reduction in ψ. While wetting-drying cycles had occurred within a certain domain of ψ, hysteretic behaviors tended to be so small that the in-situ ψ − θ relation can be approximated as a single-valued function of θ(ψ). These observed patterns of the in-situ ψ − θ relations were characterized by kinds of difference in dθ/dψ between a drying process and a wetting process at a given ψ. Thus, more amounts of experimental facts about wetting SWRCs in parallel with drying SWRCs should be needed for correct modelling, analyzing, and predicting soil water regimes in fields. It is also necessary to increase our understandings about the long-term trends of occurrences of extreme weather conditions associated with possible change in climate.展开更多

[Method] The application proportion of complex water-holding organic materials was determined by multi-factor mixture experiment and the curve changes of soil moisture characters were tested to analyze water-holding capacity and water availability of soils. [Result] The initial moisture content of soil with different mixture proportions improved in varying degrees. For example, when water-retention agents reached 0.4% and 0.6% of soil weight, soil moisture contents were 69.0% and70.5%, respectively, which showed significant differences with the control(S0.0). Soil dehydration terms in different treatments all extended, prolonging in the range of4.6-14 d. [Conclusion] The applications of water-retention agent and organic material would improve water-holding capacity of hills and low mountains, and initial moisture content and dehydration cycle tend to be volatile upon mixture proportion. Therefore,it is necessary to adjust soil fertility, crop species, and irrigation to meet crop demands on fertilizer and water.展开更多

The results of the study show that the compaction in soil profile is relatively homogeneous.the specific gravity and volume weight of soil increase with deepening of soil horizon. The water infiltration rate of soil in the stand is 17,6 times as high as in rangeland.Owing to the intense absorption of water by root system of plants,a drying layer is formed in soil horizon from 2.3 m to 2.7m,showing that the subsoil moisture is in the state of deficit. The annual water storage capacity in 2 m of soil horizon is 360 mm 370mm,or 63% 65% of annual precipitation. Compared with farmland, mountain poplar stand reduces the surface runoff and soil loss by 70% and 99%,respectively,indicating the great benefits to soil and water conservation.展开更多

Frac-tal models provide a practical alternative for indirectly estimating soil water retention characteristics fromparticle-size distribution data. Predictive capabilities of three fractal models, i.e, Tyler-Wheatcraft model,Rieu-Sposito model, and Brooks-Corey model, were fully evaluated in this work using experimental datafrom an international database and literature. Particle-size distribution data were firstly interpolated into20 classes using a van Genuchten-type equation. Fractal dimensions of the tortuous pore wall and the poresurface were then calculated from the detailed particle-size distribution and incorporated as a parameter infractal water retention models. Comparisons between measured and model-estimated water retention cha-racteristics indicated that these three models were applicable to relatively different soil textures and pressurehead ranges. Tyler-Wheatcraft and Brooks-Corey models led to reasonable agreements for both coarse- andmedium-textured soils, while the latter showed applicability to a broader texture range. In contrast, Rieu-Sposito model was more suitable for fine-textured soils. Fractal models produced a better estimation of watercontents at low pressure heads than at high pressure heads.展开更多

Test results indicated that water consumption increased with soil water rise. The maximum consumption of water was at the joining stage and filling stage. And then, the results showed that under rainwater irrigation treatment, the more the soil moisture was, the more the water consumption was. The water stress in whole highland barely growth period reduced biomass and yield. Compared with that of normal water treatment, biomass of slight water stress, middle water stress and severe water stress treatment was decreased by 29.9%, 41.7% and 47.6%, respectively, and yield of the three treatments was decreased by 15.8%, 43.7% and 57.2%, respectively. But rainfall after filling stage was beneficial to biomass and yield of highland barely. Compared with water stress on whole growth period, the biomass and yield of rainfall treatments after the filling stage were increased by 13%, 75.8%, 128.1%, 157.8% and 42.8%, 84%, 201.6%,and 269.5%. The results indicated that biomass and yield of rainwater irrigation after the filling stage had compensatory effect for highland barley growth under water stress, and could improve the water use efficiency. Therefore, properly rainwater usage is beneficial to the increase of yield and water use efficiency of Tibet highland barley-25 under water stress.展开更多

Though water quality has improved, it is still insufficient. In summer, eutrophication is seen in lakes and inner bays, as well as rivers. As a countermeasure to prevent eutrophication, the removal treatment of nutrient salts such as nitrogen and phosphorus is done, in addition to organic substance elimination in the domestic sewerage system. This report will show the water quality characteristics of rivers and ponds in Japan. It is considered that these investigative results are effective when the water quality improvement of the stabilization ponds where eutrophication occurs are examined in China.展开更多

For such deep sea projects, all-vertical-piled wharves are suitable structures and generally located in open waters, greatly affected by wave action. Currently, no systematic studies or simplified numerical methods are available for deriving the dynamic characteristics and dynamic responses of all-vertical-piled wharves under wave cyclic loads. In this article, we compare the dynamic characteristics of an all-vertical-piled wharf with those of a traditional inshore high-piled wharf through numerical analysis; our research reveals that the vibration period of an all-vertical-piled wharf under cyclic loading is longer than that of an inshore high-piled wharf and is much closer to the period of the loading wave. Therefore, dynamic calculation and analysis should be conducted when designing and calculating the characteristics of an all-vertical-piled wharf. We establish a dynamic finite element model to examine the dynamic response of an all-vertical-piled wharf under wave cyclic loads and compare the results with those under wave equivalent static load; the comparison indicates that dynamic amplification of the structure is evident when the wave dynamic load effect is taken into account. Furthermore, a simplified dynamic numerical method for calculating the dynamic response of an all-vertical-piled wharf is established based on the P-Y curve. Compared with finite element analysis, the simplified method is more convenient to use and applicable to large structural deformation while considering the soil non-linearity. We confirmed that the simplified method has acceptable accuracy and can be used in engineering applications.展开更多

To analyze complex thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) behaviors of subgrade, it is essential to determine the soil–water characteristic curve (SWCC) that represents the relationship between matric suction and moisture content. In this study, a full-automatic rapid stress-dependent SWCC pressure-plate extractor was developed. Then, the influences of overburden stress and degree of compaction on the SWCC of subgrade soil such as high liquid limit silt (MH) and low liquid limit clay (CL) were analyzed. Accordingly, a new model taking into account the influences of overburden stress and degree of compaction based on the well-known Van Genuchten (VG) SWCC fitting model was presented and validated. The results show that with the increase of the degree of compaction and overburden stress, the saturated moisture content of subgrade soil decreases, while the air-entry value increases and the transition section curve becomes flat. The influences of the degree of compaction and overburden stress on the SWCC of MH is greater than that of CL. Meanwhile, there was a satisfactory agreement between the prediction and measurement, indicating a good performance of the new model for predicting the SWCC.展开更多

As one of the countermeasures, alkali-activated cement using blast furnace slag powder with alkaline stimulants is considered to be a very promising solution for reducing carbon dioxide emissions, but there is a lack of information about the fundamental properties of alkali-activated materials. This study presents an experimental investigation of the fundamental properties of an alkali-activated slag system with sodium carbonate (NC) and calcium hydroxide (CH). The effects of calcium sulfo-aluminate (CSA) and shrinkage reducing agent (SRA) on the properties of blast furnace slag (BFS) based alkali-activated mixture were also investigated. In the experiments, fundamental characteristics including compressive strength, drying shrinkage, and water penetration tests of mortar were evaluated. Porosity, pH, and ignition loss were measured to verify the effectiveness of the materials. The experimental investigation revealed that the compressive strength was increased with the increasing replacement rates of NC in the BFS mortar, and in the case of water to BFS ratio of 0.45 with sodium carbonation addition contents 10 wt.%, the compressive strength for 28 days of curing reaches more than 50 MPa. Low water to BFS ratio and higher addition ratio of NC had a positive effect on the compressive strength development of mortar. Incorporating NC into BFS would affect the decrease in porosity and increase in ignition loss, leading to higher compressive strength. There was a negligible change to the compressive strength, porosity, pH, and ignition loss of BFS samples made with CH, thus, the addition rates of CH to BFS have no or little significant effect on the fundamental properties of alkali-activated cement. From the results of drying shrinkage and water penetration tests, the addition of NC and CH only to BFS exhibited poor drying shrinkage and water penetration characteristics. However, these problems may be overcome due to the use of CSA or SRA in the alkali-activated system made with NC or CH.展开更多

The effects of tillage practices on the water consumption and water use efifciency (WUE) of wheat under high-yield conditions using supplemental irrigation based on testing soil moisture dynamic change were examined in this study. This experiment was conducted from 2007 to 2010, with ifve tillage practice treatments, namely, strip rotary tillage (SR), strip rotary tillage after subsoiling (SRS), rotary tillage (R), rotary tillage after subsoiling (RS), and plowing tillage (P). The results showed that in the SRS and RS treatments the total water and soil water consumptions were 11.81, 25.18%and 12.16, 14.75%higher than those in SR and R treatments, respectively. The lowest ratio of irrigation consumption to total water consumption in the SRS treatment was 18.53 and 21.88%for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 growing seasons, respectively. However, the highest percentage of water consumption was found in the SRS treatment from anthesis to maturity. No signiifcant difference was found between the WUE of the lfag leaf at the later iflling stage in the SRS and RS treatments, but the lfag leaf WUE at these stages were higher than those of other treatments. The SRS and RS treatments exhibited the highest grain yield (9 573.76 and 9 507.49 kg ha-1 for 3-yr average) with no signiifcant difference between the two treatments, followed by P, R and SR treatments. But the SRS treatment had the highest WUE. Thus, the 1-yr subsoiling tillage, plus 2 yr of strip rotary planting operation may be an efifcient measure to increase wheat yield and WUE.展开更多

Therefore,it is necessary to adjust soil fertility, crop species, and irrigation to meet crop demands on fertilizer and water.
文摘The soil physical properties, its water characteristics and the benefits to soil and water conservation in mountain poplar stand were determined and studied. Compared with farmland, mountain poplar stand reduces the surface runoff and soil loss by 70% and 99%,respectively,indicating the great benefits to soil and water conservation.

文摘Soil water retention characteristics are the key information required in hydrological modeling. Fractal models produced a better estimation of watercontents at low pressure heads than at high pressure heads.

文摘This paper was to study the effect of irrigation and rainfall on water consumption characteristics and yield of high yield highland barley in Tibet river valley. In pots, highland barley-25 of Tibet was used as the test material to provide eight water stress treatments: normal water, slight water stress, middle water stress, and severe water stress in two environmental conditions(the whole growth period water stress and the rainwater irrigation after filling stage). Therefore, properly rainwater usage is beneficial to the increase of yield and water use efficiency of Tibet highland barley-25 under water stress.
文摘In Japan, various countermeasures have been taken to improve the water quality of public waters such as rivers and lakes. It is considered that these investigative results are effective when the water quality improvement of the stabilization ponds where eutrophication occurs are examined in China.

文摘There has been a growing trend in the development of offshore deep-water ports in China. We confirmed that the simplified method has acceptable accuracy and can be used in engineering applications.

文摘The subgrade soil is generally in saturated or unsaturated condition. Meanwhile, there was a satisfactory agreement between the prediction and measurement, indicating a good performance of the new model for predicting the SWCC.
文摘Gas field water is the formation water produced together with natural gas in the process of natural gas exploitation. The gas field water treated is difficult to reach the standard due to its wide sources, numerous types and complex composition. In addition,it can pollute soil, surface water and groundwater. In this study, the quality and pollution characteristics of gas field water in eastern Sichuan were studied by conventional water quality determination and GC-MS.The results show that the main components of gas field water in eastern Sichuan were chloride,COD Cr,SS,anionic surfactant, sulfide and other substances. The gas field water could be divided into two types according to the characteristics of water quality,of which one had high mineralization and high organic compounds, and the other had high sulfur and high organic compounds. There were 17 kinds of organic pollutants in the gas field water, mainly including alkanes, alcohols, esters and a small amount of acids.

文摘Loess has distinctive characteristics, leading to frequent landslide disasters and posing serious threats to the lives and properties of local re sidents. The involvement of water repre sents a critical factor in inducing loess landslides. This study focuses on three neighboring cities sequentially situated on the Loess Plateau along the direction of aeolian deposition of loess, namely Lanzhou,Dingxi, and Tianshui, which are densely populated and prone to landslide disasters. The variations in hydraulic properties, including water retention capacity and permeability, are investigated through Soil Water Characteristic Curve(SWCC)test and hydraulic conductivity test. The experimental findings revealed that Tianshui loess exhibited the highest water retention capacity, followed by Dingxi loess, while Lanzhou loess demonstrated the lowest water retention capacity.Contrastingly, the results for the saturated permeability coefficient were found to be the opposite:Tianshui loess showed the lowest permeability, whereas Lanzhou loess displayed the highest permeability. These results are supported and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM)observation. In addition, the water retention capacity is mathematically expressed using the van Genuchten model and extended to predict unsaturated hydraulic properties of loess. The experimental results exhibit a strong accordance with one another and align with the regional distribution patterns of disasters.
文摘Cement as a building material, has high fluidity, compressive strength, and durability, but carbon dioxide emissions during cement production are a major problem. However, these problems may be overcome due to the use of CSA or SRA in the alkali-activated system made with NC or CH.

文摘To predict the soil-water characteristic curve(i.e.SWCC)of natural and remoulded Malan loess from soil physical properties,one-point methods for determining the SWCC that are much simpler than experimental methods are proposed. The predicted SWCC is presented in the form of the BRUTSAERT equation,in which the four model parameters can be estimated from soil physical properties using the best correlations obtained in the present study along with one measured data point. The proposed one-point methods are validated using the measured SWCC data reported in the literature. The results of validation studies suggest that the proposed one-point methods can provide reasonable prediction of the SWCC for natural and remoulded Malan loess. The measured data point should be within the transition zone;the measured suction is suggested between25to100kPa for natural loess, while between100to500kPa for remoulded loess.

文摘Water shortage is a serious issue threatening the sustainable development of agriculture in the North China Plain, with the winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) as its largest water-consuming crop. Thus, the 1-yr subsoiling tillage, plus 2 yr of strip rotary planting operation may be an efifcient measure to increase wheat yield and WUE.

文摘Physical properties of sea water, such as salinity, temperature, density and acoustic velocity, could be demarcated through degradation of energy caused by water absorption, attenuation and other factors. To overcome the challenging difficulties in the quick monitoring of these physical properties,we have explored the high resolution marine seismic survey to instantly characterize them.Based on the unique wavefield propagating in the sea water,we have developed a new approach to suppress the noise caused by the shallow sea water disturbance and obtain useful information for estimating the sea water structure. This approach improves seismic data with high signal-to-noise ratio and resolution. The seismic reflection imaging can map the sea water structure acoustically.Combined with the knowledge of local water body structure profile over years, the instant model for predicting the sea water properties could be built using the seismic data acquired from the specially designed high precision marine seismic acquisition. This model can also be updated with instant observation and the complete data processing system. The present study has the potential value to many applications, such as 3D sea water monitoring, engineering evaluation, geological disaster assessment and environmental assessment.
