The purpose of this study is to address the problem of ancient towns dying out in developing countries, particularly China.Intensifying conflicts between human settlements and the natural environment are described, and guidelines are proposed for the development of waterside ancient towns in China’s southern Shaanxi Province in the interest of conserving cultural and natural heritage. The towns of Qingmuchuan,Fenghuang and Houliu were selected as representative examples due to their strong reputation among tourists. They have the characteristics of traditional southern Shaanxi towns, but each has a completely different layout, space and structure. The comparative findings of this research provide a point of reference for establishing guidelines to preserve the integrity of ancient towns worldwide. In this paper,we compare the geographical conditions with the layout and texture of the streets by Google Earth Pro.And we analyze the details of spaces along the river zones, architectural styles and building decorations in order to research the relationship between the natural environment and the human settlement conditions. We note the unfortunate common trend of commercial development steadily taking over the natural environment, particularly the rivers and unique elements of the old towns. Finally,we summarize the similarities and differences of the spatial forms among these towns and put forward proposals for the further development of ancient towns. This research is important for all regions which stand to lose their national treasures.Consequently, measures should be to taken to curtail hyper development before we lose our historicscenery. 展开更多

It is important to improve residential thermal comfort in the high dense cities,in which wind environment is crucial.Waterside buildings take an advantage of micro-hydrological-climate in summer that should be used to enhance residential thermal comfort especially in the subtropical region. In order to propose design approaches according to the outdoor thermal comfort of the waterside residential,a case study of Shenzhen She Kou residential district has been made.It focused on various factors that could have influence on wind environment for improving thermal comfort.Using wind velocity ratio(ΔRi)criterion, factors of building development volume, building direction and layout pattern, open space arrangement etc.have been broadly explored using FLUENT simulation. To planning parameters, the Floor Area Ratio(FAR)is significantly influence wind environment, the smaller FAR is better. To the vertical layout of the buildings,multi-storey layout and multi-storey&sub high-rise mixed layout would provide better wind environment. To the horizontal layout, the determinant is better than the peripheral.Other factors such as the buildings’direction towards the road, buildings’height, and open space setting, have influence on wind environment yet.In general, the more benefit of design layout for wind breezing, the better wind environment it could get. 展开更多

Based on the Han Dynasty stone reliefs unearthed in the ancient Xuzhou area,a kind of pavilion above the water—hanging waterside pavilion(Xuan Shui Xie,built above the water with stilts and brackets as the base and seeming hanging on the water)was systematically collected and classifi ed into 2 major categories:single-bracket column hanging waterside pavilion and multiple-bracket column hanging waterside pavilion. The research showed that hanging waterside pavilion got ride of traditional pavilion’s reliance on rammed earth foundation. In addition to working as a connection part, brackets,or bucket arches(Dougong)had also tremendous load-bearing capacity, straight and curved brackets co-formed a giant multiple bracket system, staircases and one-side hanging structure were used to support the upper construction,so that a new towering but light wooden structure hanging above the water was created, which was an innovation of bracket technique of the Han Dynasty, and also a creative design in the development of wooden architecture. 展开更多
