Propagation of whistler-mode waves in a magnetized plasma structure is investigated in the Keda linear magnetized plasma device.The magnetized plasma structure has its density peak in the center,and the background magnetic field is homogeneous along the axial direction.A whistlermode wave with a frequency of 0.3 times of electron cyclotron frequency(fce)is launched into the plasma structure.The wave normal angle(WNA)is about 25°,and the wavefront exhibits a wedge structure.During propagation of the whistler wave,both the propagating angle and WNA slowly approach zero,and then the wave is converged toward the center of the structure.Therefore,the wave tends to be trapped in the plasma structure.The results present observational evidence of the propagation of a whistler-mode wave trapped in the enhanced-density structure in a laboratory plasma.This trapping effect is consistent with satellite observations in the inner magnetosphere. 展开更多

Whistler mode waves are critical emissions in magnetized plasmas that usually influence the electron dynamics in a planetary magnetosphere.In this paper,we present a unique event in the Martian magnetosphere in which enhanced whistler mode waves(~10^(−11) V^(2)/m^(2)/Hz)with frequency of 0.1 f_(ce)-0.5 f_(ce) occurred,based on MAVEN data,exactly corresponding to a significant decrease of suprathermal electron fluxes.The diffusion coefficients are calculated by using the observed electric field wave spectra.The pitch angle diffusion coefficient can approach 10^(−2) s^(−1),which is much larger,by~100 times,than the momentum diffusion coefficient,indicating that pitch angle scattering dominates the whistler-electron resonance process.The current results can successfully explain the dropout of the suprathermal electrons in this event.This study provides direct evidence for whistler-driven electron losses in the Martian magnetosphere. 展开更多

In this paper,we analyze one reconnection event observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale(MMS)mission at the earth’s magnetopause.In this event,the spacecraft crossed the reconnection current sheet from the magnetospheric side to the magnetosheath side,and whistler waves were observed on both the magnetospheric and magnetosheath sides.On the magnetospheric side,the whistler waves propagated quasi-parallel to the magnetic field and toward the X-line,while on the magnetosheath side they propagated almost anti-parallel to the magnetic field and away from the X-line.Associated with the enhancement of the whistler waves,we find that the fluxes of energetic electrons are concentrated around the pitch angle 90°when their energies are higher than the minimum energy that is necessary for the resonant interactions between the energetic electrons and whistler waves.This observation provides in situ observational evidence of resonant interactions between energetic electrons and whistler waves in the magnetic reconnection. 展开更多

Modulated high frequency (HF) heating of the ionosphere provides a feasible means of artificially generating ex- tremely low frequency (ELF)/very low frequency (VLF) whistler waves, which can leak into the inner magnetosphere and contribute to resonant interactions with high energy electrons. Combining the ray tracing method and test particle simulations, we evaluate the effects of energetic electron resonant scattering driven by the discrete, multi-frequency arti- ficially generated ELF/VLF waves. The simulation results indicate a stochastic behavior of electrons and a linear profile of pitch angle and kinetic energy variations averaged over all test electrons. These features are similar to those associated with single-frequency waves. The computed local diffusion coefficients show that, although the momentum diffusion of relativistic electrons due to artificial ELF/VLF whistlers with a nominal amplitude of ~ 1 pT is minor, the pitch angle scattering can be notably efficient at low pitch angles near the loss cone, which supports the feasibility of artificial triggering of multi-frequency ELF/VLF whistler waves for the removal of high energy electrons from the magnetosphere. We also investigate the dependences of diffusion coefficients on the frequency interval (△f) of the discrete, multi-frequency waves. We find that there is a threshold value of Af for which the net diffusion coefficient of multi-frequency whistlers is inversely proportional to △f (proportional to the frequency components Nw) when △f is below the threshold value but it remains unchanged with increasing Af when △f is larger than the threshold value. This is explained as being due to the fact that the resonant scattering effect of broadband waves is the sum of the effects of each frequency in the 'effective frequency band'. Our results suggest that the modulation frequency of HF heating of the ionosphere can be appropriately selected with reasonable frequency intervals so that better performance of controlled precipitation of high energy electrons in the plasmasphere by artificial ELF/VLF whistler waves can be achieved. 展开更多

Effects of Spatial Variation of Thermal Electrons on Whistler-Mode Waves in Magnetosphere

A ray-tracing method is developed to evaluate the wave growth/damping and specifically propagation trajectories of the magnetospherically reflected Whistler-mode waves. The methodology is valid for weak wave growth/damping when plasma is comprised of a cold electron population and a hot electron population, together with background neutralizing ions, e.g. protons. The effect of anisotropic thermal electrons on the propagation of Whistler-mode waves is studied in detail. Numerical results are obtained for a realistic spatial variation model of plasma population, including the cold electron density distribution, and the thermal electron density and temperature distribution. It is found that, analogous to the case of the typical cold plasma approximation, the overall ray path of Whistler-mode waves is insensitive to the thermal electron density and temperature anisotropy, and the ray path reflects where wave frequency is below or comparable to the local lower hybrid resonance frequency flhr. However, the wave growth is expected to be influenced by the thermal electron population. The results present a first detailed verification for the validity of the typical cold plasma approximation for the propagation of Whistler-mode waves and may account for the observation that the Whistler-mode waves tend to propagate on a particular magnetic shell L where the wave frequency is comparable to fthe. 展开更多

Whistler-mode chorus waves are regarded as an important acceleration mechanism contributing to the formation of relativistic and ultra-relativistic electrons in the Jovian radiation belts. Quantitative determination of the chorus wave driven electron scattering effect in the Jovian magnetosphere requires detailed information of both ambient magnetic field and plasma density and wave spectral property, which however cannot be always readily acquired from observations of existed missions to Jupiter. We therefore perform a comprehensive analysis of the sensitivity of chorus induced electron scattering rates to ambient magnetospheric and wave parameters in the Jovian radiation belts to elaborate to which extent the diffusion coefficients depend on a number of key input parameters. It is found that quasi-linear electron scattering rates by chorus can be strongly affected by the ambient magnetic field intensity, the wave latitudinal coverage, and the peak frequency and bandwidth of the wave spectral distribution in the Jovian magnetosphere, while they only rely slightly on the background plasma density profile and the peak wave normal angle, especially when the wave emissions are confined at lower latitudes. Given the chorus wave amplitude, chorus induced electron scattering rates strongly depend on Jovian L-shell to exhibit a tendency approximately proportional to L_J^3. Our comprehensive analysis explicitly demonstrates the importance of reliable information of both the ambient magnetospheric state and wave distribution property to understanding the dynamic electron evolution in the Jovian radiation belts and therefore has implications for future mission planning to explore the extreme particle radiation environment of Jupiter and its satellites. 展开更多

The effect of a longitudinal electric field on whistler waves is studied based onkinetic theory.A local Maxwellian distribution is taken as stationary distribution function ofelectrons which departs from thermodynamic equilibrium due to the applied electric field.Thedielectric tensor is derived by integrating along orbit of the particle in the unperturbed field.Dispersion relation and growth rate are analysed from Hermitian and anti-Hermitian parts ofthis tensor respectively.It is found that the waves are growing when the angle between the wavevector and the electric field is in range of θ【2θ_c, otherwise the whistler waves are damping.Thegrowth rate increases with wave frequency and decreases with the angle between the wave vectorand the applied field.In the case of ω_e(?)Ω the maximum of growth rate,which is at θ=O_l isproportional to the plasma density and anti-proportional to the magnetic field.Some computedresults for parameters at top of the F layer are given. 展开更多

Kinetic simulation is a powerful tool to study the excitation and propagation of whistler-mode waves in the Earth’s inner magnetosphere.This method typically applies a scaled-down dipole magnetic field to save computational time.However,it remains unknown whether whistler wave propagation in the scaled-down dipole field is consistent with that in the realistic dipole field.In this work,we develop a ray-tracing code with a scalable dipole magnetic field to address this concern.The simulation results show that parallel whistler waves at different frequencies gradually become oblique after leaving the equator and propagate in different raypaths in a dipole magnetic field.During their propagation,the higher frequency waves tend to have larger wave normal angles at the same latitude.Compared with the wave propagation in a realistic dipole field,the wave raypath and wave normal remain the same,whereas the wave amplification or attenuation is smaller because of the shorter propagation time in a scaled-down dipole field.Our study provides significant guidance for kinetic simulations of whistler-mode waves. 展开更多

Energetic (〉0.6 MeV) electron fluxes are found to increase significantly during the recovery phase and the main phase, by a factor of~50 higher than the prestorm level. These high electron fluxes occur when strong dayside whistler-mode waves are present. Two-dimensional (2D) numerical simulations are carried out and the results demonstrate that the dayside whistler-mode wave can contribute to such enhancements in electron flux within 24 h, consistent with the observation. 展开更多

The morphogical characteristics of low latitude whistlers are discussed and compared with characteristics of middle and high latitude whistlers. The Max. electron density (Nm) at the height of the ionosphere obtained from whistler dispersion comes out to be higher than that of the background which is in accordance with the characteristics of whistler duct. The equivalent width is found to be close to the satellite observations and the characteristics of whistler duct in low latitude ionosphere are similar to those in middle and high latitude ionosphere. The width of ducts estimated from the diffuseness of the whistler track observed during magnetic storm is found to lie in the range of 50 - 200 Km. 展开更多

A Three-Dimensional Ray Tracing Study on Whistler-Mode Chorus During Geomagnetic Activities

A three-dimensional ray tracing study of a whistler-mode chorus is conducted for different geomagnetic activities by using a global core plasma density model. For the upperband chorus, the initial azimuthal wave angle affects slightly the projection of ray trajectories onto the plane (Z, √(x^2 + y^2)), but controls the longitudinal propagation. The trajectory of the upper-band chorus is strongly associated with the plasmapause and the magnetic local time (MLT) of chorus source region. For the high geomagnetic activity, the chorus trajectory moves inward together with the plasmapause. In the bulge region, the plasmapause extends outward, while the chorus trajectory moves outward together with the plasmapause. For moderately or high geomagnetic activity, the lower-band chorus suffers low hybrid resonance (LHR) reflection before it reaches the plasmapause, leading to a weak correlation with the geomagnetic activity and magnetic local time of the chorus source region. For low geomagnetic activity, the lower-band chorus may be reflected firstly at the plasmapause instead of suffering LHR reflection, exhibiting a propagation characteristic similar to that of the upper-band chorus. The results provide a new insight into the propagation characteristics of the chorus for different geomagnetic activities and contribute to further understanding of the acceleration of energetic electron by a chorus wave. 展开更多
