In a time of the global market economy, if one wants to live harmoniously together with nature or living environment, he should not think with a theoretical mode of dualist contradiction but that of harmony and coexistence such as "wholeness of man and nature". To illustrate this point, this paper thinks The Woman Warrior and Ballad of Eternal Sorrow are two significant texts: Ballad of Eternal Sorrow tells an ordinary, self-respecting, and life-respecting story of WANG Qi-yao and the girls like her as well as the city Shanghai. They blend into one harmonious whole: The city is like the girls and the girls match the city. Likewise, The Woman Warrior highlights the significance of naturc on the girl narrator's epiphany and healthy growth. The narrator comes to understand that paradoxes are the basic existent condition of human beings and so what she needs to do is to be magnanimous and balanceable in accepting these paradoxes. 展开更多

Being categorized into New Gothic sets, Maxine Hong Kinston's The Woman Warrior has lots to do with the strange setting. While the concept of"The uncanny"is characterized by both strangeness and doubleness, to comprehend the uncanniness of The Woman Warrior more deeply, it is necessary to perceive the pervasively entailed doubleness in the story. Through analyzing the recurring images of ghost and silence, which stand for the source of the strangeness, we try to perceive the doubleness in the text from the perspective of the author's Chinese-American identity. We conclude that Kinston fabricates the multilayered uncanniness in the story through the entangled multi-doublness and constructed identity struggle. 展开更多

Asian-American literature is often identified as foreign by Asians and considered inauthentic American literature by the American mainstream. However, this minority group literature is unique in its characteristics so that it cannot be easily judged by either Asian or American norms. In order to better understand Asian-American literature,it is necessary to study how the members of Asian immigrant communities tend to form their own unique identities as Asian-Americans and to examine their literature using a new prism in light of cosmopolitanism, and not with any of the conventional perspectives.Identity formation has never been easy and natural for the bewildered and suffering Asian immigrants in the United States of America, especially for the second generation.Through the study of the Korean American writer Chang-rae Lee’s Native Speaker and the Chinese-American writer Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior,we hope to explore the possibilities and impossibilities in cultural and social identification represented in those works. Our study clearly reveals that the social and psychological conflicts that Asian immigrants experience are frequently projected on the works of the immigrant writers.A cosmopolitan prospect is often envisioned in their works as a way out for both the locals and the diasporas in today’s increasingly globalized world. 展开更多
