Workplace violence (WPV) has a spectrum of forms. In more ...The effects of Burnout in healthcare workers (HCW) are experienced by the worker, other staff, the institution and patients under their care on a daily basis. Workplace violence (WPV) has a spectrum of forms. In more extreme forms it generally is low frequency but has high impact when it occurs. Healthcare systems’ efforts to reduce Burnout are more likely to remain sustained since the impact is experienced daily and awareness is increasingly publicized. The efforts to reduce WPV are harder to sustain due to the lower frequency combined with daily competing administrative demands despite best intentions. Could efforts to reduce the overlapping organizational contributions to both HCW Burnout and WPV be a strategy to sustain prevention of WPV while preventing Burnout? A model of overlapping organizational contributions to HCW Burnout and WPV is built from supporting literature. Recommendations are made for leadership and management style interventions. Potential benefits would be higher quality and satisfaction in patient care by means of higher satisfaction in the delivery of care, recruitment and retention of excellent staff, retention of high quality institutional knowledge and reputation.展开更多
BACKGROUND Violence against healthcare workers(HCWs)in the Caribbean continues to prevail yet remains underreported.Our aim is to determine the cause,traits,and consequences of violence on HCWs in the Caribbean.AIM To...BACKGROUND Violence against healthcare workers(HCWs)in the Caribbean continues to prevail yet remains underreported.Our aim is to determine the cause,traits,and consequences of violence on HCWs in the Caribbean.AIM To determine the cause,traits,and consequences of violence on HCWs in the Caribbean.METHODS This research adopted an online cross-sectional survey approach,spanning over eight weeks(between June 6th and August 9th,2022).The survey was generated using Research Electronic Data Capture forms and followed a snowballing strategy to contact individuals using emails,social media,text messages,etc.Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the variables that influence violence,including gender,age,years of experience,institution type,and night shift frequency.RESULTS The survey was completed by 225 HCWs.Females comprised 61%.Over 51%of respondents belonged to the 21 to 35 age group.Dominica(n=61),Haiti(n=50),and Grenada(n=31)had the most responses.Most HCWs(49%)worked for government academic institutions,followed by community hospitals(23%).Medical students(32%),followed by attending physicians(22%),and others(16%)comprised the most common cadre of respondents.About 39%of the participants reported experiencing violence themselves,and 18%reported violence against colleague(s).Verbal violence(48%),emotional abuse(24%),and physical misconduct(14%)were the most common types of violence.Nearly 63%of respondents identified patients or their relatives as the most frequent aggressors.Univariate logistic regression analyses demonstrated that female gender(OR=2.08;95%CI:1.16-3.76,P=0.014)and higher frequency of night shifts(OR=2.22;95%CI:1.08-4.58,P=0.030)were associated with significantly higher odds of experiencing violence.More than 50%of HCWs felt less motivated and had decreased job satisfaction post-violent conduct.CONCLUSION A large proportion of HCWS in the Caribbean are exposed to violence,yet the phenomenon remains underreported.As a result,HCWs’job satisfaction has diminished.展开更多

Paradoxically, the job sector with the mission to care for people's health appears to be at the highest risk of WPV in Taiwan. The study analyzes respective literature on recent research which shows that nearly 65% Taiwan Residents' healthcare workers have suffered in the latest years from a WPV experience. The findings of this study may help hospitals and nurses in avoiding, reducing, and controlling incidents of WPC and WPV. The experiences of WPC and WPV become common in Taiwan Residents hospitals. BACKGROUND Most of the recent research on nightmare distress and depressive symptoms has focused on adolescents and students,with less research on the nurse population.Emergency department nurses are at high risk for ...BACKGROUND Most of the recent research on nightmare distress and depressive symptoms has focused on adolescents and students,with less research on the nurse population.Emergency department nurses are at high risk for nightmare distress and depressive symptoms,but no studies have been conducted to explore the relationship between the two;thus,further investigation is needed.AIM To understand the relationship between nightmare distress and depressive symptoms among emergency department nurses in China.METHODS A convenience sampling method was used to select 280 emergency department nurses from nine provinces,including Jiangxi,Sichuan,Jiangsu,and Shanxi Provinces.The Chinese version of the Nightmare Distress Questionnaire and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale(CES-D)were administered.RESULTS Emergency department nurses’nightmare distress scores were positively associated with depressive symptom scores(r=0.732),depressed affect(r=0.727),somatic symptoms(r=0.737),and interpersonal difficulty(r=0.647).Further multiple linear regression analyses showed that education level,work pressure,self-reported health,and CES-D scores were factors that influenced nightmare distress among Chinese emergency department nurses(P<0.05).CONCLUSION Nightmare distress is closely associated with depressive symptoms in Chinese emergency department nurses,and early intervention is recommended for professionals with this type of sleep disorder to reduce the occurrence of depressive symptoms.展开更多

We extracted typical problems from a nationwide simultaneous survey on abuse in the pediatric medical field and developed a training textbook to simulate or discuss these issues with colleagues. This study aimed to confirm the validity and usability of the contents of this training textbook. <strong>Methods:</strong> The textbook was mailed to the heads of 51 medical institutions affiliated with the Society of Ambulatory and General Pediatrics of Japan (SAGPJ) and the participants of the SAGPJ online workshop, who were asked to evaluate the textbook using a three-point scale to answer the following questions and provide opinions and impressions about the textbook. Q1. Do you think the whole content and structure of this textbook are useful? Q2. Would you use this textbook as a training textbook for all staff at your facility? A simple tabulation was performed on the evaluation using a three-point scale, while content analysis was performed on the opinions and impressions of the participants. <strong>Results:</strong> In response to Q1 and Q2, all 63 staff members from 55 facilities answered “3: Yes.” Opinions and impressions on the training textbook included “I think it can be used for workplace training” and “it is useful for exchanging various opinions among staff members and gaining a common opinion.” <strong>Conclusion:</strong> We developed a training textbook on abuse, assault, and harassment in pediatric medical settings based on a nationwide survey and confirmed the validity and usability of its contents.展开更多

In 2011, the Finnish Union of Health and Social Care Professi...According to several researches and survey findings, violence and the threat of violence are increasingly present at workplaces in the field of healthcare. In 2011, the Finnish Union of Health and Social Care Professionals--Tehy implemented a poster campaign targeted at the users of healthcare services, as well as healthcare staff. Representatives of local trade unions, as well as safety representatives, reported that the campaign was relevant. Most employers had a favorable attitude toward distributing campaign posters at the workplace. Raising this issue, which increases the mental burden of work and risks occupational safety at the workplace, helps to achieve improvements. Following the poster campaign, Tehy conducted an electronic survey in early 2012 about the impacts of the campaign among representatives of local trade unions (N= 279) and safety representatives (N = 278). The campaign resulted in some working environment improvements, as well as an increase in reporting situations involving violence. On a more worrying note, the provision of workplace-level training on managing violent situations did not increase.展开更多
