The new oxovanadium (V) complex, [PyH][VO2(L)] 1 (salicyladehyde 5-bromo salicyloylhydrazone is abbreviated as H2L; Hpy is protonated pyridine) was obtained from a refluxed solution of VOSO4 and H2L in acetonitrile-methanol-pyridine. Similarly, another new complex, [VO(L)(OCH3)] 2 was synthesized by refluxing VOSO4 and H2L in methanol-pyridine. Crystal data for 1: C19H15N3O5BrV, Mr= 496.2, monoclinic, P21/n, a = 7.1885(3), b = 9.2718(3), c = 28.803(1) A, β = 96.185(1)°, Z = 4 and V = 1908.6(1) A3; for 2: C15H12N2O5BrV, Mr= 431.1, monoclinic, P2,/n, a = 12.202(2), b = 8.045(2), c = 16.604(3) A, β = 101.29(3)°, Z = 4 and V = 1598.4(2) A3. The structures of 1 and 2 have been determined by X-ray analyses and reveal that the coordination environments of V atoms in both complexes are of square-based pyramid. Three of the four based donor atoms are from the tridentate 'ONO' donor ligand while the fourth is one terminal oxygen atom with the V(1) - O(3) distance 1.646(4) A for 1 and one -OCH3 group with the V(1)-O(3) distance 1.753(3) A for 2. The V(1)-O(4) terminals occupy the axial sites in both cases. The complexes are also characterized by IR and 1H NMR spectroscopies. 展开更多

AIM: To assess the ability of ^18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computer tomography (^18F-FDG PET/CT) to differentiate between benign and malignant portal vein thrombosis in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients.METHODS: Five consecutive patients who had HBV cirrhosis, biopsy-proven HCC, and thrombosis of the main portal vein and/or left/right portal vein on ultrasound (US), computer tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were studied with ^18F-FDG PET/CT. The presence or absence of a highly metabolic thrombus on ^18F-FDG PET/CT was considered diagnostic for malignant or benign portal vein thrombosis, respectively. All patients were followed-up monthly with US, CT or MRI. Shrinkage of the thrombus or recanalization of the vessels on US, CT or MRI during follow-up was considered to be definitive evidence of the benign nature of the thrombosis, whereas enlargement of the thrombus, disruption of the vessel wall, and parenchymal infiltration over follow-up were considered to be consistent with malignancy. ^18SF-FDG PET/CT, and US, CT or MRI results were compared.RESULTS: Follow-up (1 to 10 mo) showed signs of malignant thrombosis in 4 of the 5 patients. US, CT or MRI produced a true-positive result for malignancy in 4 of the patients, and a false-positive result in 1. ^18F-FDG PET/CT showed a highly metabolic thrombus in 4 of the 5 patients. ^18F-FDG PET/CT achieved a true-positive result in all 4 of these patients, and a true-negative result in the other patient. No false-positive result was observed using ^18F-FDG PET/CT.CONCLUSION: ^18F-FDG PET/CT may be helpful in discriminating between benign and malignant portal vein thrombi. Patients may benefit from ^18F-FDG PET/CT when portal vein thrombi can not be diagnosed exactly by US, CT or MRI. 展开更多

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis(PCI) is a rare condition that may be associated with a variety of diseases. The presenting clinical picture may be very heterogeneous and represent a challenge for the clinician. In the present paper we describe both a common and an uncommon clinical presentation of PCI and review the pertaining literature. Our cases confirm that, apart from asymptomatic cases, the clinical presentation of PCI may be widely different and suggest that a new onset of stipsis might be the presenting symptom.Diagnosis might be suggested by a simple X-ray of the digestive tract showing a change in the characteristics of the intestinal wall in two-thirds of these patients. However, one third of the patients do not have a suggestive X-ray and require a computed tomography(CT) scan/nuclear magnetic resonance that may reveal a thickened bowel wall containing gas to confirm the diagnosis and distinguish PCI from intraluminal air or submucosal fat.CT also allows the detection of additional findings that may suggest an underlying, potentially worrisome cause of PCI such as bowel wall thickening, altered contrast mucosal enhancement, dilated bowel, soft tissue stranding, ascites and the presence of portal air.Our results also point out that clinicians and endoscopists should be aware of the possible presentations of PCI in order to correctly manage the patients affected with this disease and avoid unnecessary surgeries. The increasing number of colonoscopies performed for colon cancer screening makes PCI more frequently casually encountered and/or provoked, therefore the possible endoscopic appearances of this disease should be well known by endoscopists. 展开更多
