Earth’s magnetopause is a thin boundary separating the shocked solar wind plasma from the magnetospheric plasmas, and it is also the boundary of the solar wind energy transport to the magnetosphere.Soft X-ray imaging allows investigation of the large-scale magnetopause by providing a two-dimensional(2-D)global view from a satellite.By performing 3-D global hybrid-particle-in-cell(hybrid-PIC)simulations,we obtain soft X-ray images of Earth’s magnetopause under different solar wind conditions, such as different plasma densities and directions of the southward interplanetary magnetic field. In all cases, magnetic reconnection occurs at low latitude magnetopause. The soft X-ray images observed by a hypothetical satellite are shown, with all of the following identified:the boundary of the magnetopause, the cusps, and the magnetosheath.Local X-ray emissivity in the magnetosheath is characterized by large amplitude fluctuations(up to 160%);however,the maximum line-of-sight-integrated X-ray intensity matches the tangent directions of the magnetopause well, indicating that these fluctuations have limited impact on identifying the magnetopause boundary in the X-ray images. Moreover, the magnetopause boundary can be identified using multiple viewing geometries. We also find that solar wind conditions have little effect on the magnetopause identification. The Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer(SMILE)mission will provide X-ray images of the magnetopause for the first time, and our global hybrid-PIC simulation results can help better understand the 2-D X-ray images of the magnetopause from a 3-D perspective, with particle kinetic effects considered. 展开更多

Solar wind charge exchange produces emissions in the soft X-ray energy range which can enable the study of near-Earth space regions such as the magnetopause, the magnetosheath and the polar cusps by remote sensing techniques. The Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer(SMILE)and Lunar Environment heliospheric X-ray Imager(LEXI)missions aim to obtain soft Xray images of near-Earth space thanks to their Soft X-ray Imager(SXI)instruments. While earlier modeling works have already simulated soft X-ray images as might be obtained by SMILE SXI during its mission, the numerical models used so far are all based on the magnetohydrodynamics description of the space plasma. To investigate the possible signatures of ion-kinetic-scale processes in soft Xray images,we use for the first time a global hybrid-Vlasov simulation of the geospace from the Vlasiator model. The simulation is driven by fast and tenuous solar wind conditions and purely southward interplanetary magnetic field. We first produce global X-ray images of the dayside near-Earth space by placing a virtual imaging satellite at two different locations, providing meridional and equatorial views. We then analyze regional features present in the images and show that they correspond to signatures in soft X-ray emissions of mirrormode wave structures in the magnetosheath and flux transfer events(FTEs)at the magnetopause. Our results suggest that, although the time scales associated with the motion of those transient phenomena will likely be significantly smaller than the integration time of the SMILE and LEXI imagers,mirror-mode structures and FTEs can cumulatively produce detectable signatures in the soft X-ray images. For instance,a local increase by 30%in the proton density at the dayside magnetopause resulting from the transit of multiple FTEs leads to a 12%enhancement in the line-of-sight-and time-integrated soft X-ray emissivity originating from this region.Likewise,a proton density increase by 14%in the magnetosheath associated with mirror-mode structures can result in an enhancement in the soft X-ray signal by 4%.These are likely conservative estimates, given that the solar wind conditions used in the Vlasiator run can be expected to generate weaker soft X-ray emissions than the more common denser solar wind. These results will contribute to the preparatory work for the SMILE and LEXI missions by providing the community with quantitative estimates of the effects of small-scale,transient phenomena occurring on the dayside. 展开更多

The geometry of joints has a significant influence on the mechanical properties of rocks. To simplify the curved joint shapes in rocks, the joint shape is usually treated as straight lines or planes in most laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. In this study, the computerized tomography (CT) scanning and photogrammetry were employed to obtain the internal and surface joint structures of a limestone sample, respectively. To describe the joint geometry, the edge detection algorithms and a three-dimensional (3D) matrix mapping method were applied to reconstruct CT-based and photogrammetry-based jointed rock models. For comparison tests, the numerical uniaxial compression tests were conducted on an intact rock sample and a sample with a joint simplified to a plane using the parallel computing method. The results indicate that the mechanical characteristics and failure process of jointed rocks are significantly affected by the geometry of joints. The presence of joints reduces the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS),elastic modulus, and released acoustic emission (AE) energy of rocks by 37%–67%,21%–24%,and 52%–90%,respectively.Compared to the simplified joint sample, the proposed photogrammetry-based numerical model makes the most of the limited geometry information of joints. The UCS,accumulative released AE energy, and elastic modulus of the photogrammetry-based sample were found to be very close to those of the CT-based sample. The UCS value of the simplified joint sample (i.e.38.5 MPa) is much lower than that of the CT-based sample (i.e.72.3 MPa).Additionally, the accumulative released AE energy observed in the simplified joint sample is 3.899 times lower than that observed in the CT-based sample.CT scanning provides a reliable means to visualize the joints in rocks, which can be used to verify the reliability of photogrammetry techniques. The application of the photogrammetry-based sample enables detailed analysis for estimating the mechanical properties of jointed rocks. 展开更多

To effectively replace the isotope radiation source in litho-density logging, this study presents a method for measuring the formation density and photoelectric absorption index(Pe)using a switchable X-ray tube.First, the gamma-ray litho-density logging(GLD)method for measuring formation density and Pe using chemical sources is introduced. Then,a benchmark verification based on the X-ray litho-density logging tool prototype and data published by Simon(In:Paper presented at the SPWLA 59th annual logging symposium,London,UK,2018)was carried out using Monte Carlo numerical simulations.Second, the impacts of the photoelectric effect and detector statistical error on the GLD method were analyzed. Finally, based on a theoretical analysis, the formation density and Pe measurement algorithm(double energy window(DEW)method)was improved, which was found to be suitable for X-ray litho-density logging. Moreover, the results obtained using this algorithm were compared with those obtained using the GLD method. The results indicate that owing to the impact of photoelectric effect and detector statistical error on the density energy window, the accuracy of formation density and Pe measurement using the GLD method is relatively low, with the uncertainty in formation density and Pe measurement reaching 2.620±0.047 g/cm3 and 4.090±0.580 b/e,respectively.In comparison, the DEW method can improve the accuracy of density and Pe measurement to 0.006 g/cm3 and 0.065 b/e,respectively,as the photoelectric effect in the density window is corrected using the counts in the lithology window of the energy spectrum. This study aims to provide a new theoretical foundation for processing X-ray litho-density logs in the future. 展开更多

In most collisional schemes of x-ray laser (XRL) experiments, a bow-like intensity distribution of XRL is often observed, and it is generally ascribed to the two-dimensional hydrodynamic behaviour of expanding plasma. In order to better understand its essence in physics, a newly developed two-dimensional non-equilibrium radiation hydrodynamic code XRL2D is used to simulate a quasi-steady state Ni-like Ag XRL experiment on ShenGuang-Ⅱfacility. The simulation results show that the bow-like distribution of Ni-like ions caused by over-ionization in the central area of plasma is responsible for the bow-like shape of the XRL intensity distribution observed. 展开更多

The three-dimensional(3 D) structures of pores directly affect the CH4 flow. Therefore,it is very important to analyze the3 D spatial structure of pores and to simulate the CH4 flow with the connected pores as the carrier. The result shows that the equivalent radius of pores and throats are 1-16 μm and 1.03-8.9 μm,respectively, and the throat length is 3.28-231.25 μm.The coordination number of pores concentrates around three, and the intersection point between the connectivity function and the X-axis is 3-4 μm,which indicate the macro-pores have good connectivity.During the single-channel flow, the pressure decreases along the direction of CH4 flow, and the flow velocity of CH4 decreases from the pore center to the wall.Under the dual-channel and the multi-channel flows, the pressure also decreases along the CH4 flow direction, while the velocity increases. The mean flow pressure gradually decreases with the increase of the distance from the inlet slice. The change of mean flow pressure is relatively stable in the direction horizontal to the bedding plane, while it is relatively large in the direction perpendicular to the bedding plane. The mean flow velocity in the direction horizontal to the bedding plane(Y-axis) is the largest, followed by that in the direction horizontal to the bedding plane(X-axis),and the mean flow velocity in the direction perpendicular to the bedding plane is the smallest. 展开更多

X-ray fluorescence (XRF) in combination with partial least-squares (PLS) regression was employed to analyze the ore slurry grade. Using the Monte Carlo simulation code PENELOPE, X-ray fluorescence spectra of ore samples were obtained. Good accuracy was achieved when this method was used to analyze elements with concentrations of several percent or above. It was demonstrated that the more the number of X-ray fluorescence spectra used to calibrate, the better the obtained accuracy. In this method detector resolution was found to have little or no effect on the results of quantitative analysis. The effect of the concentration of water was investigated as well, and it was found to have little influence on the results. 展开更多

This study describes the development of a cervical traction therapy simulation model that evaluates two types of the traction positions, namely the sitting position and the inclined position. An anatomically correct human skeleton model and two mechanical traction device models were constructed in simulations using a physics engine. The anterior and posterior intervertebral separations were measured at both positions with a series of traction forces (60N to 200N) and traction angles (10°? to 40°?). The result suggested that the sitting position caused the subject to lean forward and as a result led to excessive anterior compression when traction angle is over 20 degrees. The inclined position creates greater intervertebral separations on both the anterior and posterior sides than the sitting position. This suggests that the inclined position may be more effective in increasing intervertebral separation than the sitting position. 展开更多

The purpose of this article is to explore the cause of the over-response phenomenon of fiber x-ray sensor. The sensor is based on a length of PMMA fiber, whose end is filled with the scintillation material Gd_(2)O_(2)S:Tb.The Monte Carlo simulation software GEANT4 uses the phase space file provided by the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA),by irradiating the fiber x-ray sensor in the water phantom, counting the fluorescence signal of the optical fiber x-ray sensor after propagation through the fiber. In addition, the number of Cerenkov photons propagating through the fiber is also counted.Comparing this article with previous research,we believe that one of the reasons for the over-response of the fiber x-ray sensor is the non-linear response of the deposition energy of the scintillator to the fluorescence.By establishing a region of interest and counting the x-rays in this region, the simulation results show that the counted number of x-rays that may affect the fiber x-ray sensor is the biggest in the area of interest at a water depth of 5 cm.This result is close to the maximum dose point of the experimental and simulated percentage depth dose(PDD) curve of fiber x-ray sensor. Therefore, the second reason of the over-response phenomenon is believed to be fact that the inorganic materials such as Gd_(2)O_(2)S:Tb have larger effective atomic numbers,so the fiber x-ray sensors will cause more collisions with x-ray in a low energy region of 0.1 MeV-1.5 MeV. 展开更多

The generation of hollow atoms will reduce the probability of light absorption and provide a high-quality diffraction image in the experiment. In this paper, we calculated the ionization rate of the Kr atom under x-ray free-electron laser(XFEL) using Hartree–Fock–Slater model and simulated the ionization model of Kr atom using Monte–Carlo method to determine the response of the hollow atom of Kr atom to the XFEL photon energy. Calculating the correlation between the total photoionization cross-section of the ground state of Kr atom and the photon energy, we determined three particular photon energies of 1.75 ke V, 1.90 ke V, and 14.30 ke V. The dynamics simulation under the experimental condition's17.50 ke V photon energy was achieved by implementing the Monte–Carlo method and calibrating the photon flux modeling parameters. Consequently, our calculated data are more consistent with experimental phenomena than previous theoretical studies. The saturable absorption of Kr at 1.75 ke V, 1.90 ke V, 14.30 ke V, and 17.50 ke V energies was further investigated by using the optimized photon flux model theory. We compared the statistics on main ionization paths under those four specific photon energies and calculated the population changes of various Kr hollow atoms with different configurations. The results demonstrate that the population of hollow atoms produced at the critical ionization photon energy is high. Furthermore, the change of population with respect to position is smooth, which shows a significant difference between the generation mode of ions with low and high photon energies. The result is important for the study of medium-and high-Z element hollow atoms, which has substantial implications for the study of hollow atoms with medium and high charge states, as well as for the scaling of photon energy of free electron lasers. 展开更多

X-ray imaging technologies such as digital radiography(DR),is an important aspect of modern non-destructive testing and medical diagnosis.Innovative flexible X-ray detector technologies have recently been proposed and are now receiving increasing attention owing to their superior material flexibility compared with traditional flat-panel detectors. This work aims to study these innovative flexible X-ray detectors in terms of their effectiveness in DR imaging, such as detection efficiency and spatial resolution. To achieve this goal, first,a Monte Carlo model was developed and calibrated to an in-lab 150 kV DR imaging system containing a flat-panel X-ray detector.Second, the validated model was updated with various types of flexible X-ray detectors to assess their performance in nearly realistic conditions.Key parameters such as the detection efficiency pertaining to the crystal material and thickness were studied and analyzed across a broader energy range up to 662 keV.Finally, the imaging performance of the different detectors was evaluated and compared to that of the flat-panel detector in the 150 kV DR imaging system. The results show that the flexible detectors such as the CsPbBr3crystal detector deliver promising performance in X-ray imaging and can be applied to a wider range of application scenarios, especially those requiring accurate detection at challenging angles. 展开更多

A study of a nanosecond laser irradiation on the titanium-layer-buried gold planar target is presented. The timeresolved x-ray emission spectra of titanium tracer are measured by a streaked crystal spectrometer. By comparing the simulated spectra obtained by using the FLYCHK code with the measured titanium spectra, the temporal plasma states, i.e.,the electron temperatures and densities, are deduced. To evaluate the feasibility of using the method for the characterization of Au plasma states, the deduced plasma states from the measured titanium spectra are compared with the Multi-1D hydrodynamic simulations of laser-produced Au plasmas. By comparing the measured and simulated results, an overall agreement for the electron temperatures is found, whereas there are deviations in the electron densities. The experiment–theory discrepancy may suggest that the plasma state could not be well reproduced by the Multi-1D hydrodynamic simulation, in which the radial gradient is not taken into account. Further investigations on the spectral characterization and hydrodynamic simulations of the plasma states are needed. All the measured and FLYCHK simulated spectra are given in this paper as datasets. The datasets are openly available at http://www.doi.org/10.57760/sciencedb.j00113.00032. 展开更多

The double flapper-nozzle servo valve is widely used to launch and guide the equipment. Due to the large instantaneous flow rate of servo valve working under specific operating conditions, the temperature of servo valve would reach 120℃ and the valve core and valve sleeve deform in a short amount of time. So the control precision of servo valve significantly decreases and the clamping stagnation phenomenon of valve core appears. In order to solve the problem of degraded control accuracy and clamping stagnation of servo valve under large temperature difference circumstance, the numerical simulation of heat-fluid-solid coupling by using finite element method is done. The simulation result shows that zero position leakage of servo valve is basically impacted by oil temperature and change of fit clearance. The clamping stagnation is caused by warpage-deformation and fit clearance reduction of the valve core and valve sleeve. The distribution roles of the temperature and thermal-deformation of shell, valve core and valve sleeve and the pressure, velocity and temperature field of flow channel are also analyzed. Zero position leakage and electromagnet's current when valve core moves in full-stroke are tested using Electro-hydraulic Servo-valve Characteristic Test-bed of an aerospace sciences and technology corporation. The experimental results show that the change law of experimental current at different oil temperatures is roughly identical to simulation current. The current curve of the electromagnet is smooth when oil temperature is below 80℃, but the amplitude of current significantly increases and the hairy appears when oil temperature is above 80℃. The current becomes smooth again after the warped valve core and valve sleeve are reground. It indicates that clamping stagnation is caused by warpage-deformation and fit clearance reduction of valve core and valve sleeve. This paper simulates and tests the heat-fluid-solid coupling of double flapper-nozzle servo valve, and the obtained results provide the reference value for the design of double flapper-nozzle force feedback servo valve. 展开更多

Due to seasonal climate alterations, the microstructure and permeability of granite residual soil are easily affected by multiple dry-wet cycles. The X-ray micro computed tomography(micro-CT)acted as a nondestructive tool for characterizing the microstructure of soil samples exposed to a range of damage levels induced by dry-wet cycles.Subsequently, the variations of pore distribution and permeability due to drywet cycling effects were revealed based on three-dimensional(3D)pore distribution analysis and seepage simulations.According to the results, granite residual soils could be separated into four different components, namely, pores, clay, quartz, and hematite, from micro-CT images. The reconstructed 3D pore models dynamically demonstrated the expanding and connecting patterns of pore structures during drywet cycles. The values of porosity and connectivity are positively correlated with the number of dry-wet cycles, which were expressed by exponential and linear functions, respectively. The pore volume probability distribution curves of granite residual soil coincide with the χ^(2)distribution curve, which verifies the effectiveness of the assumption of χ^(2)distribution probability. The pore volume distribution curves suggest that the pores in soils were divided into four types based on their volumes,i.e.micropores,mesopores,macropores,and cracks. From a quantitative and visual perspective, considerable small pores are gradually transformed into cracks with a large volume and a high connectivity.Under the action of dry-wet cycles, the number of seepage flow streamlines which contribute to water permeation in seepage simulation increases distinctly,as well as the permeability and hydraulic conductivity. The calculated hydraulic conductivity is comparable with measured ones with an acceptable error margin in general, verifying the accuracy of seepage simulations based on micro-CT results. 展开更多

A geometrical description of square polycapillary x-ray optics and the basic theory of the transmission of x-rays are presented. A method of numerical calculation is developed based on ray-tracing theory. The method simulates the intensity distribution of x-rays propagating through slice square polycapillary x-ray optics. The simulation results are compared with the experimental results. 展开更多
