The renowned translator Yang Yi passed away in 2023.Many scholars argue that, influenced by their biological gender, female translators often employ translation methods in adherence to feminist translation or reflect characteristics typical of female translators. This study examines the translation of Wuthering Heights by Yang Yi,focusing on whether there is a definite influence of gender on translator behavior. While existing literature primarily analyzes Yang Yi’s work through a feminist lens, this research takes a broader approach.By considering the translator’s social background and translation practice, this paper challenges the assumption that her work strictly aligns with feminist translation theories.Instead, this study emphasizes the importance of considering diverse factors when interpreting translated works, moving beyond a singular gender-based standpoint. 展开更多

Background:“Yang Transforming Qi and Yin shaping”comes from“Plain Question Yin and Yang should be like the theory”.Chinese medicine believes that the imbalance of yin and yang is the cause of human diseases. One of the strengths of TCM in treating diseases is holistic regulation. The theory of“Yang transforming Qi,and Yin shaping”implies a strong holistic view.Chloasma, one of the common skin diseases, seriously affects the physical and mental health of patients due to its unclear etiology, difficult treatment and easy recurrence. The occurrence and development of chloasma are closely related to internal organs. This paper is based on the theory of internal meridian,“Yang transforming Qi,and Yin shaping”which attaches importance to the concept of“Yang Qi”,from a new understanding of the pathogenesis etiology of chloasma. Methods:The author believes that the incidence of the disease is the deficiency of Yang Qi,which can’t promote the movement of Qi and blood to nourish the face, resulting in tangible material condensation,so proposes that this disease needs to be promoted by Yang transforming Qi and warm to dissipate.Moxibustion belongs to the fire, and its warming effect can dissipate the tangible evil. Results:Combined with clinical practice and the theory of internal meridian, the author elaborated that moxibustion is one of the effective methods for treating chloasma, which provides a new way of thinking for the treatment of chloasma. Conclusion:“Yang Transforming Qi and Yin shaping”can be used to guide the treatment of chloasma. 展开更多

In ancient China, Daoist philosophers developed the concepts of qi(energy), Wu Xing(five elements), and yin(feminine, dark, negative) and yang(masculine, bright, positive) opposite forces between 200 and 600 BCE. Based on these philosophies, Zhen Jiu(acupuncture), Ben Cao(materia medica), and the practice of Qi Gong(energy optimization movements) evolved as the three interrelated therapeutic regimens of Chinese medicine(Note 1). Since the time of Zhang Qian, who discovered China's western regions in the 1st century BCE, Hai Yao(the exotic elements of materia medica from the maritime Silk Road countries), had been transmitted from the ancient land and maritime routes of the Silk Road to China in the past two millennia(Note 2). Since the late 17th century, the English East India Company, later called the British East India Company, introduced Yang Yao(opium) to the Manchu Qing Empire to balance a growing trade deficit for tea export from China to the British Empire. After the First Opium War ended in 1842, enterprising expatriate chemists and druggists in the treaty ports imported Xi Yao(modern medicines from the Western world) for sale to the merchant navy and the local market. From the second half of the 19th century onwards, both Hai Yao and Xi Yao have become a fully integrated part of modern China's armamentarium for the Chinese medicine and Western hospitals and retail pharmacy sectors. This paper articulates the journey of adoption of exotic elements of materia medica from the ancient land and sea routes of the Silk Road, including the western regions and the rest of the world in the past two millennia. Opium traders, ship surgeons, medical and pharmaceutical missionaries, enterprising traders, and policymakers together transformed Ben Cao into Xi Yao during the late Manchu Qing dynasty and the early Nationalist Era. 展开更多

Objective:To explore the kidney yang deficiency pattern(KYDP)in a chronic kidney disease(CKD)rat model and the mechanisms underlying the effects of Zhenwu decoction(ZWD)by conducting tran-scriptomic and metabolomic analyses. Methods:Adriamycin(ADR)combined with hydrocortisone(HC)was used to induce CKD with KYDP in rats.ADR was injected into the tail vein twice.HC was injected intramuscularly for 8 weeks.ZWD was administered by gavage for 8 weeks. The general condition was observed,24-h urine protein was detected, serum corticosterone, triiodothyronine, thyroxine,TSH,testosterone,cAMP,and cGMP levels were determined, and pathological analysis was conducted.Transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses were conducted to screen differentially expressed genes(DEGs),differentially expressed metabolites(DEMs),and differentially expressed pathways(DEPs).The core DEMs and DEGs were input to Metab-oanalyst 5.0 to identify the pathways affected by ZWD.Results:In the HC group,KYDP symptoms were observed.Compared with control group, the levels of 24-h urine protein,TSH,and cGMP significantly increased(all P<0.01),and corticosterone, triiodothyronine, thyroxine, and cAMP significantly decreased(all P<0.01)in the HC group. After ZWD intervention, the levels of above-mentioned indicators could be reversed to some extent.Pathological analysis in the HC group revealed kidney lesions.DEGs in the ZWD group were mainly associated with pathways such as nucleotide synthesis and endocrine pathways. In the ZWD group, differences in biosynthesis of unsat-urated fatty acids and butanoate metabolism were observed. The following pathways were significantly affected by ZWD:arachidonic acid metabolism, valine, leucine, and isoleucine biosynthesis, linoleic acid metabolism, and alpha-linolenic acid metabolism. Conclusion:ZWD can be used to treat KYDP in CKD through regulating arachidonic acid metabolism, valine, leucine, and isoleucine biosynthesis, linoleic acid metabolism, and alpha-linolenic acid metabolism. 展开更多

To explore how manganese affects the antioxidant system and the expression levels of related genes of“Hong yang”seedlings, the leaves of its tissue cultured seedlings were taken as test materials, and single factor treatment was performed by changing the manganese chloride(MnCl_(2)·4H_(2)O)solution concentration when spraying the leaves. The expression levels of Mn-SOD,POD64 and POD27 genes in leaves were quantitatively analyzed by real-time quantitative PCR(qRT-PCR)at different determination times.Meanwhile, the contents of malondial-dehyde(MDA),hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2)),the activities of antioxidant enzymes, including catalase(CAT),peroxidase(POD),and superoxide dismutase(SOD).The results showed that the SOD,CAT,POD,ascorbate peroxidase(APX),and reduced glutathione(GSH)activities in leaves were the highest at 12 h post-treatment with 50μM MnCl_(2)·4H_(2)O.Furthermore,the contents of MDA and H_(2)O_(2) in leaves also peaked when the concentration of H_(2)O_(2) is 50μM,which is the minimum value.Additionally at 50μM Mn^(2+),the Mn-SOD and POD27 expression was up-regulated as compared to the control, which promoted the expression of their respective enzyme activities.However,POD64 expression increased with the increasing Mn^(2+) concentration.Therefore,50μM is the optimal concentration of Mn when exogenously applied on“Hong yang”,which improve the antioxidant enzyme activity and regulate the plant’s physiological and biochemical functions. 展开更多

The present study investigated the effect of treatment with methanolic extracts of Yin- and Yang-Chinese tonifying herbs on concanavalin A (Con A)/lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated splenocyte proliferation (adaptive immunity) and natural killer (NK) cell activity (innate immunity) in an ex vivo mouse model. The results indicated that while treatment with most Yin herbal extracts potentiated the Con A/LPS-stimulated splenocyte proliferation, only Yang (but not Yin) herbal extracts stimulated NK cell activity. The differential effects of Yin- and Yang-Chinese tonifying herbs on innate and adaptive immunity are consistent with the Chinese medicine theory which depicts the Yin and Yang functional components of Zheng Qi (vital energy), with the Yang component being responsible for the first line of defense against invading microorganisms (i.e., innate immunity) and the Yin oner serving as a follow-up defensive response (adaptive immunity). 展开更多

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is characterized by the accumulation of circulating immature blasts that exhibit uncontrolled growth, lack the ability to undergo normal differentiation, and have decreased sensitivity to apoptosis. Accumulating evidence shows the bone marrow (BM) niche is critical to the maintenance and retention of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), including leukemia stem cells (LSC), and an increasing number of studies have demonstrated that crosstalk between LSC and the stromal cells associated with this niche greatly influences leukemia initiation, progression, and response to therapy. Undeniably, stromal cells in the BM niche provide a sanctuary in which LSC can acquire a drug-resistant phenotype and thereby evade chemotherapy- induced death. Yin and Yang, the ancient Chinese philosophical concept, vividly portrays the intricate and dynamic interactions between LSC and the BM niche. In fact, LSC-induced microenvironmental reprogramming contributes significantly to leukemogenesis. Thus, identifying the critical signaling pathways involved in these interactions will contribute to target optimization and combinatorial drug treatment strategies to overcome acquired drug resistance and prevent relapse following therapy. In this review, we describe some of the critical signaling pathways mediating BM niche-LSC interaction, including SDFI/CXCL12, Wnt/β-catenin, VCAM/VLA-4/NF-κB, CD44, and hypoxia as a newly-recognized physical determinant of resistance, and outline therapeutic strategies for overcoming these resistance factors. 展开更多

By using mathematical reasoning, this paper demonstrates the mathematical intervening principle: “Virtual disease is to fill his mother but real disease is to rush down his son” (虚则补其母, 实则泄其子) and “Strong inhibition of the same time, support the weak” (抑强扶弱) based on “Yin Yang Wu Xing” Theory in image mathematics of Traditional Chinese Mathematics (TCMath). We defined generalized relations and generalized reasoning, introduced the concept of steady multilateral systems with two non-compatibility relations, and discussed its energy properties. Later based on the intervention principle in image mathematics of TCMath and treated the research object of the image mathematics as a steady multilateral system, it has been proved that the mathematical intervening principle is true. The kernel of this paper is the existence and reasoning of the non-compatibility relations in steady multilateral systems, and it accords with the oriental thinking model. 展开更多

Yin Yang 1(YY1) is a multi-functional transcription factor that regulates gene expression in a range of cell types, including neurons. It controls neuronal differentiation,as well as neuronal specification and migration during the development of the mammalian nervous system.Besides,YY1 also mediates the transcription of genes that are required for neuronal survival. An impairment of the transcriptional function of YY1 causes neuronal death. This review summarizes recent research findings that unveil the dysfunction of YY1 in multiple neurodegenerative disorders. The expression of disease proteins perturbs the function of YY1 via distinct molecular mechanisms, including recruitment to protein aggregates, protein degradation and aberrant nuclear/cytoplasmic shuttling.Understanding the pathogenic roles of YY1 will further broaden our knowledge of the disease mechanisms in distinct neurodegenerative disorders. 展开更多

BACKGROUND: The expression of ubiquitin and energy-associated protein can provoke migraines. Studies have suggested that expression is closely linked to "hyperactivity of liver-yang theory" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), as well as the function of periphery sympathetic nerve medulla. OBJECTIVE: To observe proteomic changes in a rat migraine model with regard to hyperactivity of liver-yang when treated with Chinese herbs to calm the liver and suppress hyperactive yang compound. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: A randomized controlled study. This study was performed at the laboratory of Institute of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Institute of Human Reproduction and Stem Cell Engineering and Key Laboratory of Cancer Proteomics of Ministry of Health, Xiangya Hospital Affiliated to Central South University between September 2006 and July 2007. MATERIALS: Thirty, male, healthy, Sprague-Dawley rats, aged eight weeks, were included in the final analysis. Aconite, to calm the liver and suppress hyperactive yang compound, was provided by the Dispensary of Traditional Chinese medicine, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University. A physiological electronic stimulator, type SDQ-1, was provided by Bengbu Practical Institute of Technology. The left trigeminal ganglion was localized and stimulated for 10 minutes, and the rats were orally administered an aconite concoction to establish a rat migraine model with hyperactivity of liver-yang. METHODS: Rats were randomly divided into a normal control group, model group, and TCM treatment group, with 10 rats in each group. The TCM treatment group was orally treated to calm the liver and suppress the hyperactive yang compound once a day for 28 days. In contrast, the model group and normal group were orally administered the same amount of distilled water once a day for 28 days. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The total proteins from adrenal glands of the three groups were separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE), and 2-DE images were analyzed by PDQuest 7.0 software. Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) was used to obtain peptide mass fingerprints of the differential proteins. Databases were searched to identify the proteins, RESULTS: A total of 30 rats were included in the final analysis. Reproducible 2-DE patterns from rat adrenal gland of the three groups were obtained. Compared with the normal group, nine proteins were down-regulated and five proteins were up-regulated in the model group; however, these expressions returned to normal, or near normal levels, in the TCM treatment group. A total of eight differentially expressed proteins were identified: glycogen phosphorylase, ATP synthase D chain, isovaleryl-CoA dehydrogenase, ubiquitin, Annexin-3, Annexin-A1, Peroxirdoxin-II, and heat shock protein-27. CONCLUSION: Liver calming and suppression of the hyperactive yang compound may up-regulate expression of proteins related to energy metabolism and the ubiquitin system. Compounds that are used to treat migraines may contribute to protein functions in the peripheral sympathetic nervous system. 展开更多
