The Dao of Mathematical Creativity,Symmetry Theories,and Yin-Yang Philosophy With Their Classroom Applications

This paper introduces creativity,one of the significant features in maths.The creative mathematical beauty of symmetry and asymmetry are worth investigating in the practicing of Taichi.Symmetrical variances make the real world.Symmetry can be regarded as a kind of mirroring,like the line symmetry,the mirror image of the other parts,or rotational symmetry.Such characteristics can be vividly demonstrated in the traditional Chinese philosophical yin-yang theory(YY).The accompanying of male and female reveals the friendly cooperative relationship.YY reflects the counterparts of vacancy and firm,inhale and exhale,noun and verb,theory and practice,light and heavy,slow and fast,the pace,the sound effect in the classroom.Such an analysis is undergone about yin and yang in Yi School and Dao De Ching(DDC).Furthermore,there are detailed arguments of the symmetric nature of every verse of DDC,revealing the cultural value of the language.Their applications in the class admit the recognition under the new liberal arts project by China’s Ministry of Education.Yet,the integration of research and teaching is required to go further.

Gender Relations in Kjell Askildsen’s A Lovely Place From the Perspective of Chinese Yin-Yang Theory

A Lovely Place(2019)is a collection of the Norwegian writer Kjell Askildsen’s short stories that is translated from German into Chinese by Yang Zhizi.It contains 18 short stories,whose male characters are mainly analyzed by researchers.The paper argues that female characters are playing an indispensable role in compensating the males’life stories and enlightening their worldviews according to Chinese Yin-Yang theory.The females can be classified into the following three groups in terms of their important relations to the males.Firstly,the female is the male’s companion in a certain part of the latter’s life.Secondly,the female facilitates the male’s intellectual growth either spontaneously or purposefully.Thirdly,the female struggles for independence to set an example for the male.The female characters in A Lovely Place present such femininity as beauty,energy,nostalgia,sentimentality,motherhood,etc.,stimulate the males to reflect on their own identities and fulfill their muscularity,and function as the genuine protagonists in the collection as far as the gender relations are concerned.

The Chinese Yin-Yang Thinking in Antoni Tàpies’Artistic Creation

The writings and artistic works of Antoni Tàpies(2009;2011)mirror the influences of the cosmic vision of the Chinese yin-yang.Signs,numbers,and creative procedures related to this correlative thought prevail in his art.Tàpies integrated different iconological codes from the ancient Chinese thinking into his art to question the existential meaning of the universe and to express his thoughts on the cultural and socio-political controversies of his time.In other words,the images,media,and techniques that he utilized for his works were extensions of his life experiences intertwined with various socio-historical facts and his personal feelings.

Homeostasis Research Model Based on Yin-Yang Theory:Five Examples

In recent years,the ancient yin-yang theory has been gradually adopted by modern researchers,especially European and American scholars,and it has also been applied to modern scientific research on sleep,viruses,metabolism,cancer,genes,autoimmune diseases,and so on.It is very promising and fruitful results have been reported.However,the understanding of the connotations of yin-yang theory is not sufficient and thorough enough in these studies.If we understand and apply yin-yang theory more comprehensively,it may provide us with additional potential mechanisms and research directions worthy of study.On the basis of promoting a comprehensive understanding of all three connotations of yin-yang theory,this review attempts to illustrate this theory,summarize its applications in modern scientific research,and reveal the potential research direction of modern medicine.

From Osteoblast to Osteoclast: New Insights of Yin-Yang Theory in Bone Remodeling

Yin-Yang theory plays critical role in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) science. However, there are many competing interpretations of YinYang theory in the context with the development in biology, and no consensus has been established. Here we first propose that osteoblast should be regarded as Yin, while osteoclast should be considered as Yang in bone remodeling compartment(BRC). Our conceptions are consistent with the following key findings: 1)osteoblast and osteoclast both derive from the embryonic ectoderm; 2)osteoblast and osteoclast work collaboratively in BRC to maintain bone homeostasis; 3)the activities of osteoblast and osteoclast are coupled to remain dynamic balance;4)osteoblast and osteoclast exert their function in ceaseless successions. Moreover, we argue that Yin-Yang relationships exist between osteoblast and osteoclast: osteoblast secretes the receptor activator for nuclear factor-κB ligand(RANKL) and the monocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor(M-CSF) and osteoprotegerin(OPG) to positively or negatively regulate osteoclast differentiation and function.Meanwile, osteoclast and bone resorption in turn release cytokines, such as transforming growth factor-β(TGF-β), insulin-like growth factor-1(IGF-1) from bone matrix, to regulate osteoblast differentiation and function. Next, the unlimited division of Yin-Yang can be applied to divide sublevel of Yin-Yang inside osteoblast or osteoclast. Finally, Yin-Yang relationship of osteoblast and osteoclast is relative. Therefore, we come into the conclusion that the relationships between osteoblast and osteoclast as established in contemporary biology reflect the classic Yin-Yang in bone remodeling. The new Yin-Yang concepts of osteoblast and osteoclast may strengthen basic theory and clinical practice in TCM.

The New Understanding of Yin and Yang of TCM Physiological Model

From the view of the physical model,structure and function characteristics,the material basis and clinical application of Yin-Yang theory,analysing and thinking combined with modern medical theory,this paper finds that as one of the most basic and important theory of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),Yin-Yang theory reveals the understanding of human physiology in TCM,which has many consensuses with modern medicine,so it is worth studying further.

New Understanding of the Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) plays an important role in the medical system used in health care and treatment of diseases.This article reviews the basic theory of TCM based on its formation and contributions.Two new personal points are proposed as follows:Six Zang(六脏) theory and deemphasization of the five-element theory.The basic theory of Chinese herbs is also discussed.

Yin-Yang and Zheng:Exported from Chinese Medicine

Chinese medicine （CM） basic theory differs substantially from modernmedicine in methodology. CM views the healthy human body as an entity in yin-yang equilibrium. CM practitioners typically diagnose patients with ＂Zheng （CMsyndrome）＂-yin-yang status of specific organs, and the ultimate goal of treatment inCM is to restore the yin-yang balance. This concept might seem strange to Westernperceptions; however, CM philosophy and methodology have been graduallyaccepted and used in the West. There is growing evidence from prestigiousworldwide journals like Nature, Science and Cell indicating that CM theory isbecoming an important component in dealing with health issues in the West.

A Mathematical Model for the Deficiency-Excess Mechanism of Yin-Yang in Five Viscera

To raise traditional medicine to a higher level of scientific research, a mathematical model has been proposed using symbolic notations and operators to describe several disease symptoms generally recognized in traditional medicine. Even though this model to a certain degree offers a mathematical approach to identify the relationships between yin-yang and the five viscera, it is not an efficient means of explaining the pathology in traditional medicine due to its use of superfluous notations and definitions. In this paper, we introduce two concise operators, a self-development operator and an action operator： the former describes the effect of a viscus in the unbalanced state on other viscera： the latter explains the engendering and restraining relationships between the two viscera. These tools are useful to elucidate the interactions among the states of the five viscera based on yin-yang and the five elements theory. Our mathematical model with these two operators facilitates description for the scheme of deficiency-excess of yin-yang in the five viscera. Accordingly, we have mathematically refined the existing results and shown clinical applications as well.
