In the f-plane model, the shelf topography, continuous stratification, and Richardson number-dependent eddy coefficients are considered. The results show that the coastal up-welling off Zhejiang in summer can be divided into two regions, the nearshore one (Region A) and the offshore one (Region B). In Region A, the alongshore wind stress has more important effect on the coastal upwelling while in Region B, the upwelling is mainly induced by the Taiwan Warm Current. The results also suggest that the formation of coastal front off Zhejiang in summer is closely related to the strength of the coastal upwelling in Region A.展开更多

The results are as follows:(1) a cold water patch was observed in the middle layer of sections from 10 to 25 m, and a weak upwelling was observed at the upper layer near the central Zhejiang coast;(2) several thermoclines, inverted thermoclines, and haloclines were observed in the survey area;(3) the Taiwan Warm Current Water(TWCW) climbing from the slope towards the survey area affected the thermocline, making it thinner and intensified; however, the TWCW was not strong enough to break through the thermocline to reach the sea surface.展开更多

These results indicate that sensitive grain size groups can be used as a sedimentary proxy to reconstruct the evolution of the East Asian Winter Monsoon(EAWM). The studies have been carried out mainly in the northern and middle portions of the Zhejiang-Fujian coastal mud, however, similar research in the southern portion and the comparison between sedimentary proxy and modern measured data of EAWM are lacking. In this paper, we focused on a sedimentary record of the past 100 years with an enhanced resolution of 1.8 years. Investigations of the southern end of the Zhejiang-Fujian coastal mud area were conducted on the basis of 210 Pb chronology, grain-size analysis and chemical element analysis. The correspondence between the mean grain size(Mz) of sediment sensitive grain size and the measured EAWM was confirmed for the first time. We found that during the recent 100 years, the variation of the mean grain size of the sensitive population in the southern portion of the Zhejiang-Fujian mud was mainly controlled by the EAWM intensity changes; and not directly related to changes in the sediment discharge from Datong station of the Changjiang River(DTSD). Finally, recent changes in the content of heavy metals in study area refl ect the impact of human activities on the environment.展开更多

The paper showed that the sediment along the coast of Zhejiang mainly comes from the Changjiang Estuary through analysing the time and space variations of suspended sediment, the features of sediment and the sedimentary transport. The Changjiang River is the largest river system in China, its sediment to the sea amounting to 468×106t. The sediment during summer transports mainly eastward, and is affected by the water body with high temperature, salinity and transparency; the winter season is the period with high sediment concentration. The sediment of the Changjiang Estuary transports together with the longshore current of the East China Sea southward, the southern boundary can reach the sea region approximately 500 km from the Shacheng Harbour. The accretion rate seaward has been about 10 - 30 m since the 16th century. The sediment movement combined the longitudinal with the lateral, so that the muddy flats progress continuously seaward under the construction of the seashore profile .展开更多
