Changes in cortical activation patterns accompanying somatosensory recovery in a stroke patient: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study

The somatosensory system plays a crucial role in executing precise movements by providing sensory feedback （Farrer et al., 2003; Rabin and Gordon, 2004）. Somatosensory dys- function is a common problem following stroke. In partic- ular, somatosensory impairments, such as impairment in touch, proprioception, light touch, and vibration have been frequently observed （Carey et al., 1993; Sullivan and Hed- man, 2008; Tyson et al., 2008）. Patients with somatosensory dysfunction show negative effects on motor control, and it sometimes becomes difficult to perform daily activities independently.

A Study of the Accompanying Relationships between Uranium and Oil

It is not occasional that uranium deposits and oil accumulation occur in the same depression in the Erlian basin, Inner Mongolia. Some evidences show certain relations between uranium and oil in origin. This paper discusses and analyses the evidence for the relations between uranium deposits and oil and gas accumulation in terms of spatial distribution, geology, hydrochemistry and geochemistry. The paper also deals with the mechanism of the formation of uranium deposits and points out that it is of significance to use uranium as an indicator to search for oil and vice versa.

Controlling marine pollution caused by hydrocarbons spilling from oil tanker accidents and oil rigs is urgently needed.Conventional pollution control vessels currently in service worldwide do not meet certain safety criteria,storage capacities,and response times owing to their technical shortcomings.This study proposes a new concept of multimission and autonomous antipollution vessels capable of acting quickly and efficiently to counter such pollution threats.The objective of this study is to carry out a total and rapid recovery of the spilled oil slick in complete safety.Hence,optimizing the bulbous bow adapted to the pollution control vessel during its displacement is necessary to horizontally straighten the accompanying waves formed around the hull and to laminate the flow upstream of the side openings for the recovery of spilled oil.This optimization improves the nautical qualities specific to this ship to reduce the total resistance to progress and to standardize the flow upstream of the side openings to allow the collection of spilled oil at high speed.This optimization study can open a field of application for the construction of modern multi-mission pollution control vessels.Tests in hull basins will be planned to validate and adjust the results obtained from the simulations.

CLINICAL INVESTIGATION OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE AND PHARMACY IN TREATING RESPIRATORY TRACT INFECTIONS IN AIDS

Based on the difference in severity of the disease and complications, 80 cases of acquired immune-deficiency syndrome (AIDS) accompanied with cough were divided into 2 groups: One treated by traditional Chinese medicine (TCM group), including 58 cases and the other treated by Integrated Chinese and Western medicine (integrated group), 22 cases. The therapeutic results show that in the TCM group there were 18 cases (31.03%) with clinical cure of the respiratory tract infection, 7 cases with therapeutic effect (12.07%) and 33 cases without any effect (56.90%), for a total rate of 43.10% therapeutic effectiveness; while in the integrated group there were 6 cases with clinical cure (27.27%), 2 cases with therapeutic effect (9.09%) and 14 cases without any effect (63.64%), the total rate of therapeutic effectiveness being 36.36%, slightly lower than in the TCM group and possibly related to greater severity of the disease or complications.

Automatic Accompaniment to Arab Vocal Improvisation: From Technical to Commercial Perspectives

In this multidisciplinary study, the main research question was how to improve the value of entrepreneurial initiatives that provide the web service of automatic accompaniment to Arab singing. As an example and case study, we considered the Mawaweel website that offered an automatic accompaniment to Arab vocal improvisation as a main service. After overviewing the website, we conducted a survey examining the satisfaction of its visitors in regard to presentation and quality of service. It was found that the Mawaweel website had potential to achieve success as the majority of the 22 respondents expressed general satisfaction after their first visit to the website, with an average rate of 75%. However, respondents’ ratings were strict when discussing specific aspects about the website presentation and service quality, and the means of average rates were 68.32% and 50.23% respectively. The standard deviations of average rates were 15.70% and 19.13%, respectively. This revealed a sense of inhomogeneity in the values of the different aspects of the website presentation, and an expanded sense of inhomogeneity in the quality of the different services delivered by the website. We then compared the Mawaweel website to other websites and proposed specific improvements to the aspects with average rate below 50%.

New Superconductivity Dome in LaFeAsO1-xFx Accompanied by Structural Transition

High-temperature superconductivity is often found in the vicinity of antiferromagnetism. This is also true in LaFeAsOl-xFx （x ≤ 0.2,） and many other iron-based superconductors, which leads to proposals that supercon- ductivity is mediated by fluctuations associated with the nearby magnetism. Here we report the discovery of a new superconductivity dome without low-energy magnetic fluctuations in LaFeAsO1-xFx with 0.25 ≤ x ≤ 0.75, where the maximal critical temperature Tc at Xopt =0.5-0.55 is even higher than that at x ≤0.2. By nuclear magnetic resonance and transmission electron microscopy, we show that a C4 rotation symmetry-breaking struc- tural transition takes place for x 〉 0.5 above To. Our results point to a new paradigm of high temperature superconductivity.

Discontinuous slope failures and pore-water pressure variation

Field experiments were conducted under artificial rainfalls to investigate the processes of soil failures on slope.It is found that the failures were temporally discontinuous and spatially discrete,with a wide range of magnitudes,accompanied by variations of soil moisture and pore-water pressure.Specifically,the experiments indicate that soil failures are more likely to occur on slope with high content of fine particles;the pore-pressure varies in response to soil failures in that the failures evidently affect the pore of the underlying soil.Migration of fine particles from upper to lower part of the slope also impacts the pore-water pressure variations in the slope profile.It is concluded that soil heterogeneity has a significant effect on variation in pore-water pressure,and fine particles transportation influences the building of pore-water pressure,as well as the mass depth,initial porosity,which is key to understanding the spatial characteristics of slope failures.
