This paper numerically investigates the radio wave scattering by the artificial acoustic disturbance in the atmospheric boundary layer. The numerical model is based on the finitedifference time-domain(FDTD) method for radio wave propagation and fluid simulation for atmospheric disturbance by acoustics waves. The characteristics of radio wave scattering propagation in the artificial acoustic perturbations are investigated by this numerical model. The numerical simulation results demonstrate that the radio wave propagation scattered by acoustic scatterer has the characteristic of forward tropospheric scatter. When the radio waves are scattered, they distribute in all directions; a majority of radio waves continues to propagate along the original direction, and only a small part of the energy is scattered. For the same acoustic scatterer, if we merely change the radio wave emission elevation, the horizontal spans of forward scattering radio wave packets centers gradually decrease with the increasing of emission elevations; and the energy of wave packets increases firstly and then decreases with launching elevation, reaching the maximum at a certain angle. If we merely change the wave emitting position, the horizontal spans decrease with the increasing of emission positions, and the energy of wave packets also increases firstly and then decreases with launch position, reaching the maximum at a certain position. This approach can be very promising for atmospheric scatter communications. 展开更多

Target strength(TS)and circular synthetic aperture sonar(CSAS)images provide essential information for active acoustic detection and recognition of non-cooperative unmanned undersea vehicles(UUVs),which pose a significant threat to underwater preset facilities. To access them,we propose an iterative physical acoustics(IPA)-based method to simulate the multiple acoustic scattered fields on rigid surfaces in high-frequency cases. It uses the Helmholtz integral equation with an appropriate Green's function in terms of the Neumann series, and then incorporates the ideas of triangulation and iteration into a numerical implementation. Then two approximate analytic formulae with precise physical meanings are derived to predict the TS and CSAS images of concave targets, respectively. There are no restrictions on the surface's curvature and the order of multiple scattering. The method is validated against the finite element method(FEM)for acoustic scattering from a sphere segment and against an experiment involving an X-rudder UUV's stern. On this basis,we simulate and analyze the TS and CSAS images of an X-rudder UUV.In addition, the influence of the angle of adjacent rudders on the multiple scattering characteristics is discussed. Results show that this method can potentially predict accurate UUV features, especially the multiple scattered features. 展开更多

This paper proposes amodified formulation of the singular boundarymethod(SBM)by introducing the combined Helmholtz integral equation formulation(CHIEF)and the self-regularization technique to exterior acoustics. In the SBM,the concept of the origin intensity factor(OIF)is introduced to avoid the singularities of the fundamental solutions. The SBM belongs to the meshless boundary collocation methods. The additional use of the CHIEF scheme and the self-regularization technique in the SBM guarantees the unique solution of the exterior acoustics accurately and efficiently.Consequently,by using the SBM coupled with the CHIEF scheme and the self-regularization technique, the accuracy of the numerical solution can be improved, especially near the corresponding internal characteristic frequencies.Several numerical examples of two-dimensional and threedimensional benchmark examples about exterior acoustics are used to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method. The proposed numerical results are compared with the analytical solutions and the solutions obtained by the other numerical methods. 展开更多

This article compares the isotropic and anisotropic TV regularizations used in inverse acoustic scattering. It is observed that compared with the traditional Tikhonov regularization, isotropic and anisotropic TV regularizations perform better in the sense of edge preserving. While anisotropic TV regularization will cause distortions along axes. To minimize the energy function with isotropic and anisotropic regularization terms, we use split Bregman scheme. The acoustical scattering cross section is usually employed to evaluate the scattering ability of the bubbles when they are excited by the incident acoustic waves. This parameter is strongly related to many important applications of performance prediction for search sonar or underwater telemetry, acoustical oceanography, acoustic cavitation, volcanology, and medical and industrial ultrasound. In the present paper, both the analytical and numerical analysis results of the acoustical scattering cross section of a single bubble under multi-frequency excitation are obtained. The nonlinear characteristics(e.g.,harmonics, subharmonics, and ultraharmonics) of the scattering cross section curve under multi-frequency excitation are investigated compared with single-frequency excitation. The influence of several paramount parameters(e.g., bubble equilibrium radius, acoustic pressure amplitude, and acoustic frequencies) in the multi-frequency system on the predictions of scattering cross section is discussed. It is shown that the combination resonances become significant in the multi-frequency system when the acoustic power is big enough, and the acoustical scattering cross section is promoted significantly within a much broader range of bubble sizes and acoustic frequencies due to the generation of more resonances. 展开更多

In this paper, we consider the numerical treatment of an inverse acoustic scattering problem that involves an impenetrable obstacle embedded in a layered medium. We begin by employing a modified version of the well known <em>factorization method</em>, in which a computationally effective numerical scheme for the reconstruction of the shape of the scatterer is presented. This is possible, due to a <em>mixed reciprocity principle</em>, which renders the computation of the Green function at the background medium unnecessary. Moreover, to further refine our inversion algorithm, an efficient Tikhonov parameter choice technique, called <em>Improved Maximum Product Criterion</em> (IMPC) is exploited. Our regularization parameter is computed via a fast iterative algorithm which requires no <em>a priori</em> knowledge of the noise level in the far-field data. Finally, the effectiveness of IMPC is illustrated with various numerical examples. 展开更多

Contactless manipulation of multi-scale objects using the acoustic vortex(AV) tweezers offers tremendous perspectives in biomedical applications. However,it is still hindered by the weak acoustic radiation force(ARF) and torque(ART)around the vortex center.By introducing the elevation angle to the planar transducers of an N-element ring array, the weakfocused acoustic vortex(WFAV) composed of a main-AV and N paraxial-AVs is constructed to conduct a large-scale object manipulation.Different from the traditional focused AV(FAV) generated by a ring array of concave spherical transducers,a much larger focal region of the WFAV is generated by the main lobes of the planar transducers with the size inversely associated with the elevation angle. With the pressure simulation of the acoustic field, the capability of the rotational object driving in the focal plane for the WFAV is analyzed using the ARF and the ART exerted on an elastic ball based on acoustic scattering. With the experimental system built in water, the generation of the WFAV is verified by the scanning measurements of the acoustic field and the capability of object manipulation is also analyzed by the rotational trapping of floating particles in the focal plane. The favorable results demonstrate the feasibility of large-scale rotational manipulation of objects with a strengthened ART and a reduced acousto-thermal damage to biological tissues, showing a promising prospect for potential applications in clinical practice. 展开更多

To solve the difficulty of generating an ideal Bessel beam,an simplified annular transducer model is proposed to study the axial acoustic radiation force(ARF)and the corresponding negative ARF(pulling force)exerted on centered elastic spheres for acoustic-vortex(AV)beams of arbitrary orders.Based on the theory of acoustic scattering, the axial distributions of the velocity potential and the ARF for AV beams of different orders generated by the annular transducers with different physical sizes are simulated. It is proved that the pulling force can be generated by AV beams of arbitrary orders with multiple axial regions. The pulling force is more likely to exert on the sphere with a smaller k0a(product of the wave number and the radius)for the AV beam with a bigger topological charge due to the strengthened off-axis acoustic scattering. The pulling force decreases with the increase of the axial distance for the sphere with a bigger k0a.More pulling force areas with wider axial regions can be formed by AV beams using a bigger-sized annular transducer. The theoretical results demonstrate the feasibility of generating the pulling force along the axes of AV beams using the experimentally applicable circular array of planar transducers, and suggest application potentials for multi-position stable object manipulations in biomedical engineering. 展开更多

This article proposes a finite element model (FEM) for predicting the acoustic scattering from an encapsulated microbubble near rigid boundary. The validity of the model is first examined by comparing the acoustic nonlinear response of a free microbubble with that obtained by the Church model. Then this model is used to investigate the effect of the rigid boundary on acoustic scattering signals from microbubble. The results indicate that the resonance frequency decreases while the oscillation amplitude increases as the microbubble approaches the rigid boundary. In addition, the fundamental component of the acoustic scattering signal is enhanced compared with that of the free microbubble. 展开更多

This paper is concerned with inverse acoustic scattering in an inhomogeneous medium with a conductive boundary condition and the unknown buried impenetrable objects inside.Using a variational approach,we establish the well-posedness of the direct problem. For the inverse problem,we shall numerically reconstruct the inhomogeneous medium from the far-field data for different kinds of cases. For the case when a Dirichlet boundary condition is imposed on the buried object, the classical factorization method proposed in[1]is justified as valid for reconstructing the inhomogeneous medium from the far-field data. For the case when a Neumann boundary condition is imposed on the buried object, the classical factorization method of[1]cannot be applied directly, since the middle operator of the factorization of the far-field operator is only compact. In this case,we develop a modified factorization method to locate the inhomogeneous medium with a conductive boundary condition and the unknown buried objects. Some numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate the practicability of the inversion algorithms developed. 展开更多

Acoustic scattering as the perturbation of an incident acoustic field from an arbitrary object is a critical part of the targetrecognition process in synthetic aperture sonar(SAS)systems. The complexity of scattering models strongly depends on the size and structure of the scattered surface. In accurate scattering models including numerical models, the computational cost significantly increases with the object complexity. In this paper,an efficient model is proposed to calculate the acoustic scattering from underwater objects with less computational cost and time compared with numerical models, especially in 3D space. The proposed model, called texture element method(TEM),uses statistical and structural information of the target surface texture by employing non-uniform elements described with local binary pattern(LBP)descriptors by solving the Helmholtz integral equation. The proposed model is compared with two other well-known models, one numerical and other analytical, and the results show excellent agreement between them while the proposed model requires fewer elements. This demonstrates the ability of the proposed model to work with arbitrary targets in different SAS systems with better computational time and cost, enabling the proposed model to be applied in real environment. 展开更多

A nonlinear optimization method was developed to solve the inverse problem of determining the shape of a hard target from the knowlegde of the far-field pattern of the acoustic scattering wave,it was achieved by solving independently an ill-posed linear system and a well-posed minimization problem.Such a separate numerical treatment for the ill-posedness and nonlinearity of the inverse problem makes the numerical implementation of the proposed method very easy and fast since there only involves the solution of a small scale minimization problem with one unknown function in the nonlinear optimization step for determining the shape of the sound-hard obstacle.Another particular feature of the method is that it can reproduce the shape of an unknown hard target efficiently from the knowledge of only one Fourier coefficient of the far-field pattern. Moreover,a two-step adaptive iteration algorithm was presented to implement numerically the nonlinear optimization scheme.Numerical experiments for several two-dimensional sound-hard scatterers having a variety of shapes provide an independent verification of the effectiveness and practicality of the inversion scheme. 展开更多

In this paper,a model is established with application of the spectral-wave guide method, which has higher accuracy and can serve as a rapid calculation tool for sound transmission calculations.Based on this calculation model, some numerical results of circumferentially non-uniform lined annular/circular ducts are carried out,and some physical mechanisms can be discovered. The numerical results show that periodical impedance distributions along the circumferential direction will lead to discontinuous scattered modes with regular spacing;and mirror-symmetric structure liner will converge the energy of opposite modes.Relying on this mechanism, the potential of acoustic scattering can be further developed by suppressing lower or enhancing higher order modes with expressly designed segmented liner configurations. In particular, the intrinsic mechanism of mode redistribution brought about by the non-uniform liner can be subtly utilized to attenuate broadband noise. The present work indeed shows that circumferentially non-uniform liner is conducive to the reduction of the practical broadband sound source.Furthermore, the effects of nonuniform flow are considered in the model, then distinction of noise attenuation and scattered modes energy in different flows is shown.A possible mechanism is proposed that refraction effects in complex flows lead to the distinction. These works show that the current model has profound potential and availability for the research and designs of circumferentially non-uniform liner. 展开更多

This work was done in Summer of 1988, 1989 and 1992, at three different stations (34, 39 and 44 m under sea level), in the south Yellow Sea using narrow band acoustic pulses with center frequencies of 120, 160 and 200 kHz.The pulses were echoed back from three different depths. We used CTD to record the temperature and salinity of different depth day and night, and the plankton samples at different layers were hauled up for comparison. We applied the numerical method introduced by R. Kind to calculate reflected plane wave spectrum, measured temperature and salinity in vertical direction of non-uniform layer distribution and obtained the numerical simulation signals of backward scattering sound waves from thermocline layers. We then compared them with the experimental data. Through the experiments of the same periords of three years we have confimed that the measured time that layer-scattering-waves to reach our recorders agreed well with that obtained by temperature sectional simulated data. On the other hand, there is no apparent effects of plankton distribution. This indicates that acoustic scattering mainly depends on physical non-uniformity property of the media (sea water). 展开更多

A new wavelet approach is presented for solving two-dimensional and axisymmetric acoustic problems. It is different from the previous methods in which Galerkin formulation or wavelet matrix transform approach is used. The boundary quantities are expended in terms of a basis of the periodic, orthogonal wavelets on the interval. Using wavelet transform leads a highly sparse matrix system. It can avoid an additional integration in Galerkin formulation, which may be very computationally expensive. The techniques of the singular integrals in two-dimensional and axisymmetric wavelet formulation are proposed. The new method can solve the boundary value problems with Dirichlet, Neumann and mixed conditions and treat axisymmetric bodies with arbitrary boundary conditions. It can be suitable for the solution at large wave numbers. A series of numerical examples are given. The comparisons of the results from new approach with those from boundary element method and analytical solutions demonstrate that the new techique has a fast convergence and high accuracy. 展开更多

Under the assumption of weak scattering , the acoustical diffraction tomographic imaging of an object can be reconstructed by using the Born (or Rytov) approximation method . When the weak scattering assumption within the medium is not satisfied the multiple ultrasound scattering must be taken into account . In this case , the reconstruction results under the first-order Born approximation will be seriously distorted . In this paper we introduce an ' intermediate object function' into the wave equation and take iterative modification in space domain and spatial frequancy domain based on Born approximation . In this way , the distorted image will be improved step by step . In order to examine the method as mentioned above , we have just tried to make computerized simulations . The initial result shows that the quality of the image reconstructed from the object under non-weak scattering may be improved significantly . 展开更多
