Mutual fund investment continues to play a very important role in the world financial markets especially in developing economies where the capital market is not very matured and tolerant of small scale investors. The total mutual fund asset globally as at the end of 2016 was in excess of$40.4 trillion.Despite its success there are uncertainties as to whether mutual funds in Ghana obtain optimal performance relative to their counterparts in United States,Luxembourg,Ireland,France,Australia,United Kingdom,Japan,China and Brazil. We contribute to the extant literature on mutual fund performance evaluation using a collection of more sophisticated econometric models. We selected six continuous historical years that is 2010-2011,2012-2013 and 2014-2015 to construct a mutual fund performance evaluation model utilizing the fast adaptive neural network classifier(FANNC),and to compare our results with those from an enhanced resilient back propagation neural networks(ERBPNN)model. Our FANNC model outperformed the existing models in terms of processing time and error rate. This makes it ideal for financial application that involves large volume of data and routine updates. 展开更多

This paper studies the problem of adaptive neural networks control(ANNC) for uncertain parabolic distributed parameter systems(DPSs) with nonlinear periodic time-varying parameter(NPTVP). Firstly, the uncertain nonlinear dynamic and unknown periodic TVP are represented by using neural networks(NNs) and Fourier series expansion(FSE), respectively. Secondly, based on the ANNC and reparameterization approaches, two control algorithms are designed to make the uncertain parabolic DPSs with NPTVP asymptotically stable. The sufficient conditions of the asymptotically stable for the resulting closed-loop systems are also derived. Finally, a simulation is carried out to verify the effectiveness of the two control algorithms designed in this work. 展开更多

Thermoacoustic instability phenomena often encounter in gas turbine combustors, especially for the premixed combustor design, with many possible detrimental results. As a classical experiment, the Rijke tube is the simplest and the most effective illustration to study the thermoacoustic instability. This paper investigates the active control approach of the thermoacoustic instability in a horizontal Rijke tube. What’s more, the radial basis function(RBF)neural network is adopted to estimate the complex unknown continuous nonlinear heat release rate in the Rijke tube. Then, based on the proposed second-order fully actuated system model, the authors present an adaptive neural network controller to guarantee the flow velocity fluctuation and pressure fluctuation to converge to a small region of the origin. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the feasibility of the design method. 展开更多

In this paper a canonical neural network with adaptively changing synaptic weights and activation function parameters is presented to solve general nonlinear programming problems. The basic part of the model is a sub-network used to find a solution of quadratic programming problems with simple upper and lower bounds. By sequentially activating the sub-network under the control of an external computer or a special analog or digital processor that adjusts the weights and parameters, one then solves general nonlinear programming problems. Convergence proof and numerical results are given. 展开更多

In this paper, a new fuzzy-neural adaptive control approach is developed for a class of single-input and single-output (SISO) nonlinear systems with unmeasured states. Using fuzzy neural networks to approximate the unknown nonlinear functions, a fuzzy- neural adaptive observer is introduced for state estimation as well as system identification. Under the framework of the backstepping design, fuzzy-neural adaptive output feedback control is constructed recursively. It is proven that the proposed fuzzy adaptive control approach guarantees the global boundedness property for all the signals, driving the tracking error to a small neighbordhood of the origin. In this paper, the problems of robust consensus tracking control for the second-order multi-agent system with uncertain model parameters and nonlinear disturbances are considered. An adaptive control strategy is proposed to smooth the agent’s trajectory, and the neural network is constructed to estimate the system’s unknown components. The consensus conditions are demonstrated for tracking a leader with nonlinear dynamics under an adaptive control algorithm in the absence of model uncertainties. Then, the results are extended to the system with unknown time-varying disturbances by applying the neural network estimation to compensating for the uncertain parts of the agents’models.Update laws are designed based on the Lyapunov function terms to ensure the effectiveness of robust control. Finally, the theoretical results are verified by numerical simulations, and a comparative experiment is conducted, showing that the trajectories generated by the proposed method exhibit less oscillation and converge faster. 展开更多

This paper presents an application of adaptive neural network model-based predictive control (MPC) to the air-fuel ratio of an engine simulation. A multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural network is trained using two on-line training algorithms: a back propagation algorithm and a recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm. It is used to model parameter uncertainties in the nonlinear dynamics of internal combustion (IC) engines. Based on the adaptive model, an MPC strategy for controlling air-fuel ratio is realized, and its control performance compared with that of a traditional PI controller. A reduced Hessian method, a newly developed sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method for solving nonlinear programming (NLP) problems, is implemented to speed up nonlinear optimization in the MPC. A new on-line fault detection and isolation (FDI) scheme proposed for engines using an adaptive neural network classifier is evaluated for a wide range of operational modes to check the robustness of the scheme in this paper. The neural classifier is adaptive to cope with the significant parameter uncertainty, disturbances, and environment changes. The developed scheme is capable of diagnosing faults in on-line mode and the FDI for the closed-loop system with can be directly implemented in an on-board crankshaft speed feedback is investigated by diagnosis system (hardware). The robustness of testing it for a wide range of operational modes including robustness against fixed and sinusoidal throttle angle inputs, change in load, change in an engine parameter, and all these changes occurring at the same time. The evaluations are performed using a mean value engine model (MVEM), which is a widely used benchmark model for engine control system and FDI system design. This paper focuses on the robust attitude control of a novel coaxial eight-rotor unmanned aerial vehicles(UAV) which has higher drive capability as well as greater robustness against disturbances than quad-rotor UAV. The dynamical and kinematical model for the coaxial eight-rotor UAV is developed, which has never been proposed before. A robust backstepping sliding mode controller(BSMC) with adaptive radial basis function neural network(RBFNN) is proposed to control the attitude of the eightrotor UAV in the presence of model uncertainties and external disturbances. The combinative method of backstepping control and sliding mode control has improved robustness and simplified design procedure benefiting from the advantages of both controllers. The adaptive RBFNN as the uncertainty observer can effectively estimate the lumped uncertainties without the knowledge of their bounds for the eight-rotor UAV. Additionally, the adaptive learning algorithm, which can learn the parameters of RBFNN online and compensate the approximation error, is derived using Lyapunov stability theorem. And then the uniformly ultimate stability of the eight-rotor system is proved. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the validity of the proposed robust control method adopted in the novel coaxial eight-rotor UAV in the case of model uncertainties and external disturbances. 展开更多

The existing methods for blade polishing mainly focus on robot polishing and manual grinding.Due to the difficulty in high-precision control of the polishing force, the blade surface precision is very low in robot polishing,in particular, quality of the inlet and exhaust edges can not satisfy the processing requirements.Manual grinding has low efficiency, high labor intensity and unstable processing quality, moreover, the polished surface is vulnerable to burn, and the surface precision and integrity are difficult to ensure. In order to further improve the profile accuracy and surface quality,a pneumatic flexible polishing force-exerting mechanism is designed and a dual-mode switching composite adaptive control(DSCAC) strategy is proposed, which combines Bang-Bang control and model reference adaptive control based on fuzzy neural network(MRACFNN) together.By the mode decision-making mechanism,Bang-Bang control is used to track the control command signal quickly when the actual polishing force is far away from the target value, and MRACFNN is utilized in smaller error ranges to improve the system robustness and control precision.Based on the mathematical model of the force-exerting mechanism, simulation analysis is implemented on DSCAC.Simulation results show that the output polishing force can better track the given signal. Finally, the blade polishing experiments are carried out on the designed polishing equipment.Experimental results show that DSCAC can effectively mitigate the influence of gas compressibility, valve dead-time effect, valve nonlinear flow, cylinder friction, measurement noise and other interference on the control precision of polishing force, which has high control precision, strong robustness, strong anti-interference ability and other advantages compared with MRACFNN.The proposed research achieves high-precision control of the polishing force, effectively improves the blade machining precision and surface consistency, and significantly reduces the surface roughness. 展开更多

The striping pattern nonuniformity of the infrared line scanner (IRLS) severely limits the system performance. An adaptive nonuniformity correction (NUC) algorithm for IRLS using neural network is proposed. It uses a one-dimensional median filter to generate ideal output of network and can complete NUC by a single frame with a high correction level. Applications to both simulated and real infrared images show that the algorithm can obtain a satisfactory result with low complexity, no need of scene diversity or global motion between consecutive frames. Terminal iterative learning control(TILC) is developed to reduce the error between system output and a fixed desired point at the terminal end of operation interval over iterations under strictly identical initial conditions. In this work, the initial states are not required to be identical further but can be varying from iteration to iteration. In addition, the desired terminal point is not fixed any more but is allowed to change run-to-run. Consequently, a new adaptive TILC is proposed with a neural network initial state learning mechanism to achieve the learning objective over iterations. The neural network is used to approximate the effect of iteration-varying initial states on the terminal output and the neural network weights are identified iteratively along the iteration axis.A dead-zone scheme is developed such that both learning and adaptation are performed only if the terminal tracking error is outside a designated error bound. It is shown that the proposed approach is able to track run-varying terminal desired points fast with a specified tracking accuracy beyond the initial state variance. 展开更多

The objective of this study is to construct a multi-department symptom-based automatic diagnosis model. However,it is dificult to establish a model to classify plenty of diseases and collect thousands of disease-symptom datasets simultaneously.Inspired by the thought of"knowledge graph is model",this study proposes to build an experience-infused knowledge model by continuously learning the experiential knowledge from data, and incrementally injecting it into the knowledge graph. Therefore, incremental learning and injection are used to solve the data collection problem, and the knowledge graph is modeled and containerized to solve the large-scale multi-classification problems.First,an entity linking method is designed and a heterogeneous knowledge graph is constructed by graph fusion. Then,an adaptive neural network model is constructed for each dataset, and the data is used for statistical initialization and model training. Finally, the weights and biases of the learned neural network model are updated to the knowledge graph. It is worth noting that for the incremental process,we consider both the data and class increments. We evaluate the diagnostic effectiveness of the model on the current dataset and the anti-forgetting ability on the historical dataset after class increment on three public datasets.Compared with the classical model, the proposed model improves the diagnostic accuracy of the three datasets by 5%,2%,and 15%on average, respectively.Meanwhile, the model under incremental learning has a better ability to resist forgetting. 展开更多
