An analytic investigation of the heat transfer inside an adsorption chiller with various bed silica gel-water pairs is presented. A comprehensive model has been designed to accurately predict the correlation between the overall performance of the proposed chiller system and the functional and structural condition of the building. This model takes into account various factors such as temperature, humidity, and air quality to provide a detailed analysis of the system’s efficiency. At least 20 collectors consisting of a 34.4 m area (each) with a full-cycle time of 480 seconds are essential to improper run conditions. It is necessary to adjust the optimum cycle time for optimal performance. During the investigation, the base condition shows that the cooling capacity is 14 kw, 0.6 COPcycle, and 0.35 COPsolar at noon. Also, conduct a thorough investigation into the chiller’s performance under varying cooling water supply temperatures and various chilled water flow rates.展开更多

Solid matrix is the principal pillar supporting the successful application of EBA. A novel spherical cellulose-titanium dioxide composite matrix was prepared through the method of water-in-oil suspension thermal regeneration. Its typical physical properties were wet density 1.18g.cm-3, diameters in the range of 100-300um, porosity 85.5%, and water content 72.3%. Expansion characteristics and liquid mixing performance of the matrix in expanded bed were investigated using water and 10% (by mass) glycerol solution as mobile phases. The results indicate that the custom-assembled matrix has a stable flow hydrodynamics and exhibits the same degree of liquid-phase mixing or column efficiency as the commercially available Streamline adsorbent.展开更多

The homogeneous surface diffusion model(HSDM) based on external mass transfer and intraparticle surface diffusion was used to describe the adsorption kinetics for PNP in stirred batch adsorber at various initial concentrations and activated carbon dosages. The fixed bed model considering both external and internal mass transfer resistances as well as axial dispersion with non-linear isotherm was utilized to predict the fixed bed breakthrough curves for PNP adsorption under the conditions of different flow rates and inlet concentrations. The equilibrium parameters and surface diffusivity(Ds) were obtained from separate experiments in batch adsorber. The obtained value of Ds is 4.187×1012 m2/s. The external film mass transfer coefficient(kf) and axial dispersion coefficient(DL) were estimated by the correlations of Goeuret and Wike-Chang. The Biot number determined by HSDM indicated that the adsorption rate of PNP onto activated carbon in stirred batch was controlled by intraparticle diffusion and film mass transfer. A sensitivity analysis was carried out and showed that the fixed bed model calculations were sensitive to Ds and kf, but insensitive to DL. The sensitivity analysis and Biot number both confirm that intraparticle diffusion and film mass transfer are the controlling mass transfer mechanism in fixed bed adsorption system.展开更多

First, a bituminous coal model was built through molecular dynamic(MD) simulations, and it was confirmed to be reasonable by comparing the simulated results with the experimental data. Grand Canonical Monte Carlo(GCMC)simulations were then carried out to investigate the single and binary component adsorption of CO_2 and CH_4with the built bituminous coal model. For the single component adsorption, the isosteric heat of CO_2 adsorption is greater than that of CH_4 adsorption. CO_2 also exhibits stronger electrostatic interactions with the heteroatom groups in the bituminous coal model compared with CH_4, which can account for the larger adsorption capacity of CO_2 in the bituminous coal model. In the case of binary adsorption of CO_2 and CH_4mixtures, CO_2 exhibits the preferential adsorption compared with CH_4 under the studied conditions. The adsorption selectivity of CO_2 exhibited obvious change with increasing pressure. At lower pressure, the adsorption selectivity of CO_2 shows a rapid decrease with increasing the temperature, whereas it becomes insensitive to temperature at higher pressure. Additionally, the adsorption selectivity of CO_2 decreases gradually with the increase of the bulk CO_2 mole fraction and the depth of CO_2 injection site.展开更多

The adsorption breakthrough curves were predicted by the Thomas model, Yoon Nelson model, and Wolborska model and modified dose–response model using non-linear regression analysis. The results showed that the modified dose–response model was more suitable for the description of breakthrough curves for three adsorbents only in the first cycle. Although sheep manure waste presents the highest adsorption capacity, it is hard to regenerate and needs more time regeneration. Conversely, the internal almond shell presents lower adsorption capacity, but they are more readily regenerated.展开更多

In this study, molecular chaperone GroEL, an important protein folding helper both in vivo and in vitro, was purified by the single-step EBA technique from the unclarified homogenate of recombinant E. coli cells. Compared with packed bed adsorption, the EBA technique provided a single-step approach to yield an electrophoretic purity of GroEL. After the homogenate loading and column washing in the expanded bed mode, the GroEL protein was recovered by stepwise salt-gradient elution in packed-bed or expanded-bed modes, respectively. The expanded-bed elution mode was found as efficient as the packed-bed mode in the purification of GroEL from cell disruptate.展开更多

It can be a promising part of sustainable development concept of the global economy. Therefore, research aiming at improving their performance i.e. Coefficient of Performance(COP) by optimizing the construction of sorption beds with a built in heat exchanger system is crucial. The heat transfer characteristics between the bed of porous media(sorbent) and surface of the heat exchanger system determine the heating power of an adsorption chiller. The HP increase can be obtained by heat transfer intensification due to the increase in the thermal conductivity of the sorbent layer in the vicinity of the heat exchanger's surface. The novel modification of the sorbent layer structure is proposed in the paper in order to improve the heat transfer processes in the heat exchanger boundary layer. The analysis of desorption process conditions in the parametric model of a coated and fixed adsorption bed design is presented in the paper. The computational fluid dynamics(CFD) with conjugate heat transfer analysis is used to determine the crucial input parameters(temperature distribution in the sorbent bed) for further analytical calculations. The commercial code Ansys Fluent was used to perform numerical simulations. The developed computational model consisted of three subdomains representing heating water, heat exchanger material(copper) and sorbent(silica gel). The comparison of a novel coated design and a conventional fixed bed is discussed in the paper. The numerical analysis is based on experimental thermal conductivity measurements of the sorbent layer in different configurations, which were performed using Laser Flash Method.展开更多

In this study, the flow structure and its effect on the P distribution in the bed sediment were investigated in a 90° confluence flume. It is shown that the P adsorption amount in the sediment varies significantly in different hydrodynamic zones. The P adsorption amount is high in the flow separation zone where the horizontal velocity of the flow is very small, and it is low in the maximum velocity zone where the flow velocity reaches a maximum. The low P adsorption amount is observed in the downstream portion of the distorted shear layer, while the P enrichment is found in the upstream portion, as is related to the significant downwelling flow in this zone. Thus, the flow structure, especially, the flow velocity, has a significant effect on the distribution of the P adsorption in the bed sediment at the channel confluences.展开更多
